From the last thread...

Reading around, it seems like this is yet another story about a dead Japanese man reincarnated into another world?

The fascination of Japan with Nazi Germany (and Germany in general) is fairly funny too and I'd love an explanation outside of them being allies in the war.
Not in Japan, but I once did an interview with some Nazi enthusiasts in my country and they explained that it's simply because their uniform and symbol designs are aesthetically pleasing.

Surprised to see myself back on the wall! It's been a while, I think.

In vaguely anime related news, my fiance and I are going to see Shin Godzilla on October 12th. Really excited to see another Anno film in the theater. It'll also be the first live action work of his I see, since I still haven't gotten around to watching Shiki-Jitsu (which had a fairly mixed reception).

What's the difference between a tank otaku who claims to be apolitical and doesn't want to engage in any sort of discussion about the social context of military weaponry because it might make their hobby uncomfortable, and a waifu otaku who doesn't want to be a SJW because talking about the social context of sexualization and female representation in entertainment in general makes their hobby uncomfortable?

I don't think military otaku who claim to be apolitical are purists, I think they tend to be deflectors who are insecure about their hobby and feel threatened by people might have something negative to say about something they are superficially interested in. Military and history buffs who really have respect and deep interest in the subject don't shy away from the historical nature of things they might be fascinated with. You can appreciate the technical power of a weapon of war without ignoring the reality of its nature. Embracing the negative aspects of history is a good way to have a balanced understanding of something you are interested in.

My father is an antique dealer and I helped him out until I left for college, we hated militaria collectors. To a man they were more frequently interested in wasting your time with 'what ifs' than buying and those into German WW2 militaria were the worst. Of course I'm generalising here but in our experience those that were into collecting were vastly out numbered by people indulging a sort of perverse fascination with Nazism specifically rather than German arms and armour. We eventually stopped stocking that stuff because of the low sales and the type of folks who would come looking for it.

There really is no such thing as 'apolitical' and trying to ignore the context of why they were made, for whom they were made or how they were made is a strongly political stance in itself. Fetishising the likes of the Tiger, Panther or V2 without addressing their very real weaknesses all plays into neo-Nazi propaganda about the superiority of German forces being done in by the crude Soviet hordes.

Yeah I really hate this crap and I won't be touching Notzi Loli 2000 or whatever unless I read on here that it addresses what the people wearing those 'cool' uniforms actually did.

well, i'm basically conflating the terms of 'purist' and 'doesn't want to talk about the glaring problems with my hobby'

How do you feel about Girls und Panzer?

girls und panzer is so weird because it displays an near-encyclopedic knowledge of that era of warfare, often with very specific jokes about certain tanks being unreliable or whatever or Japanese tanks being utterly garbage. Hell, it even alludes to stuff like the Russia equiv school commander being moe Stalin and threatening to gulag people or send them to Siberia...

...you know, I guess the thing that it feels to me like what military otaku want is to get to talk about how awesome guns and shit are but not to have to talk about how they kill things, while I think american gun nuts seem to have a bigger lock on the right to kill things. Sorry, defend themselves.

(Not all gun nuts)

How do you feel about Girls und Panzer?

I actually really like the series but I recognise it's a car crash if you're looking for any sort of historical perspective. It helps that they've created an obviously fantastical universe where tank matches between schools are a normal part of life. and that the protagonists are the only team that are not defined by a single nationality unlike literally every other school.

On the other hand the series in question (edit:Youjo Senki) appears to offering up a Notzi nation that is simply Nazi Germany with a dash of WW1 Imperial Germany. I can't read Japanese but the visuals appear to implying that the show will be following a Notzi Loli leading a country that is Nazi Germany in all but name and presumably without touching any of the aspects that made German forces so notorious such as 'anti-partisan' sweeps and Einsatzkommandos.

So yeah if you want to pretend tanks don't have an historical context stick them in a CDCT show set on giant aircraft carriers

Yeah one of the things that endears GuP to me is that someone on it clearly knew them some tanks and was willing to shoe horn that knowledge into their CDCT show., iirc they even make a joke about the KV-2 needing near perfectly flat terrain to rotate it's main turret. Of course they had an Italian team with tankettes that lasted more than 30 seconds so not everything was about historical accuracy

Looks like Gundam Thunderbolt is getting a UHD BD release in Japan. I'm curious as to how much better it will look compared to the regular BD version. The set includes the English dub and and English subtitles, in case there's any Gundam fans here that have a 4K TV and a UHD BD player.

Finished Battery, it was ok. Kinda slow and sometimes a bit boring but a little bit different anime with a sports theme, kept me interested enough until the end. Overall bad season for sports animes when this one was the best from the three I gave a chance.

Haikyuu is going to be amazing, can't wait.

i mean shit man everyone here has played a fighting game or an fps. yo fighting is fun and tank warfare in sports form is fun as hell

Unless they drew their original art in a format with a wider color gamut than Rec. 709 (BD) or sRGB then it really shouldn't. The animation studios I've worked with tended to stick to sRGB because they were primarily TV focused and the cost of outfitting a studio for wide colour gamuts is not small (getting every artist a wide gamut capable screen, calibration, etc, etc).

