Backlog Appreciation Thread

Well summer's almost over and of course I hardly touched a videogame. Sure did buy a few though. WHICH IS INCREDIBLY DUMB AND I THINK I HAVE SOME SORT OF PROBLEM. But hey, I know I'm not alone. So, in no real order at all, I present:

THEBACKLOG (Games I sincerely plan to beat, someday)
GC:
Skies of Arcadia: Legends (Save right after defeating Galcian)
Resident Evil: Remake (In caves with Chris I think, but I watched someone beat Jill, that counts right?)
Viewtiful Joe (At the stupid shit shark's level in Adult, just beyond that it Kiddie)
Resident Evil 0 (Saved right after starting the game)
Lost Kingdoms II (Somewhere in the middle)
Tales of Symphonia (Saved right before the first temple)
Beyond Good & Evil (Saved right before you get in the car and go wherever it is you go)
Zelda Collection MM (Saved on 2nd day)
Zelda Collection LoZ (6th Dungeon I think)
Zelda 4 Swords (We couldn't get past like the 3rd screen)
Zelda Master Quest (In the final dungeon where you go through those 6 rooms)
Pac Man Fever (This game fucking sucks)
F-Zero GX (Ghost race in story mode on Easy, haven't beaten 1 hard. Haven't played anything but first cup in GP either)
Super Monkey Ball (Stuck on like #13 on Hard)
Soul Calibur II (Beat the world thing in normal)
Luigi's Mansion (Need to collect 50 ghosts or something)
Pikmin (At that field with the scary shit in it. The one with water and cool music)
Bomberman Generation (Beat the first world, haven't done any others)
SSX Tricky (Got to Alaska in tricks)
Rogue Leader (The mission where you bomb the downed cruiser)
Ikaruga (I suck at videogames)
Mega Man Network Transmission (But some videogames just fucking suck. Got totally raped by the first boss)
Resident Evil CVX (Haven't opened it)
Super Smash Bros Melee (Lost old save file, beaten maybe 2 or 3 characters)

XBOX:
MGS2S (Beat first boss, where you get the real gun)
Panzer Dragoon (Beat first level)
MechAssault (Beat 2nd Mission)
Jet Set Radio (Pretty far, I think I'm chasing after the pyramid gang atm)
Abe's World (Couldn't beat first level after reuniting the two)
Halo (Gave up after getting lost in level where you unleash the spore dudes)
Morrowind (I'm jumping my way to Baltimore)

GBA:
Mario & Luigi (Gotta go through this factory thing)
Castlevania TheFirstOne (Stuck at this damn two headed dragon piece of garbage)
Mario Kart (I've unlocked one track)
Lunar (I've put it in GBA once, that counts for something right?
Zelda Oracle of Ages (Got the harp)
Chu Chu Rocket (Beat all the normal puzzles)
Yoshi's Island (Got to lava world)
SMB 3 (Got to the giant world without skipping)
Advance Wars 2 (2nd Mission)

DC:
Ecko (Who knows. I think I have to fight a shark or something)
Bangai-o (Like level 13 or so)

PS1:
Vagrant Story (Gave up after it took me half an hour to kill some damn fire elemental thing because my weapon sucked and then going forward and getting raped by lizards or something)

I'm ignoring all the games that don't really have anything you can beat, such as sports games. I suppose you can beat a season or whatever, but shit.

I am at least proud that I have played a few minutes of almost every game I own. If there's any game that's especially worth playing or beating, please tell me as I'm not particularly inclined towards any of em.

Good! A backlog thread! Those make me feel i'm not alone and saves me from gamer depression! lol

I wasn't really effective with mine this summer too. But I SWEAR i'll be more carefull until the end of the year. I just have somewhat 10 new games to buy until the end of the year so i have to play ALOT and very soon! lol

PS2:

Metal Gear Solid 2 (i'm halfway)
Dark Could 2 (i'll be back at this one soon, lost my first save that was like 30 hrs...)
Primal
Megaman Anniversary Collection (only Megaman1 done and mastered)

PS1:

FF Origin
Lunar Eternal Blue (nope, didn't touch this one yet. Shamefull isn't it?)
FF Chronicles
Quake 2
Ghost In The Shell

N64:

Zelda Majora's Mask
Paper Mario (halfway through)

NES:

Kid Niki
Castlevania Dracula's Curse

GBA:

Castlevania Aria Of Sorrow (just began a game)
Metroid Zero Mission

SNES:

Ninja Gaiden Trilogy
Hagane

GC:

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour

GBA

Golden Sun -
‌ ‌ ‌Just left desert and met Hammet's wife.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong -
‌ ‌ ‌On level 6-MM.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past w/ the Four Swords -
‌ ‌ ‌Need to play Four Swords through fully with someone and get the unlockabes.

