BATTLEFIELD HEADS TO THE YEAR 2142

Well, that's the informed word as BF2: Modern Combat's senior producer drops cryptic hints about the next Battlefield game

17:25 EA's and Digital Illusions' next instalment in the Battlefield series looks like it'll be set in the future.

Hints about a new Battlefield sequel have been dropped by Dan Blackstone, senior producer on console game Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. In a recent interview with website Shacknews, Blackstone promised that "something very big" is shortly to be announced in regard to the series and went on to offer a cryptic clue about what's to be unveiled.

"One other interviewer asked this [as in, what's next for the Battlefield series] and I gave him a hint, so it's only fair that I do the same for you: 3213/3X2. Or said another way: S.R. 4588164," Blackstone said.

Subsequent to the appearance of this cryptic clue, a couple of maths geniuses have wrestled with the numbers to reveal that '3213/3X2' works out as '2142' and that 'S.R. 4588164' (S.R. standing for 'square root') also works out as '2142'. It's virtually concrete information that EA and Digital Illusions are planning Battlefield 2142 - but of course we'll have to wait for an official word.

I wonder what DICE will do with a next-gen sci-fi battlefield. Could be really great.

The funny thing about this, is that when BF2 was announced, I thought to myself "I'd rather much have a futuristic Battlefield. They'll probably do that next..."

Should be interesting to see how it turns out. :)

There've been rumblings about this so I'm tempted to believe this news.

It's nice to see DICE leaving the done-to-death WW2/contemporary warfare settings.

Wow. I remember playing Battlefield 1942 for the first time and thinking "this type of game would be so awesome with a futuristic setting". I still like the BF games we've had so far(not including most of the expansions) but if this game becomes a reality, I could see it easily becoming my favorite game in the series. The only thing I'd be worried about are weapon designs..

The only problem with a futuristic setting is that all the weapon and vehicle designs will have to be thought up, instead of using existing weapons/vehicles. But I think DICE can pull it off.

As long as they keep it realistic and dont go overboard with plasma weapons and things like that, i'll be the first to preorder

In terms of Quality The Battlefield series is like Mount Kilimanjaro and Halo is the little hill in my back yard that people sled down when it gets cold.

This is the first thing that popped in my head too when I heard about BF 2142!

Massivs scale tribes type battles would be awesome!

Ok now I'm interested in a Battlefield game! :D

I'll make a bold prediction.. patch BF2142 patch 1.02. "EA & DICE are listening to the masses and bringing you back to Wake Island!"

Unfortunately, due to global warming all players must fight for control in scuba gear.

Yes they're dropping it in favor of the futuristic warfare settings, which is a completely fresh idea. :lol

I' actually like to see another WWII BF game. I like the diversity in weapons, flying planes has never been as good since, and tank battles were at their best in 1942.

I hope the first next gen TRIBES on a console is a good as the original. It's funny that still no fps has touched TRIBES in any way expect graphics.
Agreed. Tribes > All, when comparing online squad/team FPS w/ vehicles.

Tribes - Most amazing FPS I've ever played
Tribes 2 - Launched too early, 2 years of patches, etc. made it one of the best FPS ever
Tribes: Vengeance - Horrible

Ok, now this is a battlefield I'm interested in. I just hope they are are up to the task of being creative with what they can come up with.
