Sydney, 26 April 2005 – Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCE Aust.) today
announced that its highly anticipated PlayStation® Portable handheld entertainment
system will be launched throughout Australia and New Zealand on 1st September 2005.
Following the success of the PlayStation Portable launches in Japan and the USA,
PlayStation Portable will go on sale throughout Australia and New Zealand on 1st
September 2005, available in a single version Value Pack, priced at AU $429.95 (NZ
$469.95). The PlayStation Portable Value Pack contains an added-value package of
accessories and entertainment content, including the PlayStation Portable system with
a pouch, 32MB Memory Stick Duo, Battery Pack, Headphones with Remote Control,
AC Adaptor, Wrist strap, cloth and a video/music/game sampler Universal Media
Disc™ (UMD™) including several non-interactive game demos.
A copy of Spider-Man 2, on UMD Video will be available as an extra value offer to early
purchasers of PlayStation Portable, who register their PlayStation Portable and order
their Spider-Man 2 UMD Video through www.yourpsp.com.au (www.yourpsp.co.nz),
the official SCEE web portal for PlayStation Portable.
PlayStation Portable features a 4.3-inch, 16:9 widescreen TFT LCD that displays full
colour (16.77 million colours) on a 480 x 272 pixel high-resolution screen. PlayStation
Portable also comes complete with built-in stereo speakers, exterior headphone
connector and a range of input/output connectors such as USB 2.0 and 802.11b
Wireless LAN, enabling users to connect to the Internet and play online via a Wireless
Network. Up to 16 PSP systems in the vicinity can also be connected to each other
directly in Ad Hoc Mode, allowing for Wireless head-to-head competition. In addition,
Wireless capabilities will allow software and data to be downloaded to PlayStation
Portable and saved onto a Memory Stick Duo.
PlayStation Portable uses a newly-developed proprietary storage medium named
Universal Media Disc (UMD). This high-capacity optical disc is the next-generation
compact storage media, and although only 60mm in diameter, a UMD can store up to
1.8GB of digital data – more than three times the data held on a CD-ROM. A broad
range of digital entertainment content such as high quality 3D games, music, movies,
video clips and other media can be distributed on UMD.
“PlayStation Portable will revolutionise portable entertainment, giving users the
freedom to play full 3D games, watch movies, listen to music and connect wirelessly on
their terms, wherever and whenever they wish to do so,” said David Reeves, President
of SCEE. “More than ever, today’s consumer demands access to their personal
entertainment outside the home, without compromising quality. With more than 100
PlayStation Portable game titles currently in development worldwide, and the ability to
download and listen to music, and view feature films with breathtaking screen quality,
PlayStation Portable lets users control their entertainment options, all in a single
package.”

$470!!!!!

hahahah get fucking serious Sony.
Even though everyone on this board trumpets the PSP as being awesome, it's not fucking 220 dollars more awesome than a DS, which was already awesome. UGH fuck that noise.

And fuck memory sticks and their insane pricing.

BULLSHIT

$430?? Thats $330ish US

SCREW YOU, SONY. DS is $199, good luck Sony.

Aussies shouldn't support these prices =\ I would've bought for $350ish, but man, fuck that. Roll on Xenon.

Europe got announced too

Sony Computer Entertainment has just raised the veil on the details of the European launching of the PSP. It is thus today official, the date of exit of the first portable console of Sony is scheduled for September 1 in Europe. The console will be proposed only in Been worth Pack with 249€. This pack will contain the console, 32Mb of memory Stick Duet, the battery, of the ear-phones with remote control, a cover, a dragonne, a chiffonnette and a UMD containing of the demonstrations of plays. The arrived first will be likely to set out again with a version UMD of Spider-Man 2, but it will have to be ordered on the official site of the console http://www.yourpsp.com. One still awaits the details on the line-up of launching which should not delay any more.

Importing right now is cheaper for the unit and the games then they will be locally.

I bought my DS local, but the games come in 15 bucks cheaper from canada. Something is wrong here in NZ, sounds like it in Aussie too.

Lol, that's what you think Mr 'only-my-opinion-counts-especially-if-I-swear-heaps-choice-eh-cuzzy-brew.' :D

But seriously, considering a DS to me is worthless unless my younger cousins come over, whereas a PSP is a portable everything - I'd rather pay AUS$430 for a PSP value pack over AUS$200 for a DS any day of the week.

Then you are getting straight out ripped off.

I'm not hating on the PSP, but it's pricing scheme is bollocks here and in aussie. Don't forget your memory stick with that purchase if you think it's a portable everything. I never said only my opinion counts either. Although in my opinion you were silly to buy a DS just for your when your younger cousin comes over. Maybe you just like throwing cash down the toilet. I don't and this sucks.

EDIT: Hey you edited to Maori up my quote! :D it's all good This is a terribly high price though.

At least it's not in PS2-pricing territory.

Welcome to the 3rd place! Get your PS2 for $899 now! /Australian launch

I guess if you do the price conversion, or compare it to other consoles on the market it may seem like a lot more in cost, but lets think about it - remember when Gameboy colours first came out for around $300? Or what about people buying 20GB iPods for $500?

At the end of the day, $430 isn't an obscene amount of money for such a high-tech bit of gadgetry that comes with a bunch of peripherals too.

$430 would be an obscene price for old tech like a DS or something, but having played my mates imported PSP quite a bit I'd say it's easily worth the price.

Again, just my opinion, and dont forget this is probably also relative to our incomes and ability to waste money on geek toys.:D

try 1600 bucks when it first launched in NZ after getting 1 game and an extra dual shock + HP fees, which were necessary for a 1000 dollar console. Man, I had first job-itis that day.

It makes me yearn with anticipation for the one console future!

What a load of shit! Thank gawd I imported mine. Cost me about the same price, but I would have had my unit 6 months (!) before anyone else in the country.

i've figured out the blank in the following equation :

1) Release PSP
2) ???
3) Profit

2 = "Rape traditional PAL territories"

AWESOME

The best bit about it is that we don't even click on to the import thing! This shit will actually sell AND Salaries are lower in NZ than Aussie.

Gawd this is what the gamecube launched at here. which you can currently get for 150. ITS 3 TIMES THE PRICE OF A GAMECUBE

I weep for this countries consumer awareness. They get none of my dollars now for stuff such as this.

As much as (US) people bitch about US prices/games/etc. i couldn't imagine having to be a gamer outside the US. You pay out the nose and you've got to wait forever, well unless you're into importing. God bless America!

Yeah I always found it funny how the US like to bitch about the "insane" prices their paying for games. Observe:

US PS2 RRP: US$50 = AU$65
Aus PS2 RRP: AU$100 = US$78

DCharlie - "Rape traditional PAL territories" <- You've hit the nail right on the head right there, mate.

Ha!

Sony can shove it. They make us wait nearly a year after the Japanese launch, and still charge us more. :lol Fuck off Sony, give me a call when it hits €129.99. :D

It's worth pointing out that the PAL price is only higher because the US dollar is worthless crap these days. Hardware prices in Euros have always been the same or higher than USD prices. So this pricing should not come as a surprise to anyone.

No it's not a surprise. I knew Europe would get butt-fucked by Sony over the PSP's price and they didn't disappoint me at all...

I'm off to America in a few weeks and I'll just buy one while I'm over there. The only 'problem' would be I'd have to import UMD movies. But since I have zero interest in UMD movies, I don't really care :D
