A $100 million loss is crazy for a recognizable franchise.

I have sources close to me who say the loss will be closer to $200 million.

Thats because most of them ignore the marketing expanses.
Marketing cost is guessing to be around 100 million as well. I dunno why everyone purposelly ignore marketing costs since it its also a big factor in the film. I guess its the soy wikipedia era effect.

I don't know any female in my group of friends that would watch a super hero movie for free, let alone pay for it.

So not surprising.
Exactly, they don't give a shit about this.

And funnily, these writers don't want women chasing men, so they write stories without deep relationships between a man and a women.

But THAT is what girls want, all the big films and shows that appeal to girls are heavy on romance.

Because it varies greatly from film to film, it's hard to make good guesses. Some films also include marketing in the reported budget, making it hard to know what is what, so people usually just talk about the budget we know.

Even if its just around guesses, marketing is a vital process of film and without it the film doesn't have presence/visibility. So its important to talk it and show it on the main discussion.
I think its more like the effect of wikipedia has on people, they show/talk less about the marketing to "soft the blow" as they say, making it less offensive.

I don't even think it has to be romance, but rather CONNECTION. Just Kara caring about her dog (if a connection has been established) and Ruthye can work, if the script puts in the time to develop the connection. For a guy oriented action film there are lots of short-cuts they can use (dude loses a hot wife/girlfriend [we know it hurts even if she has no lines 'cause she was hot] or his dog, or his car, or his kids) to give juuuuust enough emotional weight to the main character that he isn't just a straight psychopath merking folks. But for women, they need a deeper relationship, not just endless fight scenes. Obviously a hot guy with abs helps, but that can be swapped out with charisma and confidence with just a wee hint of a sensitive side as the "in" for the female character to work her magic on this otherwise bad boy.

Hollywood seems to have gaslit themselves as to what they THINK female audiences respond to, which is a woman dunking on every man around her while otherwise acting JUST LIKE a boorish dude with no accountability or acknowledgement of their failings while getting CONSTANT affirmation of her choices from some beta cuck soyboy. Basically what a man-hating post-modern feminist would say. And of course there is a reason why women like that are spinster cat ladies, no dude will touch them with a 10 foot cattle prod and most other women shun them as if they carry the plague. But Hollywood keeps listening to these harpies for script and casting advice.

So many once classic movie tropes and well developed and effective methods to pull in the audience have been deemed "problematic" so now scripts flounder, scenes go nowhere, relationships become exhausting, because the movie just can't GET TO THE POINT anymore because the film language has become muddied and confusing.

Women want to see happy and loving relationships in movies and shows. Many of these girlboss movies are like stereotypes of what people think a strong and independent women are.

Male "feminists" are just pussy crumb hoping predators.

Male "feminists" are just pussy crumb hoping predators.

I fucking adore when someone calls them a male feminist looking for crumbs, they feel the need to tell everyone how much pussy they are getting, how they have a hot wife/girlfriend/etc., how much sex they have, how that woman worships the ground they walk on.

Immeidately they are "objectifying" the women that should be the closest person in the world to them.

Like.... what a wild bank to the chud side of the force the moment you call them out.

Priceless.

So the feminist shit was just a ruse to get in? Or is this the ruse to prove they aren't a snake?

James Gunn is a hack that got lucky with Guardians of the Galaxy. People evolve. Nobody likes Reddit Tier humor anymore. The fact that Batman v Superman made almost 200 million more than Gunn's Superman is absolutely hilarious. Only reason why I am remotely interested in seeing Supergirl is because of Lobo.

We managed to catch a matinee showing on a whim at my local 105-year old theater. Haven't been in like a decade because the last time I went it was literally falling apart lol. They renovated over the years but the mixing of the music was off, unfortunately. Still have my IMAX tickets for this weekend though so not a big deal.

As for the movie itself... it leaves out SO MUCH from the comic that I'm reluctant to even acknowledge it as an adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow. Very disappointing in that regard, but I guess that's why they removed the subtitle from the movie and just called it Supergirl. If they wanted to make a full-fledged Woman of Tomorrow adaptation, an HBO miniseries would have been a much better fit.

