HOLY SHIT!! A Sequel!!! Thank god they got rid of the ugly 3D overworld.
Sold!

Looks like theyr'e rehashing some of the enemies sprites though. Oh well, still looks fantastic.

Also looks like battle will be active-turn based this time.

So what's the word on the first game? Is it going to be worth playing?
don't think NIS has sent out playables to any press yet. there have been threads on the import, i think, and from what i remember it sounded solid.

honestly the art is too fruity for my tastes but it's just novel to be playing a high res 2D RPG. plus i've always been curious about this series and the alchemical gameplay. sign me up.

I really liked it. It's nothing spectacular, but very enjoyable nevertheless.

Beside the good music and and very nice 2D artworks, the next best thing is the alchemy that ferricide mentioned.

Probably spent more time collecting, cooking, baking, combining and creating items than playing the actual game. There's just so many things to tinker with. And supposedly they toned down that aspect of the franchise in this game.

Not that the actual game is bad. The story and characters are generic as they come. But given its presentation, still very likable. I usually hate games that force you to travel thru the same place over and over again(like Suikoden III). But since the areas in this game are quite small and filled with items to collect for alchemy, the process wasn't as painful. I really like how you can use special power to solve (very simple) puzzles like how they did in Golden Sun or Wild Arms.

The battles are completely old school turn-based, and you can switch party member in and out like FFX. Some of the battles were actually quite challenging.

Nothing innovative but highly addictive:)

A chibirific JRPG...that doesn't look horrid? (Iris 2, not Iris 1, mind you...shit looks like a 1995 PC game) I might actually be interested in this

while I like the Atelier series, this game is like a black sheep in the series. First, the art looks like crap, second, you control a GUY. WTF is that! The Atelier series has always been about controlling a cute girl alchemist. In this series, some boy is in charge who happens to have a female friend named Iris. lame.

Interesting, thanks for letting me know.

I'll keep an eye out on this, now.
That's the first game he's talking about -- I imagine a localization for the sequel will be contingent upon sales of the first one.

Incredible... let's hope this one comes our way too!

There's been more 2D games than I've expected there to be, this generation. So let's hope the tradition continues! :D

At this point, I'll take whatever I can get. I'm curious about the franchise. Hell, I even have many of their OSTs.

whats the battle system?

Turn based, highest agility attacks first. You party fights on this 3X3 inivisible grid (as will the enemies, on a separate grid). The characters stands in a vertical line and can move horizontally across the grid. Standing away from the enemies will receive less damage, but lowers your attack power, and vice versa. Enemies have attacks that pushes your characters back, you can either attack with the lowered strength or waste a turn to move back.

Attacks can only target one enemy(or heal one character). Some of them have a range that damage everyone near the target.

3 characters particiate in a fight.
You can switch these charactesr with those in reserver at will, so slower characters can attack first if you switch him/her in on a fast character's turn.

Each character have the usual attack, special skills, items, blah blah and blah choices.

The main character, as an alchemist, can use special alchemy items during battle(max 9 can be created and stocked). Or, he can create them on the fly during battle. Creating these consumes mana and the energy of the spirits. So, you have to feed the spirit constantly and always replenish your mana. Quite an easy task actually.

IIRC, other than consuming food/item, the only way to heal is by using the alchemy items. And it's the only way to heal multiple characters, if they're standing in the right position on the grid.

Triumph awards you exp. On level up, you also earn ability points that can be used to learn(or level up) new skills.

You can bind with the spirit to increase attributes, and they also increase the speed you level up skills. Late in the game, you can even combine 2 spirits to create a better one(reversible).

Sweet. Hopefully the music composers of the first will do the music for the 2nd. AIEM 1 has one of the best soundtracks ever made, up there with Chrono Cross. It's absolutely amazing. I'll definitely be buying AIEM when it comes out in the US, and hopefully this sequel will make its way over here as well.

Some of the best graphics I've seen in an RPG since Legend of Mana and Saga Frontier 2. I might buy this game just to support 2d.
