Best Intro in a game

Shadow of The Collosus.

I just can't skip it. Always have to watch it everytime i boot the game and it's also great to put you in the mood.

I'd nominate Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, if not for the CG style alone. The cutscenes are some of the best I've seen.

And overall, I'd say Final Fantasy VIII.

MGS 2 hands down. Top notch Hollywood style production values....

..and then the rest of the game after the initial boat mission started...ugh...

As far as "interactive" intros go, God of War and MGS3.

Kingdom Hearts 2. (best parts of the series in cg.)
Super Mario 64(Watching Mario jumping out of the pipe...in 3d...now that was next gen)

The best intro to a game, for me, is also one of the worst.

I remember seeing the opening for Sonic Adventure on the DC back in 1999. Being the young, ignorant little scamp I was, (I skipped the 32-bit era), I had no knowledge that they'd use CG to showcase the game at the start.

My jaw was on the floor, and I was so damn pumped for the unimaginable experience that was to come. The colors! The speed! The fluid motion and awesome environments rendered on a new piece of hardware hinted at unlimited potential for what would come next.

Then the game started.

Oh shit. :(

It was like night to fucking day, with a framerate that made it feel as long. Only after the initial awe of the CG opening wore off was I able to appreciate the graphics for what they were.

EDIT: If I had to pick the absolute best, though, I'd have to agree with those who have said Panzer Dragoon. I never played much of the game, but I remember going through some of the early bits at a freind's. Such an awe-inspiring opening...

There is a reason the first game I thought of when I read the title was Onimusha 3

Kingdom Hearts 2 gets an honorable mention though

Starcraft: Brood War (awesome)
Metal Gear Solid 2
Resident Evil CODE: Veronica
Shadow Of The Colossus
Zone Of Enders 2
Final Fantasy VIII

Super Smash Bros Melee, its like getting a Nintendo facial.

Sonic Adventure DC was pretty cool as well, how they mixted the cartoon graphics with the realistic graphics. True, it no longer looks as realistic...but oh well.

Can't wait for Kingdom Hearts 2, but that reminds that I also really like KH1 intro too, another fave I forgot, so I really look forward to part 2's.

The original Panzer Dragoon. The production values (visuals, at least) have long been surpassed, but not the impact. Absolutely stirring.

Edit -

Thank you.

The entire Panzer Dragoon series is on another level that's difficult to express to those who haven't played them. And if you've played all the games then the impact is even greater.

indeed, I used to just let teh PD intro play on repeat whilst I did my homework and drew --- very inspiring.

Also, Colossus is not only a great great intro --- but it has such soul after you play the game - you realize the intro is in realtime, the scale is in realtime, that path on the canyons is somewhere on the streaming disk, that huge epic bridge is actually there .....
there's just such a sense of wonder, knowing that the game didn't show you anything pre-rendered or over dramatized.... on top of that it even still is a great intro.

EDIT: speaking of PD ---- I would pay full price, for a "game" that just let me just explore, in realtime, the environments from the Panzer Dragoon intros.

So many console choices, and no one mentions anything from the PC

Fallout 1+2 is probably one of the best I've seen, simple, memorable and so effective in setting up the game

most PC stuff can be so nerd-boner cheezball --- but, to be on your side, I really love the b&w animatics in both Homeworlds --- great paintings

FFVIII- I think i forced every friend of mine to watch that intro. Truly unbelievable

Soul Blade-Probably most watched intro ever. The music, damn!

FFIII- The opening with the storm, then the calm piano music, then the start of the story, then the game credits with the soldiers marching in the snow, and the BEST. FF. THEME. EVER.

Chrono Trigger-first RPG i ever played. I left the title screen for a few seconds, just in case, and then the sweeping music and the in-game intro made me lose my mind!

-edit-
Jesus Christ, i hadnt watched that soul blade intro in ages. SHIVERS i tell ya!!!!

Suikoden 3 is very good, oh and Megaman 2.

Since I can't pick one, here's a combination of the all-time greats:

*happy music*
In 200X, the world as at peace. Robots Rock and Roll were living out their days in happiness.
*cue disconcerting music*
Then, one day, a mysterious robot inventor known as Dr. Wily appeared and programmed a virus to turn all household cleaning robots into world warriors.
Megaman: Dr. Wily!? Why!?
Dr. Wily: I plan to enslave this planet by hiding my group of powerful robots in enemy-filled lairs away from the public where they can cause no harm!
Megaman: No!!
*hopeful, mission-like music*
Now, Megaman and his robot dog, Rush, must defeat Dr. Wily and his cohorts. But wait a minute...
*scarf floats through the screen*

...

Protoman?!?!
