The "All-American Chocolate Cake" from Costco.

Now, I knew beforehand that Costco's bakery was pretty damn good, but this cake just, well, takes the cake.

At first glance, it looks just like your standard round chocolate cake. Then you realize that it's a little bigger than your Safeway or Albertson's round cake. It's a couple inches taller and wider. Even considering that, I was still surprised when I tried picking one up in the store. The thing weighs SEVEN POUNDS. That's one dense cake.

We finally got one a couple of weeks ago (had company coming), and if you like chocolate, then you owe it to yourself to check this beast out. The cake itself is just a four layer chocolate cake, with chocolate frosting on the top, sides, and between layers, with chocolate flakes on the side of the cake. However, the cake is moist, and very dark in color. The frosting is even darker (so much that it almost looks black), and VERY rich.

A word of warning, if you pick one of these monsters up, get a large container to freeze the bulk of it, as unless there's going to be 5+ people eating this, you will not be able to finish it before it goes stale.

I've had the sheet cakes there, too, and they're NOT the same. The All-American Chocolate Cake is a whole lot darker and richer than their sheet cakes.

As good as that sounds, I might have had better. I have had the pleasure of experiencing a chocolate cake like no other on two occasions. I cannot remember its name - it was a cake from Austria, made from a recipe designed for some King there long ago. It was quite simply, a little taste of heaven. I'll have to try and look it up online and order some. It was just breathtakingly good.

edit Found it: http://sachertorte.sacher.com/index_en.asp. I know what I'm ordering for my next birthday! It's actually surprisingly inexpensive. go buy!

If you do get one, consider getting some milk to go along with it. It's one of those cakes that pretty much requires a nice glass of cold milk to go with it.

Bah. None of these compare to my Extreme Chocolate Fudge Cake, or the White Chocolate Monkey Jism Fudge Cake.

Secret that chocolate cake bakers don't want you to know:

Substitute Coke for the Water in a cake recipe. It results in a light, fluffy, moist cake which also benefits from the caramel coloring. Warning, though. Do not use Diet Coke. Baked sugar substitutes can be toxic.
