Battle Garegga or Batsugun?

Only getting one (for now). Which one is worth getting first? Toaplan goodness or Raizing madness? Bright and colorful or brown and industrial? Make my decision for me, GAF!

Never played Batsugun but you really can't go wrong with Battle Garegga. Too bad the Sat version can get a bit pricey on ebay :(

Garegga, easily. Even if it doesn't look as good, it's still one of the most amazingly balanced shooters in existence.

What does that mean exactly? You mean, it isn't cheap like a Darius Gaiden?

And Batsugun looks better? Interesting. I thought the demo of Garegga that comes w/ Souky was pretty damn good looking. I think what tips the scale is the amount of planes/characters--the Kingdom Grandprix cast in Garegga. Batsugun is cheaper though and there's something about it that appeals to me. Also, isn't Toaplan the king of big bosses or something? I needs me some big bosses!

Ebay has Garegga, the cheapest, at $95 right now. Insane, yes, but all of us here are insane.

Batsugun is a great shooter, but when you put it next to Battle Garegga it has no chance.

Garegga is one of the finest vertical shooters ever created, it's really that simple. :)

Okay, so I decided on Battle Garegga. Got it yesterday in the mail and had a late-night session before bed and I still can't wipe the smile off my face. I loved everything about it: controls are tight, the re-arranged soundtrack, the amount of crap on-screen. Wish I could tate but my Sony's way too big. I play "Side" style so it's full-screen but scrolling horizontally. Okay, some questions:

I figured out how to turn the option screen to English, but what does the "S-Option" On/Off do? By default, it's off. Also, how do I unlock the Kingdom Grandprix cast?

My favorite level so far is the stormy clouds/lightning stage (6?). Great stuff.

S-Option gives each plane its own unique option formation, including formations that you'd normally have to do special tricks with item-grabbing to activate. You can turn on the Kingdom Grandprix characters by switching on "Guest Character" (or something like that).

Glad you're enjoying it. :D It's one of my all-time favorite shooters (and games, period). Everything feels *just right* and the music and atmosphere work perfectly together. I need to pull the Saturn out again soon.

Cool... glad you're liking Battle Garegga! I didn't fully appreciate this game until years after its release on the Saturn. It's a testament to how many shooters - and how many *great* shooters - there were on that system. It, along with Radiant Silvergun, still get frequent play on my SS.

Batsugun is insane. It'll make you sweat... maybe not quite as much as DDPDOJ Death Label mode, but it's rightfully perched near the top of the Manic Shooter pedestal.

That really is a tough one. You can't go wrong either way really.

Glad you're happy w/ your purchase.

It really is comparing apples to oranges. Personally, I'd choose Batsugun, but I'm also a huge Toaplan fan, so it's a bit subjective...

How would you compare Garegga to Soukyugurentai? Love that one on the Saturn...
Very different games... I remember not liking the character designs in Soukyugurentai or the weird mix of 2D/3D graphics, which didn't quite "gel" that well... Psikyo was much better at using pre-rendered graphics and animations in their shooters (although their explosions were always pretty dull). I also remember the text screens looking exactly like those in Evangelion. Garegga is much more of a traditional shooter, while Soukyugurentai was going for something different in the gameplay department.

Pro Gear No Arashi is my shit.

I really wish there were more horizontal shooters out there. Seems like most are vert.

Hell yes. The 2D craftsmanship of Arashi is awesome. Unfortunately, AFAIK, it was never ported to a home system. I wish Cave would release a shooter pack that had stuff like this, along with Guwange (which kicks so much ass), Esprade, Dangun Feveron, etc. Bring it! :)

Yeah, so Batsugun is next for me just cuz I totally dig Toaplan's art style--though Salamander Deluxe Pack is calling me. I've always had a hard-on for the Life Force series since I was young. Seeing it at Playland @ 42nd and being amazed at the whole techno-organic vibe of the gfx still brings back good memories. Plus, it'd be nice to play true horizontal rather then the "side" way I'm playing all these verts for my Saturn. That's actually one of the big plusses for Souky--it was designed for the wide angle of a tv, even as a vert.

Speaking of Toaplan, who's played this, it looks fantastic:

Outzone review

Outzone is Commando/Mercs/Warzone type of game - featuring Toaplan style power-ups and level design. Needless to say, it's pretty good.

I always wanted to play Garegga but never got around to it. This might be the time to finally go ahead and play it.

shmups are so cool. :)

Oh, it's an Amiga game developed by Core Design.

ah ok, thanks izzy. i need to find this damn game.

metro: Progear is Arcade only. Garegga is Arcade/Saturn, not sure about Batsugun other than arcade.

"Progear is Arcade only. Garegga is Arcade/Saturn, not sure about Batsugun other than arcade."

wait so the person is considering buying an arcade machine???

Batsugun is available on Saturn.

I know of people who own Progear (and other) boards, though. Often they'll use a small self-contained box (called a "supergun") to play the board on a monitor or a TV.

Interesting. I put on "S-Option" and the ability to switch Option positions was gone (although I was using strictly the Kingdom Grandprix characters last night so it may just be specifically for them). Also, what's the level editor about? I think it only allows you to choose stage order, correct? The game on "Normal" isn't too tough, btw. I can get to the 3rd stage without dying. Nothing to crow about, but then again, I've never 1CC'd a shmup. People who have gotta be all sorts of crazy! :D

As an aside, my Saturn battery friggin' died again. Bah!

Seeing as how Batsugun was pretty much made by Cave (some of the staff was in TOAPLAN at the time), that fits pretty well -- now, doesn't it? :)

Indeed. :) But IIRC, the hit box on your ship in Batsugun felt like a football field compared to the tiny 1-to-4-pixel ones of modern-day Cave shooters. I think we have Radiant Silvergun to thank for that trend, but I'm no shooter history expert!
