Got a letter in the mail for jury duty. Should I just do an apu and throw it out?
Stating the obvious and redundant here attend.
Not sure how different things are outside of NSW, but I would think it would be somewhat similar. If your group isn't outright dismissed beforehand or on the day, it is best to attend and see if you are picked for a jury. If you're selected, it's obvious what needs to be done; if not, they'll wipe you off the list for a number of years before your name is thrown back in the pool to be possibly be chosen again.
If you really don't want to serve this time around, the easiest way out is to say "I cannot be impartial in this case" when presented with the opportunity and you will be dismissed, no questions asked. However, if you do, your name will be available for selection in 3 months time if they don't have another selection to send you to that day.
I'll give you a tip to use in aiding your selection/dismissal. There is a misconception that if you want to be selected then it is a good idea to dress up for the occasion, to appear intelligent, respectable and so on. This is a good way to aid you in getting stricken from every jury available they do not want intelligent people on the jury, they want people who are more easily influenced and swayed.
This is from someone who served nearly 12 months on a jury and picked up these things, among others, from court officers and sheriffs. At the time I was chosen, I was sporting long hair and a beard while wearing shorts, a t-shirt and joggers my fellow jurors were shocked that I was chosen, given my appearance. The trial I served on was for a terrorism case and the crown and each defendant had 5 strikes each (where they can dismiss any possible juror without justification), but they were not allowed to ask questions in this particular instance. I laughed inside (though many did so aloud) when there was a lady in front of me wearing a hijab and, upon her number being called, stood to the chorus of 3 barristers striking her from the jury. One of them said "I'll take this one", as the strike had to come from one place. The lady promptly left with a calm "just as expected" reaction.
