CORONADO, Calif. (AP) — Republican presidential prospect Ben Carson on Thursday compared the Islamic State group to American patriots willing to die for freedom.

In a speech to the Republican National Committee's winter meeting outside San Diego, the former neurosurgeon and conservative favorite praised American patriots for their willingness to give their lives for their beliefs. Then he mentioned the Islamic State group.

"They got the wrong philosophy, but they're willing to die for what they believe, while we are busily giving away every belief and every value for the sake of political correctness," he said as Republican officials from across the country interrupted him with applause. "We have to change that."

Commonly known as ISIS, the Islamic State group has been responsible for hundreds of deaths across the Middle East in recent months. Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for recent beheadings of Western journalists and aid workers. One of the suspects in the recent Paris terror attacks claimed allegiance to the Islamic State group.

A Republican National Committee spokesman had no immediate response when asked to comment on Carson's remarks, which came as part of a 35-minute luncheon address.

After the speech, Carson said it's "ridiculous" to suggest he was likening American patriots to the Islamic State.

Uh.... what the heck was he doing then if Carson thinks its ridiculous that he was comparing American patriots to the Islamic State.

Also, Republicans, do you clap for anything or were they just not paying attention to the actual words coming out of people's mouths?

They got it all wrong, but let's become more like em!

Yes, because Islamists are so well known for their free speech positions and tolerance of viewpoints they find offensive.

To be fair, the only actual comparison he drew was that both groups were willing to die for their beliefs. He didn't say the methodology of the groups were the same or that they were informed by the same ideology.

Still, obviously a vast oversimplification. Ben Carson is nuts any given day of the week.

Well American patriot is the wrong word to use, but I think the far-right in any country have a lot in common with the Muslim extremist they pruport to hate.

Sexism, homophobia, cruel treatment to the outsider groups, willingness to use violence, and just plain being full of hate. I could actually go on all day. Pick any random issue and you will find that usually the far-right and ISIS agree in some parallel way.

I truly believe he did this because he knew it would garner news and accusations, thus allowing him to play victim. I understand the analogy: the patriots were willing to die for their honorable believes, whereas IS is willing to die for their barbaric beliefs. But just like his Nazi analogy a few months ago I can't help but wonder why would you risk those headlines unless you want those headlines.

Brilliant surgeon but it's pretty clear his political views are ridiculous and his argument style is poor.

Excited to see how he performs in debates.

He's not wrong. The title is misleading, though.

They are similar in the way American patriots are willing to die for their country and values, the Islamic State is as well. That is true.

The difference here is what the values are. And is it in the defense of these values or the offense of them.

Well he has a point. We are all blinded by our own self interest. We need collective interests if we ever want to achieve a more peaceful society. If a man is a serial killer for pleasure he has no desire for morality and he's guided by his own self interest. We need collective interests.

Ben Carson is like Rick James in the Chappelle's Show sketch. This isn't the first time he has said something, then almost immediately denied having said it. He should've just stuck to medicine and left politics alone.

What he's saying isn't wrong. ISIS and some American patriots are driven by the same emotions, but they manifest these emotions in very different ways.

Carson gives me the impression he lost a lot of money in a Ponzi scheme or something. Something just seems off in his evolution from quiet surgeon to camera chasing bomb thrower. There's a lot of money in being a black conservative on television, and he's been a master at playing that victim card. To be clear I have no problem with black conservatives, I'm just dismayed that black conservatives only seem to be trotted out to make ridiculously over the top statements - sometimes comments about black people that a white commentator might not be able to get away with. In short I want to believe that such a brilliant man is better than suggesting the US today under Obama is beginning to look like Nazi Germany.

As a surgeon with knowledge of health care and the health care system you would think that he'd have some interesting things to say. Instead his views aren't any different from a variety of right wingers: tort reform, health savings accounts, buying coverage across state lines, etc. A variety of outright bad ideas with some decent ones. Regardless of your views on the ACA it's hard to deny that it takes a variety of cost cutting ideas and throws them at the wall together. From a variety of philosophical slants; the healthcare exchanges idea was championed by the Heritage Foundation in the 90s for instance. But Carson, like most bombastic right wing personalities, seems to have no interest in debating ideas on the merits and instead just repeats talking points.

I really don't think this guy is right in the head. Every time I've seen him, he looks a bit.... Slow. Sorry for not being pc, but I'm sure Ben Carson would approve of my choice of words.

I wonder if he performed on himself whilst he was practicing.
