The president of Local 113, the Amalgamated Transit Union, said today it would go on strike Monday morning.
Bob Kinnear, president of Amalgamated Transit Union, said the union had not been able to come to an agreement on a contract with the TTC.

He blamed government underfunding and the inability to come to agreement on the issue of contracting-out of some jobs.

“I regret that we are far apart on this issue of contracting-out. The wage offer falls short, (but) it’s not a matter of wages. We were willing to make compromises on the rate of wage increases, we were willing to be flexible on the length of agreement. The TTC has shown no flexibility.”

Earlier this morning, the atmosphere inside Sheraton Parkway in Richmond Hill where talks are talking place was guardedly optimistic.

Details of the offers are not known, but the arrival of TTC chair Howard Moscoe at the hotel gave hope that a deal was in the offing.

“We are meeting this morning to respond to their latest offer,” said Moscoe. “Hopefully we are going to bargain this through to a successful conclusion. What message can you give TTC riders? Keep your fingers crossed.”

This morning, members of both sides were scurrying between rooms. The photocopying machine was humming, but there was a hopeful mood.

Yay I got exams too. Fucking TTC is shit. Not only are they late and incompetent, they're bunch of cry babies also. Didn't they just raise the fare? They get paid a whole lot for being mean jerks and chronically late year after year. FUCK EM.

I cycle to school, so I'm fine, but I know plenty of people at York that are going to be screwed.

Actually, from what I heard at the news conference, they would only get 2 cents out of that 25 cent hike for wage increases. That could be BS though, not sure. And to be honest, I'm fine with the wage increases because it's definitely upped the number of busses on the 60 Steeles route. They can actually make the schedule now, heh.

TTC strikes me as being terribly mismanaged. If these fare raises led to improvements in service I wouldn't complain, but the TTC has been the same ol' shit for like ten years, maybe more. They added those nice (but ultimately worthless) news displays at some stations, but I'm sure half will be malfunctioning within a year. I wonder how schools will react to this?

Edit: Fuck.

University to stay open if strike halts transit
Shuttle bus from Union Station planned
April 04, 2005
by Suelan Toye (about) (email)

The university will stay open and continue to hold classes in the event of a strike by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), said a memo from senior U of T officials to the university community on Friday.

“In the event of a TTC strike, the university will be open for business as usual, students will be expected to write examinations as scheduled and employees will be expected to perform their jobs,” said the memo from Provost Vivek Goel and Professor Angela Hildyard, vice-president (human resources).

Thank God it's warm out there. I've been biking to work for the last 2 weeks (and have been whenever it's reasonable) so this has less affect on me right now. I look foward to seeing how many more cyclists they'll be on the path.

401. Rush Hour.

Great.

:lol :lol :lol Monday is going to be the biggest car crash in the history of this city. Frankly I'm looking forward to seeing what the roads look like with another half million cars on the road.

I am so glad I drive to classes. :D

Better leave an hour early, cause the roads and highways are gonna be more clogged then Harry Knowles' arteries.

Owned. I'll point and laugh at you when I walk by your car through the traffic :lol

:lol :lol :lol

I'll be walking myself...can't afford to lose any pay. Reckon it'll take me somewhere between 100 minutes and 2 hours. As long as the weather is nice and I can listen to Derringer in the morning on Q, it's all good. Of course if this keeps up more then a couple days, it'll get annoying fast.

As for the TTC, it's shit. The service is shit, the fare increase is shit, the scheduling is shit, the new buses are beyond shit. The Lawerence East buses were just pathetic yesterday afternoon...looked like the drivers had gone work to rule already. And at least one of 'em was a total cocksucker to a driver, somehow not realizing that they're the ones that are fucking everyone over.

Having said that, I'm all for the workers getting whatever they can from the dumb fucks that run this town. That's the world we live in...get whatever you can, and fuck everyone else. Don't see why they should be any different.

Damnit, just remembered that Derringer's taking the next couple weeks off. That's a damn shame...his biting commentary over the ridiculous traffic issues that will rise from this strike would be enough to get me through my slow ass commute. Might just resort to listening to my Minidsics.

FUCK THE TTC!

Thank God I'm going overseas to teach soon so I don't have to deal with these morons anymore.

I've only lived here 10 years and they've already
increased fares 3 times
had two strikes (including this one coming up)
constantly horrible bus service, sometimes 3 will go one direction and none will go the other...
terrible subway service, if you want to see how it should be done, go see some of the Asian countries..
BEST maintenance employees in the world?! The brakes on those trains are irritating...

Perhaps I'm just spoiled when I visited Hong Kong

Despite the fact that the city's population is twice the size of Toronto's...
Their subway stations are big, spacious, clean, convenient, there's no line ups at the ticket booths like we have in TO
There's always a timer letting you know when the next train is coming
There are cool ass TV ads all over the place

The trains themselves
have a computer voice announce stops in 3 different languages
the subway map on the train lights up and shows which direction you're going
i can always get a seat even during rush hour
there's more standing room
the trains are CLEAN, no litter strewn on the ground or the seats
no graffitti (sp)

For starters it's the only subway system in a major North American city that doesn't hit the airport (needless to say it isn't even close), and we've got two of the most useless lines ever built in the RT and piece of shit Shepard line with it's six passengers per ride. Just mindnumbingly bad planning and decision making.

