Best Buy Question.

BB used to have this thing where if you put >$300 on your BB CC you got something like 6 months no interest financing. This would be really useful to me right now, but the CC company doesn't know shit and the BB I just called wasn't even able to tell me the WEEKLY specials, much less this one which I think was more just like a general special that always ran (I used it on two separate occasions myself). So is it still around in any form? If so, I'm headin' down tonight. Much appreciated.
 
Best Buy changes their CC specials weekly. It varies from cameras to home theater to computers etc., and sometimes is on any purchase and other times on purchases $XXX amount and above. You will have to talk to an employee (at customer service) to find out this week's specials.

Yeah I know what you're talking about and unfortunately they all suck this week (digital camcorders & appliances, yay!, oh computers too), but they used to also have this other thing that was always running where if you spent >$300, it could even be multiple items, you got 6 months no interest. Man I feel like I'm talking about the Holy Grail here, but I swear it existed. I used it twice!
 
You're not crazy, they have those too. IIRC, those run for several weeks then expire. I can't remember how often they run those, but I think it's somewhere around once a quarter. Also, those are not advertised regularly, so you will have to talk to someone in Customer Service -- they should have a flip-book with all current CC promotions.

The Best Buy card gives you 90 days no interest on any purchase or 6 months no interest on any purchase totaling $299 or more before tax. Those are always available to you; the other specials regarding appliances, digital cameras, camcorders, home theater, and so on all change weekly. Any cashier or customer service rep will be able to tell you as there's a reference card right behind them.

Just be warned: the interest rate is about 24% once you go past the no interest period.

Yes that's a very important point. It's been quite useful to me on a few occasions, but I always plan ahead because not only is the subsequent rate high, but the interest accrues while you are on the free period and if you don't pay it off in time you get hit with all six months of accrued interest. Fucked up, but that's why you have to read the fine print with these things.

This is all pretty funny because the CC company and the customer service person at the Best Buy store had no idea what I was talking about when I asked to make sure the 6-month offer was still available.

This won't come as a surprise to anyone, but they don't train you very well at Best Buy, particularly with respect to the operations department (cashiers and customer service). The customer service people are generally more knowledgeable since they deal with returns, CC applications, and regular cashiering, but just like any major chain, it's all about getting the employees onto the salesfloor as quickly as possible with minimal training.

I'd recommend using the Best Buy card for big purchases, and then just cancelling it when you're done with it. I did precisely that, but then with BB's increasingly abysmal selection, I rarely shop there anymore for anything.

Certainly, on my part it was more of a comment on how difficult it is to get a simple answer to a simple question from the only people who should actually know, or at least know to whom to refer me for the answer. Basically both people told me that there were only the weekly specials and that's it.

That's basically all I do. I bought all my current gen hardware at BB and my digicams. I buy games there most of the time, though selection really does vary tremendously from store to store. I won't cancel it though, basically I've put about $500-1000 on it on several different trips, paid it off, and had it handy for whenever it was convenient, so it's nice to have. One thing I won't ever do is just use it like a normal credit/debit card or not pay off my balance before the promotion expiration.
