Baten Kaitos 2 trailer

I must say I was surprised when Namco announced this game. I would have expected another GC Tales game since they can't seem to stop announcing new ones on the PS2 nowadays and Symphonia was a hit. Having said that I am very glad they are coming out with this. I really enjoyed the first one and I dig the art style. This and Zelda will be a nice send off for the Cube. Hopefully people will buy it.

Release the first one without sluggish battles.

"Is that all you got!?"

I am not sure this game will make it to the west though :(

Is this just a CG trailer or is there gameplay?

some gameplay in it too.

I think it will. I think Namco really wants to turn this into a regular series (one that will actually be around for a while) with this one and Baten Kaitos for the DS. BK2 and BKDS will help each other out and get the series name out there more I think.

I think it's Nintendo that wants to turn it into a series more than Namco. The project was originally a shared concept and I think Nintendo will pick up the IP and carry it as a major RPG series. It has a lot of potential.

As far as the problems with BK1 go, I think they're addressing them pretty well... the flashing of damage on the screen seems to indicate they're doing away with the damage screen at the end of each turn. That should speed up battles enormously. I just hope there's enough new areas. I'm sure there'll be some stuff repeated from the first game, but I hope they don't reuse too much.

may be its just me but everything seemed faster and smoother gameplay/animation wise (from the little i could see), though it was hard to make out :/

It actually sold more in the US suprisingly though. It sold approx. 75k in Japan, and it's at about 110k here. PSO 3 sold a lot more here than in Japan as well now that I think about it, do the Japanese just not like card-type gameplay in their RPGs?

Looks great! :D And it has great potencial indeed! (regular RPG here I come :) ).
I hope it comes to the west (I guess that's a sure thing since Nintendo is publishing it and it sold more here after all)...

I'll play some BK this weekend...

You could turn that off.

Nintendo needs to cultivate some kind of RPG market for their consoles. You barely ever see a traditional JRPG on a Nintendo console becuase they simply dont sell. This is why BK2 is such a surprise. The original totally bombed but its still getting a sequel. This is encouraging. Surely Namco didnt make this decision without a little financial incentive from Nintendo.

They didnt even make SC3 for Gamecube even though it sold really well. I just cant see the logic in this decision. Namco are either really inconsistent or there are deals being made that we know nothing about.

If they flesh out the card system more and axe the shitty voice acting, I'd be willing to sign on for installment two.

The card system definitely holds a lot of potential. Some of the aspects in the original were quite random so hopefully these will be adressed in BK2. Game looks great though. I'll be picking it up. Just hire a new voice director please.

I know that, but I never did. Did it display the damage on screen when you turned it off?

There's an interview with Monolithsoft in the new Nintendo Dream actually, and they state that the battle speed will be massively improved in BK2, though they are keeping specific details secret for now.

One of my biggest disappointments ever, the real time silly "sucking on the bottlle like a little baby" stop watch. Does the sequel include an option for true turn based (non-stopwatch combat) battle?

Cool, but I hope it's not just the battle speed they're improving, but rather, the speed of the rest of the game. Dungeons like the one where you're treading through mud (or snow), or the awkward block pushing one that took forever to navigate, plus climbing up and down ladders were also rather slow. Plus it took forever to get to the meat of the story. Trimming this game down to about 35 or so hours, improving the speed of combat/gameplay, improving the voices (which should be a given if Nintendo is publishing/translating in the West), and it could be a great game.

And yeah, I've always wondered why Nintendo never embraced RPGs, even though they were the company that first tried to push the genre in the west. One of the main reasons why after SNES I didn't really pay much attention to their consoles.

Actually, I'd rank Nintendo 2nd among JP RPG makers, just behind Square Enix and ahead of Namco. The thing is, most of their games tend to be genre fusions or spinoffs (Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Zelda, etc)... they've never really had that "great" DQ/FF style traditional RPG though (besides Mother arguably).

yep, they make quirky rpgs and not the traditional looking ones.

If Nintendo/Namco address the mostly terrible voice acting and slow battles, we have ourselves a winner.

If you notice, the battle timer is now GONE. YAY! :)

The battle HUD looks much more fleshed out and easier to read, too.

yea and don't agree that BK's battle system was random. If you placed your best card in your deck, you would get these cards. Plus you could arrange so you get combos easily.

You could still see the damage caused, but not with the same detailed descriptions. I turned the damage screen off like 10 mins into the game and I had no trouble playing the game anyway.

Looking good.
I think it's time to finish off BK1 then.

I'll be picking this up if it comes out over here.

For Revolution suppossedly.

That would be so good. I loved GS/GS2 and I've always been waiting for a console version.

The first was a true example of a great concept(s) with so-so execution. I'm sure they will fix the most obvious problems which will improve the game tenfold. The only part I am worried about is the character designs, story and overall length of the game. While I enjoy a good 40+ hour RPG, it has to have a good set of fleshed out characters and story worth paying attention to in order to justify 40+ hours of gameplay.

They should hire that Tri-Gun guy who helped with Tales on the character designs to spruce up the characters a bit. :)

BK had a nice battle system with a surprising amount of depth to it... you couldn't just level-spam to win, you needed to maintain proper decks and experiment to find enemies' weaknesses. There was a lot of strategy you could use - what 'disposable' cards to throw out on a turn in order to optimize your attack on the next turn, using series of cards with no conflicting elements, and also - is it worth it to use a fire and a water card, if that's all you have, to try and get enough power to use a finisher?

One other thing I liked was that, even though you can literally avoid every enemy in a dungeon up till the boss, you were encouraged to fight, not just to raise levels, but to get some useful cards for your deck. The way items would change character forced you to be constantly maintaining your deck, even though some people found it annoying.

yep...basicly grab all dark and light cards you could. Because they did the most damage. I remember that I used a lot of dark cards that worked great on almost all bosses.

But I recall rumors, way way back (think they even started before GC was released), of Golden Sun for GC as well...or at least a Camelot-developed RPG. What happened to that?

Yeah. I like the fact that your party's HP gauge stays on screen at all times too.

I think it's still in the works AFAIK.

Don't be too quick to dismiss the battle timer. Dont forget that you didn't get the limit until you leveled up, this might just be an early part of the game.
