Honestly airbender was only going to work the one time. The political climate and the nature of modern writing just wont allow for good storytelling in anything done with multiple cooks in the kitchen.

Why? why does the political climate and nature of modern writing not allow for good story telling? I'm really curious why this is the case.

It was a anime inspired kids show. What am I even reading here?

They should have gotten Aaron Ehasz instead.
He did really good work on the Dragon Prince too and was the head writer on ATLA.

I'm never a fan when they just ignore the amazing team they had at the time and just take the 2 Head honcho, as if they were the only person responsible for the success.

This is narrow minded too.

pretty sure those guys are woke warriors but im not 100%. they could have been offended by something stupid and left, like "whitewashing" or "non-inclusiveness" or "micro-aggressions" or whatever bullshit... we have no idea

My friend works down the hall from their offices at Netflix and I asked him what’s up with this debacle and he’s like oh it’s going to be great they have all the original creators and are doing a big marketing push. I showed him the news and he’s like welp burn it all down.

I think Aaron Ehasz didn't want to. But still working for Netflix tho.
Man I was really looking forward to the live-action adaption of the best animated show of all time. :(
They still can manage to produce something watchable. I will wait for the first trailer

Because stories are now written to appease to various minority groups and activists on Twitter.

Traditional concepts that provide a strong foundation like the heros journey are no longer followed. Look no further than Korra vs ATLA.

Korra as a character never grew. She began the series as Uber powerful, and the story bent to her whims. Her struggles came from the idea that she was so good at everything, she didn't need to develop herself. He few struggles were presented less as character development and more like story-line filler.

Compare that to Aang, who while a master at air bending, struggled with learning the other elements. He struggled with the genocide of his people. He struggled with his maturity and sexual relationships (for a nick cartoon). There is strong traditional story telling behind all of this. They never cowered to modern sensibilities.

Who are those minority groups? Tell me more :messenger_tears_of_joy:

On the Cartoon industry it probaly doesn't have any effect. But on the live-action adaption it might. Anyway, I don't want to see any white kiddo in monk attire doing martial arts. That shit is weird.

No only heard rumors. But that is what I expect from Netflix. A caucasian actor is probably more marketable in the western world obviously.

That's what you expect...from Netflix?

If they gave me Avatar Part 3 I could do a hell of a job. Just putting that out into the ether.

So, did they leave because Netflix was too woke or not woke enough?
My understanding is that they are pretty woke.

Wonder why they left. Netflix being Netflix, my guess is they tried to woke it up. Regardless, I am no longer looking forward to it now. I don't want another Avatar interpretation. The Shyamalan Avatar was quite rubbish.

I'm kinda curious how they'll "woke" it up.

Even though it's a cartoon for kids, Avatar is one of the best examples of how to make a diverse cast of characters without it feeling forced or preachy. It was doing what woke culture is so desperate for in entertainment media today, and it was doing it before and better than most current media.

The token Netflix gay character is a given. But I wonder if they'll make the whole thing more preachy.

She could have been great all they had to do was katara 2.0 and they would have been straight (heh).
All the foundations were laid out for a great sequel. Restoring the Air benders? What happens to the fire nation? They had loads to play with.
I did enjoy how they touched on non benders getting pissed off with benders as they have power over them and start wars. But that was literally the only thing I enjoyed and it went nowhere.

I'm curious where the disagreements were. Did Netflix demand certain storylines or refuse them? I imagine Netflix requires a certain amount of casting diversity that would result in multi-ethnic tribes (versus all earthbenders being cast from one race, firebenders from another, etc) that perhaps conflicted with the creators vision of how the world evolved. Or maybe they just wanted more money and time for complex fight scenes and Netflix said no.

It seems like they could just use the script and cartoon as a storyboarrd and literally do a shot for shot remake and it would be pretty successful. Why this show seems so hard to crack into live action is a mystery to me.

I'm generally OK with what Netflix does for it's shows in terms of "wokeness". Sometimes it is annoying though.

