Anyone catch this on Nickelodeon tonight? Its apparently their new series and I'm surprised this is coming out of Nickelodeon, known more in recent years for fluffier cartoons. This actually had a more serious story and an adventurous spirit. I'm getting a real 80s adventure cartoon vibe from it so far.

Its got an Asian-esque theme and an obvious anime look to it, but it doesn't seem to pander in either respect (unlike, say, Xiaolin Showdown or Jake Long: American Dragon). I personally had a little problem with the animation, though it seemed the action scenes had more frames. Maybe that's their way of keeping the episodes within budget. Also the character design is a *tad* generic, but perhaps its a good thing that the characters aren't in rediculous-looking costumes and such.

Here's TV Tome's description:

"Wind. Earth. Fire. Air. Only the Avatar was the master of all four elements. Only he could stop the ruthless Fire Nation from conquering the world. But when the world needed him most, he disappeared. Until now... On the South Pole, a lone Water Tribe village struggles to survive. It's here that a young Waterbender Katara and her warrior brother Sokka rescue a strange boy named Aang from a cavernous iceberg. Not only is Aang an Airbender - a race of people no one has seen in a century - but they soon discover Aang is the long lost Avatar. Now it's up to Katara and Sokka to make sure Aang faces his destiny to save the tribe - and himself.

I'd say it certainly has some potential and its more serious, adventurous tone is likeable enough. The premiere reruns sometime tomorrow and Wed. and it will start playing regularly 8 PM Fridays.

It's so obvious that they're copying that "typical anime" style that so many other American cartoons have done. I haven't watched it, but if they over-do those stupid wild takes the way Teen Titans does, count me out.

They don't really. That's what's good about it.

And yeah, demi, it was "ok." Its certainly nothing revolutionary, but I do like the direction its taking. It seems to take itself a bit more seriously than the loads of cartoon fluff that litter the airwaves these days. Its always so hard to judge something off of one episode, though.

Any dramatic show will suffer on Nickelodeon, the kids network that shows the same episode of a show nine times a day every day for a month.

I was actually quite impressed with what I saw today, especially for a more serious Nickelodeon. The style is really good and looks like a bit older anime with a hint of Ghibli in there. Some of the animation for the action sequences was pretty damn good. I'm gonna tune into this on Friday night.

Yeah, like I said, the animation for the action scenes seems to be more fluid than in non-action things. I think they cut frames on the non-action so they could make the action look better. I like how even though they obviously have special abilities, its not an all-out DBZ-style power battle, though. Really, it may not be the best thing ever, but considering where its coming from and the station its being played on, its surprisingly strong. Only time will tell if it gets better or worse, but I'm going to keep my eye on it.

Heh, I noticed the Ghibli thing, too. It definitely has a small hint of that in there. I think its in the eyes...