Yeah I really want a Girls und Flugzeug (please excuse my Google German) with the same level of fun and detail GuP had, pretty sure Brave Witches won't scratch that itch this season

It probably was in this case. I was skeptical of the 4K nature of this, but....

http://animeanime.jp/article/2015/11/23/25803.html

It seems way back last year when they first announced it, they already stated that it's the first Gundam project which was being mastered in 4K. So they probably took HDR into account too for the production. Since the Sunrise studio making Thunderbolt is the same one which worked on Gundam Unicorn, they aren't really being held back by shitty TV standards.

While there's a lot of technical speak there that I don't fully understand, I think I understand your point. Basically, unless the title was mastered in above standard BD resolution there isn't likely to be any improvements. Pretty much like how anime mastered in SD doesn't get much of an improvement (and in some cases, looks worse) when upscaled. Am I getting this right?

I'm still very interested in seeing older anime titles restored to 4K. Belladonna looked absolutely stunning on the big screen!

Well, there we go! If it really was mastered in 4K, then it should look pretty great. I'll wait for the comparison between it and the standard BD version. I wonder just how much better it will look?

Wow that was a very forward looking decision, are they still scanning drawings? I mean the largest Cintiq is only QHD at the moment. I can't read Japanese but I'll bet the article doesn't dig into that stuff which is a shame as I'm both professionally and personally curious as to what they had to do to get there.

Sorry my bad posting from work means I forget that half of my job is garbage acronyms. One of the key changes for 4K is a wider colour gamut (ie more shades of red than in standard TV aka NTSC) this is what all the 'HDR' fuss in TVs is all about. Of course if you want to create in a broader colour gamut you can't do it on standard screens that can't display that gamut (if you're manually inking or drawing this doesn't apply).

Ensuring that 'my green is the same as your green' is a real issue in animation studios, as an example a customer recently showed the issue they were having approving a room for their character. The room was brown cardboard box but the senior person's screen showed the brown with a strong green tint that made the room look gloomy and depressing but the artist's screen had a red tint that made it look warm and welcoming. Who's screen was 'right'? If you decide to master in a very broad colour gamut this gets even more critical as the downsampling to produce a regular TV gamut will exacerbate any discrepencies.

It's October 1 in Japan now.

First wave of autumn anime will be:
Bubuki Buranki: Hoshi no Kyojin
Shuumatsu no Izetta
WWW.WORKING!!
Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku
ViVid Strike!
Uta no☆Prince-sama♪ Maji Love Legend Star
Tiger Mask W

Curious about Shuumatsu no Izetta since Wargaming is one of production commitment, i guess German tanks will keep getting nerf in this show lol.

I have absolutely nothing I want to check out other than Working (and continuing Jojo) so hopefully there'll be some pretty good impressions over the next few weeks.

It's not a technical article no, unfortunately. It was just information mentioned by the producer and director at a talk event when they were promoting the project. As far as scanning goes, yeah Sunrise definitely still does. There are some animators who work entirely digitally now, but it's still a huge hurdle for the industry at large. Really wasteful though, especially considering how there's increasingly more digital work required in the composition of entire scenes these days.

If you haven't read this before you'll have a read kick out of reading what Aya Suzuki has to say about the sad state of the Japanese animation industry in terms of not embracing digital pipelines fast enough: http://www.anigamers.com/interviews/animator-aya-suzuki-anime-industry-animenext-2015

Checking if there's any interest in having an AnimeGAF group trip to Japan next year.

We'll most likely be going sometime in week 12-13 so we can check out AnimeJapan 2017.

Going for 8-12 days. Half in Tokyo and then the rest in the Kansai (Kyoto/Osaka) region.

Estimated budget should be about $1000+flight cost if you want to only join us for the first half in Tokyo and about $2000+flight cost if you want to join in on the whole trip. This depends on what kind of accommodation we'll get.

You will need to confirm if you're going and order your own flight by late October 2016.

I will help out getting us an apartment, hostel and/or hotel for a cheap price.

Some of the things we could be checking out in Tokyo:
AnimeJapan 2017
Ghibli museum
Akihabara
Nakano Broadway
Odaiba (which has the giant Gundam statue and other stuff)
Other things you want to check out

Some of the things we could be checking out in Kansai region:
KyoAni Shop
Nipponbashi
Temples and shrines in Kyoto
Cherry blossom viewing and check out the deer in Nara
Other things you want to check out

Here's pictures from the Fall 2015 K-On GAF Japan trip we did (only the Tokyo part):

Holy hell AoT dynamic city swinging sequences were animated in 3D, printed off and then the character art was drawn on top of them? No wonder they burn through artists like they're going out of fashion, I can see why Aya Suzuki just flat refuses offers of work from studios that are still producing on paper. Thanks for the link it's both sad and fascinating at the same time, I guess everyone involved is too damn scared of both the up-front capital cost and the reduced productivity that comes from bedding down a new production process despite the huge long term gains it offers.

We’re gonna shoot marshmallows at the animators!” Stuff like that seriously happens. We’re just a bunch of kids.
