The idea to embark on such an endeavor has been floating around the Pearl Jam camp for several years. "The thing we were looking for was a really good way to manage the thing," Tim Bierman, manager of Pearl Jam's Ten Club fan organization, told Billboard.com. "That's where Basecamp came in. They developed a killer application I'm really confident the fans are going to love."

In an interesting twist, the files will be encoded without DRM (digital rights management) restrictions, allowing them to be burned to CD and transferred to portable MP3 players. Select material will also be available from such digital services as the iTunes music store.

They have a label, and technically they're still with Sony too.

I'll probably only get the Gorge show as that's the only one I wanted (read: was able) to go to. well, maybe the one that is happening Sept. 11. it might be interesting...I'll wait for fanviews to come in to decide.

Yeah, what's the deal with this? I had heard they were looking forward to their contract with Sony being up. Is that contract expired yet or are they just sort of in a holding pattern?

Oh, their contract is up. Now I'm not sure of the timing of the deals but I think what happened is that they (Pearl Jam) made their deal with BMG and then Sony bought BMG. They (Sony) could have bought BMG before that but like I said I'm not completely sure on the details.