Having said that, if I'm judging the movie on its own merits, I'm going to have to agree with the 60% of reviewers that reviewed it positively.

- not a proper Woman of Tomorrow adaptation
- one action scene tries and fails spectacularly to emulate Gunn's style (i.e. Mr. Terrific and Yondu fight scenes)
- the color palette is way too muted compared to the comic. What the hell were they thinking?

+ FUCKING LOBO. Need a R-rated Lobo movie greenlit STAT. Jason was born for this role.
+ Milly is an awesome Supergirl. People who were freaking out about "drunk Supergirl" have no understanding of the concept of a character arc
+ The Argo City sequence is masterfully done
+ The Krypto poisoning is handled better in the movie. In the comic it ends up being a red herring, which was a lame copout IMO

+- The ending is different from the comic but I'd still call it divisive. Personally I preferred the comic's ending, but the comic's ending takes place 100 years later so they couldn't do that with the movie.

So yeah, could it have been better? Absolutely... but it's leaps and bounds above Batman v Superman (again, comparing the second movies in their respective franchises), and that's a win in my book.
Just watched last night and have no knowledge of the comic. Not sure if I just went in with very low expectations, but I really enjoyed the movie. For people to say that this is at the level of The Marvels or Madam Web are insane. The aliens/CGI was really well done compared to stuff I've seen lately. Also thought Kara had a pretty cool arc by the end. I thought this was much better than the last Thor and Antman movies.

It's pretty cool that we now know Jason Mamoa's GAF account. Welcome! :messenger_beaming:

Male feminists are not even doing well with women. We live in a world where Chris Brown sells out shows and 75% of the audience us women. The men who get women and manage to keep them are not male feminists who carry themselves like they are apologizing for beinf born.

And we're seeing a drop of over 90% in the UK and China for example. It's not simply a lack of interest, I truly believe it's a complete rejection of Gunn's universe.

I think they said in China for every section theres like 2~3 people watching. That was absolute brutal lol

As I voted about a month ago, I will wait next week for it to show up on streaming services. The only minor interest I had in this was seeing Momoa as LOBO. And even then, it is going to be a five minute cameo at best.

This will be the shortest HISHE ever.
"Oh no Krypto, you got poisoned! Let's get you to a yellow sun... all healed up, buddy. Bye, bitches!"

Halfway thru the Supergirl of Tomorrow comic. Will post a full review after I'm done.

I assume the Supergirl in the movie just making jokes and witty lines cause of course it has to.

the comic is told from Ruth's PoV and Supergirl is like 100% stoic and serious with moments of silent trauma staring into the distance as Ruth observes her. What's annoying is Supergirl curses a lot but it's so distracting cause they censor it with &!@)&&/ and it's kind been so long since I seen that in text. But an interesting intergalactic planet hopping introspective.
We get many faces of Supergirl cause of the different planets. Where she's super OP as usual. Regular-ish and planets where she's severely weakened and vulnerable so that's some good exploration.

I assume none of the nuances were captured in the movie

I think I'd like to see WB move on from the Gunnverse. I liked the casting of his Superman movie and I thought the movie had some good scenes but I think the movie was overall pretty average. With Supergirl performing worse than Morbius, Peacemaker season 2 seeming to be viewed as a disappointment and stuff like Creature Commandos not creating much interest, I'd like to see Man of Tomorrow be re-framed as closing out a Superfamily series of movies and a project that sun-sets the Gunn DC movieverse. When you keep pushing forward with something that isn't working, I think you devalue the IP (the DC properties) and add to the perception of superhero movies being slop that people aren't showing up for anymore.

I'd like a Superman film that captures the essence of Superman. A goofy, funny, and charming Clark Kent, but a confident, witty, and secure Superman. I still maintain that the best depiction of Superman was The Animated Series. The best live action Superman will always be Christopher Reeve. Superman II is the penultimate Superman film. This comes from a guy that adores Henry Cavill and The Man of Steel.

It would need a confident superhero movie to begin with.

