ARK: Survival Evolved sells over 2 million copies

press release

Studio Wildcard is excited to announce today that its expansive survival-adventure ARK: Survival Evolved has now sold more than two million units on Steam, with more survivors joining the Jurassic journey every day.

To celebrate this sales milestone and to offer survivors a chance to talk with the team, Studio Wildcard is hosting a Developer AMA on Reddit with @ArkJesse right now on /r/games! Watch your AMA feed for the link: #playARK.

Since its wildly popular launch in June 2015, ARK: Survival Evolved has exploded dramatically and rapidly in real estate, reach, and units sold.

Every week, at least one new dinosaur is added to expand the exotic fauna in the game.
Two weeks ago, ARK expanded significantly by adding two new biomes, snow and swamp, greatly increasing the scope and type of real estate and adding complexity to the environment and AI behavior.
And most significantly Studio Wildcard over the last two months has built out a massive competitive aspect to the game and is in the third phase of its Survival of the Fittest competition, “The Last Stand,” featuring more than 230 players and $60,000 in prizes, throwing the survival-adventure title into the competitive e-sports field with a whole new twist.

The most popular open-world Early Access game on Steam, ARK: Survival Evolved brings a new level of depth to the survival genre with a unique blend of emergent multiplayer cooperation and competition. Players awake naked and starving on the beach of a mysterious island among a herd of other confused humans and must explore the vast island of ARK to survive. What is the secret to survival?

Developed by Studio Wildcard, in conjunction with Instinct Games, ARK: Survival Evolved will launch in June 2016 on Xbox One via the ID@Xbox program, PlayStation®4 with Project Morpheus support, and full release on Steam. The game is currently in Steam’s Early Access program and includes Oculus Rift VR support and an integration of Steam community features such as Steam Economy and Steam Workshop for custom maps and mods. Players can host private/LAN servers and have access to a custom-built version of the Unreal Engine 4 Editor for creating mods. The world of ARK is designed to be modder-friendly and ever-expanding!

So, does this look like the trailer footages now? Because whenever I saw a footage it sure as hell didn't, not to mention the constant complaining about how badly it runs.

They better get to optimizing that shit coz even beefy pc's struggle to keep up fps , how the hell is it supposed to do 120 on ps4

Is it any good though? I've got just enough in my steam wallet to buy it on the current sale but I thought DayZ and Rust were ass. If it's less running around doing nothing and more action/fucking shit up I may just pull the trigger. Never really hear anyone talk about it though.

But I just watched Jurassic Park and was thinking how much I want to play a dinosaur game. What a great film.

edit: first three posts talking about how bad it runs, not looking good lol

Don't, atleast for now. Or well, do it, try it and refund it if you don't like it (which you probably won't).

I couldn't get 30fps on high settings reliably using a 970 + i5 4670k during the free weekend

Why don't they join the early access programs on XB1 and PS4.

The game is a mess technically on PC right now. They have to get that sorted out first.

I always hear unoptimized complaints from the users, but it's still selling like crazy.
How come?

open world crafting early access survival game with dinosaurs dragons monsters on an island

Couldn't they just put a small bit of it up. The only one I've tried so far is the Long Dark and that only had one area.

that would require diverting resources away from the PC version, which isn't going to happen for a while

Yikes, I'll just wait for a much steeper discount I guess. Maybe it'll run better by then. Thanks dudes.

Because a games performance isn't everything despite what many people here will tell you.

*shock*

And this is on the PC so you can turn a few options down or decrease the resolution in order to get the framerate you desire so you are by no means forced into attempting to run this thing maxed out.

ARK is a really fun game that is getting updates every day.
Like,I swear, literally every day.

You always feel like the devs are actually working on it and the game has this weird mix of being serious in it's mechanics but also totally hilarious and off the wall in some presentation and smaller mechanics.

I mean, you can literally press a button to poop which produces a big ball of poop you can pick up and throw at someone.

Their pre EA launch hype was pretty good.
They showed an awesome trailer. It was heralded as the next big multiplayer survival game within gaming communities.
They knew how to utilize Twitch as well, which is an amazing marketing tool nowadays. They gave early keys to popular streamers like Lirik and have already held a big Twitch tournament.

I kept off from buying it due the performance issues, but it's been on my wishlist. Not sure if I'm still going to buy in the future. I think this may be a game that I enjoy watching more than actually playing, like H1Z1.

it's pretty much your run of the mill survivor game. if you dig DayZ and the like you'll like it, if not then you won't

never had any problems running it though. guess i'm in the minority

Wow, that's one of the most significant underestimations I've seen on SteamSpy.

Prison Architect had something like that too. It was at 1.25 million (before 1.0) and i'm pretty sure the numbers were lower than that on SteamSpy.

My data is usually three days late.

But yeah, there are some problems with Steam WebAPI that are affecting my precision currently.

Oh. That explains it.

UE4 needs to get much more performant regarding open world rendering. This game runs rather poorly unfortunately.

No worries. We still love you.

Ahh another successful Early Access multiplayer survival game.

The real contest is which game will leave early access first. All the major players in the genre are no where close to being a finished game as far as I know. I'll be surprised if any of them are released by this time next year.

I've noticed that a lot of games (well, among those I look at) have seen a
recent significant (larger than the usual fluctuations) decrease in ownership numbers. I wasn't sure if that's an intentional correction or indicative of an issue.

Yes, this is an issue. I'm not sure what's causing it, so I'm investigating.

BTW, sales != owners. People sometimes buy games during sales to store them in gift inventory, so they can sell them later on G2A or somewhere similar.

But of course I don't think it could explain 150K copies difference. That's definitely a bug.

I was actually going to make a thread asking about this game. It's routinely at the top of the Steam best sellers list yet I've never seen a single person mention it on GAF or anywhere else for that matter. Seems like the kind of thing that's big on YouTube or something. Is it even any good?

Last time I tried it I still had to turn down most of the settings to get what I consider to be a playable framerate (60). And that is on an overclocked 970 and i7 4770K@4.3GHz.

The people with lesser hardware who can deal with that shitty performance should be happy. I can't and it sucks because I enjoyed playing it for a while even with everything turned down to the lowest and still only get 40fps in some areas..

Still waiting for that DX12 update to see if it helps anything.

This has been my main game for a while now. It's really addicting at first and eventually gets really deep.

I can't imagine this game on consoles. The multiplayer heavily relies on servers and people build their bases incredibly big sometimes to the point where it lags up a lot of computers.

I'm happy the game has sold so well, I've had quite a time with it. I have 160 hours so far and all for an early access game. The game is always getting updated too. If your computer is having trouble running it, there is a little guide on steam on how to get better FPS. I wouldn't try playing without that,

Devs take note. These open world simulator games are guaranteed million sellers. That doesn't mean that you can release another zombie game and expect to make bank though. Explore new avenues like these guys did with dinosaurs.

Do you want to know one unexplored open world simulator that will make you millions? Animals. Please, for the love of god, someone make an animal simulator.

Here is a thread where I outlined how to make it possible. Take whatever ideas you want from it. I don't want money, I want an animal simulator. Get to it.