GAMECUBE

Beyond Good & Evil -
‌ ‌ ‌Not far past the slaughterhouse. Next destination is the moon. Pearl collection ahoy!

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem -
‌ ‌ ‌ Completed the game with two alignments. One more left.

F-Zero GX -
‌ ‌ ‌ Chapter 7 in story mode

Luigi's Mansion -
‌ ‌ ‌Haven't gotten the best Mansion yet.

Metroid Prime -
‌ ‌ ‌ Fighting Ridley. Seems harder in the PAL version believe it or not.

Pikmin -
‌ ‌ ‌ Always seem to play first few days and delete my save to free blocks for other games.

Resident Evil -
‌ ‌ ‌Need to complete with Chris and do master mode.

Resident Evil Zero -
‌ ‌ ‌I'm not sure how far I am. Been attacked by monkeys, saw lots of FMVs with weirdo
‌ ‌ ‌ guy, Wesker and the other bloke.

Serious Sam: Next Encounter -
‌ ‌ ‌Completed Ancient Rome, which was filled with Romans that had wheels instead of
‌ ‌ ‌legs, men without heads that somehow scream and suicide bomb you and other
‌ ‌ ‌idiotic enemies. Ancient China is next.

Skies of Arcadia Legends -
‌ ‌ ‌Not far at all. First ship battle.

Spider-Man 2 -
‌ ‌ ‌Not really enjoying the story mode, I like throwing it on just to swing about.

Super Mario Sunshine -
‌ ‌ ‌Only blue coin shines left.

Super Monkey Ball -
‌ ‌ ‌Need to unlock and complete Master mode.

Tales of Symphonia -
‌ ‌ ‌Just completed first shrine.

The Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition -
‌ ‌ ‌Need to complete Master Quest and Majora's Mask. Whenever I put either on though I
‌ ‌ ‌ just want to play Wind Waker. The original Legend of Zelda and Adventure of Link also
‌ ‌ ‌need completing.

TimeSplitters 2 -
‌ ‌ ‌There's three more levels to unlock in arcade mode, and I'm not sure how I get em.
‌ ‌ ‌There's probably characters I haven't got yet as well.

Viewtiful Joe -
‌ ‌‌Upto the shark dude in Adult. Completed in Kids. Everyone loves a hero, a hero is you.
‌ ‌ ‌or something like that.

SWEDISH PERFECTION
Hehe, I spent 6 months earlier this year only playing backlog titles, while not buying any games at all. During this summer though, the list has yet again seen somewhat of an expansion.

PS2:

Onimusha 2
Sly Cooper
Freedom Fighters
Gregory Horrow Show
Soul Calibur II (The Edge Master Mode, that is)
Kingdom Hearts
Hot Shots Golf 3 (when I feel motivated to complete all the cups)

Xbox:

Star Wars: KOTOR
Otogi: Myth of Demons

GC:

F-Zero GX (beating story mode, perhaps)

All I can think of for now.

Sure did buy a few though. WHICH IS INCREDIBLY DUMB AND I THINK I HAVE SOME SORT OF PROBLEM.

Same here. I have to stop doing this! I, also, have to stop buying games based on reviews and hype; for example - Metroid Prime ("Hmm, I've never really liked first person action shooters, but hey, it's Metroid. It's supposedly a masterpiece! But I don't like those kind of games... Naaw *buys*"), Viewtiful Joe ("Okay, so this game is HARD and HARDCORE! But I'm not hardcore. Ah well, it's a 2D action platformer! *buys*"), Devil May Cry & Resident Evil 1+CV & Silent Hill 2 ("I don't like horror/old school action games... But they're great?! Yeah! *buys*). Yes, I already know it's idiotic. >_<
Basically, I should just sell the games that I really don't like. But again, I... can't. I also collect games, after all. >:O

Some of the games listed here can't really be beaten, but oh well... I'll list them anyway.