I just watched The Flash. It was awesome! It was great seeing Michael Keaton as Batman again and Sasha Calle stole the show as Supergirl. The fact that we aren't seeing Calle as Supergirl again is a crime against cinema.

I liked this movie when it came out and got shit on for it.... All it took was time and people have 180d... lmfao.

I had never seen it before, so this was my first experience. To be honest, I really liked the Snyderverse, even if I didn't care much for Man of Steel. I might have to revisit it though.

I just caught a matinee and I thought it was ok. It didn't preach progressive social mores. It didn't try to make me feel bad. The hero wasn't a Mary Sue. Not the best movie I've seen but ok enough.

The bad guy was a bit of a weenie, but it is a superhero movie so some cheese is expected.

Behind the 'Supergirl' Bomb: Competing Cuts, Creative Differences (Exclusive)

Gunn and Gillespie had creative differences over the direction of the movie, numerous sources tell The Hollywood Reporter, and the film never found its footing in the post-production process. The test scores, which are counted on a scale out of 100 points, never escaped the 60s, according to multiple insiders. Another insider said the movie's top score was 70.

Filming wrapped in May 2025, and as early as the fall of that year, the studio and Gillespie knew the movie wasn't working. After a December test screening proved to be just okay, the studio decided to take matters into its own hands and took charge of the post-production to make its own cut. Gunn also enlisted writer Jeremy Slater, who previously wrote an unmade feature based on DC superhero team The Authority, to help with the post-production process.

The extent of Slater's involvement is unclear, although it seems he helped write scenes for a nine-day shoot of additional photography. Original screenwriter Ana Nogueira remained involved in the post-production process as well. One issue at play was the climactic fight, which was reconfigured.

The movie had a least four test screenings, according to sources, with screenings held in December 2025 as well as February and March of this year. And while social media users and critics are dunking on the movie's use of a cover of the Jimmy Eat World song "The Middle," the big needle drop in the final set piece at the February screening was a cover version of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." That song choice came from Gunn, but it ultimately was abandoned for the Jimmy Eat World cover, also a Gunn choice.

The movie employed two editors. There was Tatiana S. Riegel, Gillespie's longtime post partner who edited his Lars and the Real Girl, I, Tonya, and Cruella. And there was Fred Raskin, Gunn's longtime cutter who worked on all the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and Gunn's DC series Peacemaker. (Raskin is also Quentin Tarantino's go-to editor.) He was brought on later in the process and proved a key instrument in the studio's slowly heavying hand.

There were signs that things were getting better. Deep into winter, test scores improved and hit the low 70s. However, rather than continue to tinker away on that cut, the studio decided to force a bakeoff by creating two cuts, one by Gillespie and one by the studio.

It is unclear what major differences emerged, but one source says Gillespie's version was 11 minutes longer and featured more of the villain, Krem, played by Matthias Schoenaerts. When the two competing versions tested, the scores surprisingly dropped significantly, although the studio's inched out ahead of Gillespie's…but by only two points, according to sources. Gillespie's version scored strongly on song choices, pacing and villain. Eking out a win, even a middling one, the studio chose its cut as the one to go into theaters. A studio insider says the differences were not particularly pronounced.

The movie was never tested again. (As a point of comparison, the canceled Batgirl and the box office disappointment Shazam! Fury of the Gods tested in the in the 60s, like most of Supergirl's tests.). And from that point on, if Gillespie believed strongly that something should be in the movie, he had to advocate for it, said one source.

What we all suspected is indeed true, DC Studio (and more specifically Gunn since he is responsible for the creative side) had the final say for the cut. This is despite his assertion that each director's vision would be respected and that it was, in fact, something he wanted for DC:

No wonder this Supergirl movie looks like a second rate GoTG, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Gillespie wasn't able to make the film he wanted and that he received constant notes from Gunn.

Regarding the tweet, the last thing the movie needed was more Krem, imo.

Oh for sure, but as I said I'm now starting to think that Gillespie wasn't able to make the film he wanted, and probably received constant notes from Gunn.