Umbrella Academy season 2 spoiler .
I'm up to episode 8 of season 2. Vanya is all of a sudden gay in this second season for no reason at all. Hard to say whether it's Netflix or Ellen Page that wanted this to happen in this situation to be honest. It's pretty annoying though and I absolutely do not care about her story line at the moment.

As long as things make sense in this new show, it's all good. My wife and I are expecting at least 1 or 2 gay characters.

Nailed it.

Though I would love to see a hot and heavy avatar sex series with young teens (played by adults of course). It would be all that rule 34 stuff come to life!

There was a time when that would have been more acceptable, but these days teen/youth shows are amazingly Puritan.

i believe it. in fact, id be willing to bet its mostly to do with "whitewashing" and "non inclusiveness" complaint on Bryko's part. those guys sound like they have an agenda. i always felt the lebian relationship was forced in bc no one liked the direction they went with LoK, and gay rights was big in the news (gay marriage was legalized in the states like 6 months later).

netflix probably wanst willing to give into their demands so they walked. i dont have hope for this adaption, and i never did, but im going to watch it before i jump off the wagon prematurely. who knows, without all the woke shit it might be even better!

EDIT: jfc, one look at those twitter replies and youd think netflix was about to release ATLA child porn, lmao wtf is wrong with people. outrage culture is so fucking hysterical that they trip over themselves to find something offensive, wind up blowing the simplest things out of proportion and come off as absolute crazy people to the rest of the world

So Bryke wanted to cast adults in a show with a tone that is aimed at children?

It seems like these guys didn't understand what Netflix saw in them. Netflix aren't Avatar fanboys who will allow them to produce any crap they want. They thought Avatar was going to be their GoT universe. Of course they wanted to age up the characters and make it darker. Game of thrones wouldn't have worked if it was written for a nickoleodeon age bracket

It's really saddening that another good Avatar has virtually no chance of happening.

Edit: No-one being White makes sense, though it's strange being completely adamant about it. Still have some respect for them since they stuck to their principles and walked out (even though some of those principles are wack).

Heh, if they want a dark setting just make the damn Attack on Titan live action. Dark with the story that has some insane twists.
The only problem is that the budget to do it properly will make GoT look like a low budget sitcom.

I am on the fence when it comes to fantasy, but for me it would look weird if caucasian people were cast in this. But I am not one of those people who would say it would completely ruin it for me. It is just that all fantasy has some connection to reality. In Avatars case it is connected by the clothing, philosophy and martial-arts of east-asia ( in the case of Earth, Fire and Air nation at least). Similarily it would look weird if Peter Jackson would have casted black people to play the people of Rohan for example.

I doubt you'd be saying that if they said no jews allowed in the show.

Most Jews aren't Eas-Asian, so that would be unnecessary

Edit: Also, you can't convert to being White, so pretty stupid comparison.

It wasn't just politics that created Korra's downfalls. It was fanfic and crazy fan girls. The way the story ended was basically fanfic writing.

ATLA is very traditional story telling. You can't do that when you're worried about audience reaction. Korra had no consistent direction. In the first season, the Benders vs Norms seemed an interesting theme upon which to rest the story but that was thrown out and forgotten about pretty quickly. Just the idea of Aang's city and whether it lived up to his dream or not was tossed away.

In the first two episodes of ATLA you got about every major character and theme, each characters journey and all of those pieces were relevant and important through the end of the three seasons. Nothing established early on was unimportant. I rewatched the whole series a month ago and was impressed at how much they had planned out. You can't say that about Korra because it was trying to escape the wrath of two sometimes conjoined groups. I don't even remember the plot of the middle seasons in Korra. I remember the setup of the first season and the clusterfuck of the last season.

You can't have a planned out hero's journey with SJW types because they are PoMo post-colonialists that that think every traditional or unifying narrative is worthless and/or racist product of the white patriarchy.

And you can't have a planned out hero's journey with fanfic types because every character is subject to their head-cannon and their want to play dollies with them, so any path the story takes that upsets them leads to a tantrum.