I've realized it's stupid to buy new games just because they seem great when you still have a lot of great games to finish. Also, I've realized it can be stupid to buy good games just because they're cheap. It'll only add more weight to your backlog shoulders. Why would I need more games when I already got more than a few great games to play? I can only play one game at a time anyway.

Write a list of the games you want to complete, stick the list to your consoles or something, so that you'll always be reminded of it whenever you think about playing something. That's what I did, and it worked. It gave me that little extra push I needed to start playing backlog titles again, which I otherwise would be too lazy to do.

Adventure of Link
Full Throttle
Majora's Mask
Soul Calibur II (still have to unlock about 30% of weapons)
Shadowrun (Genesis)
The Legend of Zelda

And that's about it right now.

My list is not quite as long, but these are the games I have either not started or have not played for more than an hour, yet I still intend to play and beat all of them:

Devil May Cry
Dark Cloud 2
Final Fantasy X-2
Suikoden III
Sudeki

In just over a week, I'm also buying Viewtiful Joe for PS2. Then, of course, Fable in September. These should be more than enough single player games to last until Halo 2, but then there is my Xbox Live addiction with Crimson Skies and Amped 2 to consider, as well as the upcoming Dead or Alive Ultimate.

I need to quit my day job.

It is indeed good advice! I always have my backlog list stick right on the door of my living room TV stand. I did kill almost half of my backlog list just in 2004.

I'm lucky, but unlucky. My backlog is only 29 games big. But.. I cut out all the worthless games, and most of the remaining are long RPGs I haven't really even started. That's why I didn't want to buy TOS.

Oh wait, make that 28. I just finished Zelda: Four Swords today. Yay!

I don't have a backlog, I play all the games I buy all the way through before going on. Otherwise you are just wasting money, and also ruining your enjoyment for each game.

A game should be played through without interuption, not while trying to beat 20 others simultaneously. Do you read 20 different books to chapter 1, then go back and read each at random times? Do you watch the first 15 minutes of several different movies before finishing one all the way through? Gaming should be no different.

Certain games I play all the time, such as sports games, or racing. I don't really count those as backlog..since those are game you can just pick up and play at anytime.

I hate having backlogs, and it seems the longer I let games sit on the shelf, the more likely it is I'll never come back to them. The Circuit City firesale last month is pretty much the only reason I have a backlog at all at this point, with just a few games I need catching up on...

PS2-
Parappa the Rapper 2 - Shouldn't take but an hour to beat it, as I think I'm on leve 5
WipeOut Fusion - This game sucks. I'm content with never opening it again.

GCN-
Metal Arms - I think I'm about 40-50% of the way through it. Hopefully will take a few days at most to finish off.
Donkey Konga 1+2 - This is a party game so no need to rush to beat everything.

GBA-
Boktai - Haven't started it yet because I bought in the firesale.

PC-
Deus Ex: Invisible War - Need to d/l the patch, cuz it runs like ass on my system right now. Can't download patch because I'm on a 28.8 connection.

The easiest way to keep the backlog free is to

STAY AWAY FROM RPG's!

I think I can count the number of RPG's I've played on one hand, maybe 2.

oh man, I thought I had quite a backlog. You guys are just... o__O

I gave away both REmake and RE: Zero just to clear my conscious... so I would not have to finish them... I couldn't take it and enjoy other games after that so just tonight I ordered a new copy of each game. :( Can you guys give me an idea on how long it took you to finish each? I'm hoping REmake/Zero are in the 10 hour range and not 15-20...

As for my backlog...

PS2/PS1

Ico
Chrono Cross
Soul Calibur (for some reason I can't freaking learn it... I'm weaksauce >__< )

Gamecube

Tales of Symphonia (I'll be starting this in a few hours maybe..)
Zelda Majora's Mask reply
Mario Sunshine (played 15 minutes when first got it.. sobbed and forgot about it..)

