I'm planning on going back to Europe this summer with one of my buddies and I figured the GA crew could give me some feedback on the best/most American friendly places.

-Went to Ireland 2 summers ago
- France last summer

I saw a lot of cities in both countries, but I was only in Ireland for 5 days and wouldn't mind going back.

I'm 19 by the way. Same with my buddy.

Opinions? Amsterdam sounds cool.

Madrid is awesome and really cheap. I had a great time there but only got to spend about 4 days and would love to go back. There's tons of stuff to do and the weather is awesome.

I bet Amsterdam is fun I've never been there, don't know about the prices on anything.

Come and visit Amsterdam and I'll give you the best tour ever, free of charge :)

edit: as for other places; Barcelona is great as well.

I'd go to either Milano or Madrid. Cheap or not, it sure would be awesome to see Real Madrid and AC Milan play soccer :)

Amsterdam is expensive...and I didn't like it there too much. Although it is a nice place to walk around scenic wise...people wise...it isn't the safest place. Anne Frank's house was really cool. I say to myself now...I was in Anne Frank's house. weird. You should make it there sometime in your life.

I recommend Cologne, Germany and the Cinque Terre(stay in Riomaggiore, Vernazza might not be bad either) in Italy.

Place I'd like to go to include Spain and the rest of Germany(have heard Berlin is good). I had a blast in the Cinque Terre(and Rome too) and Cologne though...the highlights of my trip.

For what I was paying for stuff and for how much fun I had...Cologne, Germany is the place. Great great beer there called "Gilden". Drink it...drink lots of it.

Is Amsterdam actually cool? If you want to smoke why not light up a jay in Paris? Amsterdam sounds like a cultural wasteland.

Out of the cities on my trip: Vienna wasn't too bad although it was still expensive. Actually they were all ok except for London.

Most of the travellers I met all suggested Prague as a really cheap city.
I would check out Budapest as well.

Well of course you shouldn't visit Amsterdam just to legally light up a joint, that would be a waste of time and money (although the accessibility of drugs are a great plus for myself).
Like ErasureAcer said, the Anne Frank house is pretty incredible if you're interested in it. The canals are really nice and give a great vibe to the city as a whole. There are a number of beautiful parcs, and loads of great clubs to go to.
Then there's the red light district, which is pretty popular among tourists, but I don't really get what the fuss is about. It might be interesting to see and walk through for half an hour, but other than that, it seems to me like a waste of time (never been there).

If you're someone who generally doesn't really plan a lot, and enjoys just strolling through a place, Amsterdam is without a doubt a good choice to visit.

In the end though, I think Amsterdam is a city you'll need to know thoroughly to really enjoy it. For one, there aren't a lot of great things i would consider doing if I was a tourist visiting it. It's basically great to live in, and walk around in, but if you're visiting for a couple of days and you wanna do ten thousand things a day, going from one place to the other, Amsterdam isn't what you're looking for. As Gregory said, Prague might be a better alternative. My brother had nothing but good things to say about it. (Plus the beer is cheap as F*CK)

If you decide to check out Amsterdam though, be sure to pm me about it. I'll let you know what places are cheapest (like the "meander" where beer is only 60 cents on mondays), and overall most fun to go to.

You should check who's touring over there when you go. Nothing makes a concert cooler or your friends more jelous when you see a cool band in Europe.

Yeah...there wasn't much to do in Amsterdam. Anne Frank's house was the highlight...I was runnin low on money too(last place on my trip before I flew home)...so I didn't get to hit up any clubs/bars. The people at my hostel sucked too...so yeah...my time was spent walking the streets and admiring the beauty of the city. I also joined in on a legalize weed parade...that marched through the city with floats and lots of people dancing and jamming to the music...was quite a unique experience. Later I heard a marching band going through the streets...don't know what that was about...but uh yeah...strange things happen in Amsterdam.

Women wise...I wasn't too impressed. I think women of northern Italy(liguria region) still hold that one.

If you do go to amsterdam...only plan on staying a night...maybe 2.

There is countless things to do in Cinque Terre...go there dude. Kayaking, hiking, exploring the 5 towns(lots of fun), drinking cheap wine, heck even their bars were pretty inexpensive...relaxing at the beach(sand or rock beaches)...looking at the beautiful women...and if you meet some cool people like I did there...well then you'll have a blast.

And since you're in the area...go down to Rome too...lots of things to see there and not too expensive either.

Yeah reading your post, it makes me realise how important it is to meet some cool people to hang around with. It really makes visiting places a whole lot more fun.
And what a pity that the people at your hostel sucked, cause usually the dutch are considered to be nice, down to earth and overall relaxed people to make conversation with.

Czech Republic, Prague.

2nd that, Prague is an excellent city to visit, extremely beautiful, great beer and cheap too just watch out for the loony drivers.
Warsaw, Poland is also a fab place to visit too, any place in eastern, southern europe rules,
Croatia is also a happening place to visit.

Budapest (Hungary)
Quality place. Very very cheap beer (loads of cool pubs). Great transport system - also cheap. Lots to see and a lot of culture.

Barcelona (Spain)
Loads to see. I was there last month and really surprised by the amount of stuff to do. The Nou Camp is a must - get a game in if you can, that's what I did. It's not as cheap as Eastern Europe but it's no London either. There's this big street called Los Ramblas that's really amazing. Loads of street performers, stalls, restaurants, huge markets - it's well worth seeing.

Scotland
If you liked Ireland, then Scotland would also be a banker for you. This is also a shameless plug for my country. The scenery in Scotland is absolutely nuts and rivals anything in the world easily. I live in the Highlands and it's just stunning up here. There's quite a lot of stuff to see - Scotlands steeped in history and heritage. Like the Irish, we also like a drink and you'll find pubs of all sorts.

I'm off to Amsterdam on Thursday for a few days. Recommend some clubs? Also, do they have dress codes or does anything go?

We're meant to be finding a hostel out there - suppose if anybody knows any good ones, recommendations wouldn't go amiss (nor advice on ones to avoid)!

Ireland is pretty expensive now, but still fairly unique (i think).

Barcelona is a GREAT city, and isn't anywhere near as expensive.

Go east if you want really cheap. Prague is supposedly beautiful.

Anywhere in the world where you can order a joint from a menu is a great place to visit.

I love Amsterdam in my own warped way....

Hey Tim, waar zit je in A'dam?

For a Finer World
If you want to have a really inexpensive but nice holiday - and have a lot of time, go travelling through eastern Europe. Start from Sofia, Bulgaria - travel to the Black Sea coast, then move on through Romania, Hungary (Budapest is lovely) and Czech (Praque is nice)/Slovakia. Don't forget Poland, and do visit the Baltic states - Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

It's all safe & modern, but also a nice, not too "touristy" track.

Barcelona cheap ?
Since when ?

I found it quite cheap two years ago. Admittedly, a lot can change in two years..

At least things like groceries etc. were a lot cheaper than here.

Nah...if you found it cheap then I suppose you'll find chip now as well. Anyways BCN is losing a lot of tourism that now is going to the western Europe countries. People complaints about the prices being too expensive.
What I know is that there are two kinds of tourists: those who come here looking for cheap beer and those others that come to see the beautiful amusements the city has: Gaudi, Picasso, Roman City, Colón, Les Rambles, el Camp Nou...
Well, there are tons of things :).
