I've visited a lot of countries and I have to say that the following statement is most certainly true.

Are you in Malta right now?

I have bank notes from all over. I collect them wherever I go.

Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Australia, Morroco, Spain & UK.

Australian money is probably my favorite...very interesting. I like the Japanese notes too.

I like Aussie notes -- the plastic rocks -- but why is there an old homeless woman on the $5 bill? :)

In HK three banks (HSBC, Standard Chartered, Bank of China) print our $20, $50, $100, $500 and $1000 notes, so while each denomination has the same colour and size the designs are different so that's pretty cool.

But then they re-introduced the $10 bill to replace the $10 coin but none of the banks wanted to print it, so the Government picked it up and produced a super-ugly purple bill that looks nothing like any other banknote in HK. Then they decided to switch the colours on the $20 and $50 so that a $20 kinda looks like an old $50 now and a $50 kinda looks like the old $10 (which only serves to remind you how goddamned ugly the new $10 is).

Here's a picture of three of the old notes:

http://www.passplanet.com/HK/money_hk.htm

Not included are the old $10s, which were green, and the $1000, which is orange.

The new ones:

http://www.info.gov.hk/hkma/new_hk_banknotes/eng/index.htm

And to highlight how different the red-headed stepchild of a $10 note the new one is, here it is:

Plastic with a see through window for the water-mark. I like plastic bills, stay cleaner and fresh and almost impossible to rip.

This bill gets +1000 points because I can buy lunch for 2 people and a pepsi with it. About 1.25$US.

£50 notes are GODDAMNED ANNOYING. They're ever-so-slightly too tall for my wallet so the top gets crushed, and people look at you funny if you use it.

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
"£50 notes are GODDAMNED ANNOYING. They're ever-so-slightly too tall for my wallet so the top gets crushed, and people look at you funny if you use it."

tell me about it - i got about 1 grand in cash before i came to the UK whilst at Narita airport and it was in 50 quid notes....

Try using one of those fuckers in a bar in the out regions of "oop north" - dangerous and involves a billion questions.

Anyways, teh old japanese yen notes - the 5000 yen note has changed and there is now a 2000 yen note.

Norwegian notes are pretty cool. Not at a glance, but if you study them carefully, since they have so many weird anti-copy measures. Every graphic object is made up of smaller objects which are made up by even smaller objects in many layers... and there are watermarks and invisible symbols and unusual printing-techniques all over the place.

50 kroner, picturing Peter Christian Asbjørnsen, writer, who's best known for collecting and publishing tons of folk-tales and myths:

I've still got a god damn 5 pound note in my wallet, and another 5 pound in coins, cuz when I got back to the states nobody would trade it back because the tax they'd levy would be so high.

Girl: "You'll only get about five dollars back or so."
Me: "But I've got like twenty dollars worth of money here."
Girl: "Well we don't accept coins."
Me: "HuH? So I'm screwed?"
Girl: "well you can save them for the next time you go to England! Hehe! have a nice day."

She was so happy with her solution... but I wanted some damn lunch, not hope. Hope can't feed me shit. McDonalds can, and McDonalds doesn't accept hope. They take money.