Gameboy Advance
Zelda: link to the past

I've been trying to stop myself from buying new games if I have unfinished ones lately.. without that rule my backlog would include a good 12-15 other games. :)

Anybody here feels like you have to finish certain games because of the hype? Some times I think if I don't like playing a game, I should just quite. It's not like a book or a movie; games take a much longer time to finish and I can't afford to waste so much time. But then again if it's not horrible I think I might as well get it over with and just beat it.

PlayStation 2
Zone of the Enders 2

GameCube
Metroid Prime
Zelda Four Swords Adventures

Xbox
Prince of Persia
Riddick

GBA
Mario & Luigi

Currently playing Gaiden and Doom 3, but with the release of the holiday games, the backlog will probably only get larger.

GBA:

Advance Wars (Got near the end on my first run through, put it down for some reason, never went back. It's on loan now)
Boktai (Awesome game, and I actually have plenty of sunlight outside, but it's friggin hot. Hopefully wintertime will provide some decent days)
Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars (Played some during a recent trip. Great fun, put it down due to hiatus from gaming (see below))
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (easily my favorite of the GBA series, even though I haven't finished it yet)
F-Zero Maximum Velocity (haven't beaten all the cups yet)

Pikmin (got to 30 days and was missing ONE part when I first got this at launch; did this without a memory card, in one sitting; initially my fury overcame my love for the game and I didn't replay it; now, unfortunately, it is one of many)
Resident Evil: Code Veronica X (hasn't been played yet, recent purchase)
Star Wars: Bounty Hunter (hasn't been played yet, recent purchase)
Zelda: Collector's Edition (Zelda 1, both quests complete. Nothing else has been touched yet)

There's more pre PSone era, but not as much as you may think. Although it's growing (recently purchased Star Ocean for the SFC on eBay o_O).

Adding to the backlog is the fact that I'm on a self-imposed hiatus from gaming on the whole, in the hopes that I will focus on my own game-development project. So far it's working, but I miss my games. Unfortunately, as you can see, it hasn't stopped my purchasing habits entirely. It's merely slowed it down quite a bit.

Anything marked as a "recent purchase" was within the last 6 months (maybe 7 for some if I don't recall the purchase date correctly).

All this isn't for a lack of trying. I tend to play one game at a time, with the intention of completing it before moving on. Off hand I'm confident I could count a bit over 100 games I've completed from the PSOne era on. I'd say 75% of my current collection was purchased in the last year and a half since I split w/ my ex-fiancee. Money + time + insane addiction to gaming has created this monster.

That's 133 post-16 bit era games, for those who are curious.

Now, I sleep.

We need more gamer classifications other than hardcore and casual. I'd say collectors fit a whole other category of gamers. Those who buy any game that sounds good, play it for a short time and plop it on a pile of other games never to be touched again.

My problem is, every game I buy is with the full intention of playing it and beating it. I just have a very broad taste in games, and decent funds w/ few obligations to stop me recently.

To clarify what I already touched on in my last post, that's only about half of my actual "collection". The rest I consider beaten. o_O

I think my addiction goes beyond even "collection". Thus another reason for the cold-turkey hiatus.

I've got at least 50 games I've never even OPENED much less played. I'm not even going to bother with a list.

Sorry but most of you guys are fucking sad and wasting a shitload of money. Make that insane amounts of money. And don't tell me you picked up half of them for 10 - 20 bucks or whatever. Because its still ridiculous how many games some of you guys have bought. The people that shock me even more are people that buy a game, don't even open it, and then buy another one.... and don't open it and then buy ANOTHER one and the cycle continues.

This is my exactly the way I am. I get much more enjoyment out of a game that way too. Having said that I've only just recently got an Xbox (been a GameCube only gamer) and I really want to go back and play games like Halo, Prince of Persia, and Splinter Cell before their sequels comes out. Also I have a strong urge to play through Half Life on PC as I never did quite finish that.

I've got a mild backlog at the moment, unfortunatly i'm being forced to buy Phantom Brave before i'm ready due to the LE.

I only got some things to unlock in most of my games (minor things like Videos and such), but I don't buy a game before I finish the main story or unlock one big thing.

Why isn't this guy banned yet? Eventually he will be, judging from his tag, but why not now