Having said that, at least a train comes by every five minutes or less...it's the bus routes where the TTC completely sucks, particularly in the suburbs.

Kuro Madoushi said:

This is what pisses me off...even during midday hours on the Lawerence route the buses can get packed like a tin of sardines. In rush hour, forget it...if you can get a seat, it's because there's either an over excess of buses, or the one you wait for is on a route nobody else takes. And those new buses with leg room too small for a person 5'7 and over, along with next to no space to move at the back, compounds the problem by a factor of twenty. Trains in rush hour are ridiculous to ride as well.

The mentality that being crammed into moving vechiles is somehow acceptable is so fucked up it makes me ill. What's next, we gonna see this mentality applied to airliners? I'm sure that'd work well.

Stupid fucking service...I might get a bicycle for myself this summer.

I agree Shinobi

Why the HELL do I have to take another freakin bus from the bus station to get to the airport?!

Sheppard line is a goddamned joke...where does it head? Fairview Mall...my ass! Why they didn't go ahead with the planned line to York University is beyond me

I think it IS five minutes, but there are times it seems much much longer, and I've been noticing that they stop right between stations more and more often

But the bus routes are horrendous...

Especially the Pape 72 and 72A

In the mornings, if I don't wake up early enough sometimes I can miss two buses going to Pape Station and then I'll see three of them head the other direction in a 15 minute span. Additionally, there are some VERY questionable stops placed along the routes...WE DON'T NEED A FUCKING STOP PLACED HALF A FUCKING BLOCK AWAY FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!

Oh and on another note...this is hearsay but a friend's dad works for the TTC and he told me they were going to strike no matter what...

So the TTC can go to hell!

Transit Workers Union reaches tentative settlement with TTC; Monday morning strike averted

TORONTO, April 10 /CNW/ - The following statement was made by
Bob Kinnear, President/Business Agent of the Transit Workers Union - ATU
Local 113, to a media conference today at 5:45 p.m.
I want to announce to the people of Toronto that there will be full TTC
service tomorrow morning. We have reached a tentative settlement with the
Commission that our Executive Board will be recommending to our members. It is
then up to them to decide whether to accept it or not. We are a democratic
union.
Our members are entitled to be the first to see the details of the
settlement but I want to take just a few moments to explain what we
accomplished today that led to the tentative settlement.
The major breakthroughs are non-monetary in nature. There has been a
resolution to some issues that are important to our members but that will not
cost the public a cent.
One of those issues involves the scheduling of employees in the
Maintenance Department. The Commission has responded to our deep concerns
about sudden changes in work schedules that disrupt family life. The
Commission has agreed to work with us towards regularity of schedules so that
our members will be able to plan their lives from day to day.
Another important issue was schedule adherence discipline for our
Operators. Let me make it clear that we have always recognized the importance
of schedules to the traveling public. We like to be on time. But the
disciplinary practices of the Commission on this issue have been very
unreasonable. Today, we made a breakthrough that both parties can live with.
We have also made significant progress on the issue of contracting out of
our work. I want to correct the impression that some have given to the media
in recent days that this has not been a problem. It has been a very real
issue.
This year alone, we have had at least three arbitration cases on
contracting out. Today, we have agreed to some important changes to the
language of the collective agreement that will reduce the need for such
arbitration in the future. Our members do great work and there is no reason to
contract it out to people who can walk away from shoddy work after pocketing
handsome profits at public expense.
There have obviously been monetary issues as well. We've addressed the
shortfall in the pension plan, a critical issue for us.
The wage settlement we are recommending to our members, taken as a whole,
is now in line with other public sector settlements in recent months. We've
made some compromises in this area but so has the Commission.
What happens now is this: We will be having a membership meeting this
Tuesday to go over every detail of this tentative settlement. The ratification
vote is scheduled for this Thursday. If our members accept our recommendation,
we want to then turn our energies to building a better transit system for the
future.
We want to move forward with others in our community to begin to repair
the damage done to our system by years of government underfunding. We want our
customers as our allies in pressing governments to give public transit the
support it deserves. We want to work with the many community groups,
businesses and other organizations in our city that understand the importance
of public support for public transit.
We want to keep moving Toronto.

:lol I spent the entire weekend mentally preparing myself for the two hour trek to work tomorrow...guess I get the extra 90 minutes of sleep back. Not surprised they reached a deal though...even if they'd been out tomorrow, it wasn't gonna go longer then a day or two, and it sure as hell wouldn't have approached the eight day madness seen in '91.

Still, I'm kinda disappointed...I really wanted to see just how bad traffic would've looked like without the buses and subways for at least one day. Guess I'll have to wait a few more years for that case study. :lol

:lol Yeah, I was ready to go walk to the gym tomorrow and back, just to see the craziness of the traffic. Oh well, it's for the best.
