Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Editions - Game Pass Shadow Dropped - Available Now

Oh neat. Are either of these worth playing if I don't have dozens of hours to dedicate to them?

Could be a sign towards BG3 coming soon, maybe.

Larian CEO Sven Vincke Jan 2024.

You won't find our games on a subscription service even if I respect that for many developers it presents an opportunity to make their game.

Would be quite the turnaround. (spoiler, you are exhibiting signs of hopium and/or evangilism)

It also hasn't ever happened for Divinity titles.

Says Xbox on that tweet

Pretty sure these won't play well on controller. Haven't tried though.

BG2 is GOAT.
Did they edit the menus to be controller-friendly?

I kind of like it when these companies port older games to consoles because it means that they finally have to think of a controller scheme for them.

Didn't try on consoles.

Cannot imagine micromanaging 6 character party on controller though.

And then keep repeating till I get through the harder battles. (Which are quite a lot in BG2)

Seems to be fine with controller, but I've never played a Baldur's Gate game.

Edit: Ignore the vid. It's a vid for BG3

Different publishers.
Edit: Holy shit, BG2 is from 2000?
This was never on Xbox? So um what? Is this just PC?

It's on console too. It came out on PS4/XBO a while ago.

And looks like it's from 1994.
Still it's a decent game.
Watch that dirty mouth.
BG2 looked GREAT for years after its release.
Far better than most titles in the genre released years after its launch in fact.

Also, "decent"? It's one of the absolute pinnacles of the genre.

Not a fucking chance.
Larian has famously an internal policy against "devaluing their catalogue too quickly".
Their games take ages to get any significant discount and they don't release them on subscription services or bundles.

Pretty sure they did a DOS 1&2 bundle(if that's what you mean), but spot on with everthing else.

Cant hear you over the sound of all the gamers who switched to Diablo 2 that same year.
Another decent game.

Dang I got hyped and thought it was baldyrs gate 3 that stealth dropped. I was surprised that metaphor fantanzio game stealth dropped with no fanfare especially with how highly praised that game is.

Shadows of Amn is the best Baldur's Gate.

Truth.

BG3 was good, but it didn't reach the lofty heights of 2. Plus the sheer scale of the OG "trilogy" (1&2 plus ToB) that allowed you to take a party of characters from level 1 to 40 against the backdrop of a sweeping campaign with great writing and stakes.
Long live the Infinity Engine!

I wish BG1 and 2 got proper remasters because Beamdog's work was lazy and cheap overall, sprinkled with crap (the new companions). Still it allowed the games to run better on modern hardware so there's that.
But it would be awesome if the Infinity Engine games got a proper treatment one day, the original BG trilogy is still unrivaled in it's own genre, BG3 never achieved the same level of "epic D&D adventure", and while we're at it, the 2 original Fallout games would be up there for a remaster as well.

This makes me think, I wonder if the Switch versions could be updated to use the Switch 2 mouse feature, that could be a nice feature

Not a big fan of the first game, but the sequel is among the best role-playing games I've ever played. Nice get for the GP bros.

Pathfinder: WotR definitely came closest to that OG Infinity Engine "feeling."
Something that modern rpgs lack that some old ones had (on pc at least) is transferring your character or party between games. The ancient D&D gold box games had this, as did Wizardy, Baldur's Gate and others. I miss this feature terribly.

Eh, there will always be clueless suckers who make poor choices.
Look at the people who suck up Skyrim.

Also, CRPGs aren't really the type of games you "fidelize" to. They aren't GAAS bullshit.
You play through them and you are done unless you want another serving of the same. The mere idea of "switchign to somethign else" is demented when applied to the genre.

I've had them on PlayStation for years.

They play like ass on a controller.
I thought they did a decent job with controller support myself. I mean if you have enough buttons on your mouse you don't even need the Keyboard. Played Baldur's Gate one strictly with a trackball mouse. Don't understand why they did not bring controller support to the PC version. A nice option for pc or docked Steamdeck users.

Among the classics, BG never hooked me. Must be something about the tone. I loved Torment and Fallout.

"fast like chikita fast paws"

It might support KBM on Xbox. Some games do actually have that built in.

Edit: And of course the two games and the expansions are an absolutely amazing saga and one of best in all gaming. Just prepare to read a lot, this is old school title.

Imma gonna get some CRPG action if that would be the case.

Reading is preferable over VO. CRPGs should always be text/lore heavy IMO. Else it just feels half assed.

I think it got down to $50 or so on Xbox like once. I got it then a while ago.
On Steam and GoG the duology goes on fairly big sales. On consoles, not as much.
I do recommend the PC version if you have a Windows, Mac or even Linux PC as there are a ton of mods for the games. They will probably be easier to use on Windows though.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem this game has KBM on consoles :(. Which really sucks.

Found a site that lists all the KBM games on Xbox side of things:

I got 1 and 2 for extremely cheap for console so I'm likely not buying it again. I got 3 also for around $50. I haven't played any of them yet. I'm not really that big into cRPGs. I played a bit of PoE and enjoyed it but fell off about half way through. I'll consider a PC copy after trying it on console if I think there's any hope for me to even enjoy it.
