Best looking WATER effects in a game!

Waverace Blue Storm
Rogue Leader
Mario Sunshine
Star Fox Adventures
Zelda: TWW
Mario Kart Double Dash
Kirby Air Ride
Mario Golf Toadstool Tour
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
Harvest Moon: Another Wonderful Life
Zelda:Twilight Princess

All of these have pretty good water effects, IMO.

Kirby Air Ride does indeed in the topdown mode.

Forgot:

Pikmin 1 and 2
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Pokemon Colosseum - Gale Of Darkness
Smash Brothers: Melee, the Donkey Kong Stages

yeah sorry cube fans. The cube did do some pretty nice water effects, but its got nothing on HL2 lost coast.

Age of Empires III is fucking beautiful, but you can't 'play' with the water so HL2 wins!

HL2's water is amazing. The way it reacts to the light, its colorization depending on the ground texture, the physics... It's hard to express it in english, but man it looks so damn real !

HL2 for the win. I started it over recently and I still cant get over the water. Its the perfect mix of transparent and reflective

damn, the 'cube was the water effects machine!

plus it had the best image quality (through component) of all the consoles...

I need to hook mine back up, dammit. Especially while I'm waiting for the damn 360 to replenish.

It's not quite fair, as the game isn't available yet, but the Warhawk PS3 demo has far and away the best water we've been shown to date. Nothing even comes remotely close.

Of games available, though, I'd probably go with Half-Life 2. Yeah, it's flat as hell and doesn't react...but it is absolutely beautiful to behold.

Hmm... MGS2 still gets a nod for the rain. the way it hit the ship, trailed off the sides, looked in cutscenes. Incredible still. And when you find a bit of cover on the outside of the ship, you can still see the puddles. And it comes off the character to leave trails on his shoes. It even has him catch a cold. Certainly the best use of rain in a game. Insane.

I still loved Ico's little pond by the windmill for how fun it is to mess with and how great it looks, though it has been surpassed. Warhawk's PS3 demo looks crazy... HL2's is incredible, though a little jagged near the edges where it turns back to land, which breaks the illusion a bit. Also, Twilight Princess's trailer with the canoe looks awesome. So I'm really not sure. That's too tough. I still say MGS2 for best implementation of water though.

Super Mario Sunshine's water blew me away when I first saw it. I think Half Life 2 or Kameo have the best I've seen so far though.

It's not out yet, but the MMO Pirates of the Burning Sea may take many of these games to task when it comes to water...

They need to work on the water where it interacts with anything (i.e. shore, bow, sinking ship, etc.), but it looks quite amazing in its current form. Unfortunately, while the game has some great ideas, it also some silly limitations thus far, but this is a water thread, not a PotBS thread.

For more info, check out Flying Labs' website.

Best water: Half-Life 2, SMS, Kameo, Starfox Adventures, REmake, MGS2 and 3 (in spots) Wave Race BS, FFCC.

Best rain/storm effects: RE4, SotC, MGS2, King Kong.

Go play Champions of Norrath. The game has the most realistic water effects in a game ever
Fuck no it doesn't. It looks alright, but the physics behind it are incredibly simplistic. When next gen rolls around and devs are able to put far more processing behind actual physics, it's going to look so primitive. The only 3d water that will still look impressive after next gen is water that is largely non-interactive or water done to fit the given game stylistically.

Oh please, next-gen still not a valid option.

LotsOfDucks + Eyetoy glass PS3 demo :D

Well, and Half Life 2 for "this gen".

In terms of rain, like most ppl said you cant go past MGS2.Also worth mentioning is the rain in Ninja Gaiden during one of the boss fights.

I want to see Team Kojima go nuts with another raining storm sequence in MGS4. I want to see the next gen equivalent. If this is what they can do on PS2....eyegasm out he yinyang next gen.

Here's hoping for a revolution waverace with water like the SW2000 waverace..

It was so good you could 'feel' the water from watching the vids.... stupid NST, I CURSE AT THE!

Lots of great picks here. I'm surprised however that no one has mentioned Black and White 2. I would have agreed that Mario Sunshine has the best water up until playing that game. It's water seriously breath taking, especially in the evening as the sun is setting.

Here is an example. There are far far better scenes then this but my connection isnt too hot right now and don't feel like surfing a bunch of screens.

Such a beautiful game. <3

Yeah, the SD vs WR thing was short but intense. IMO SD won :) God, I loved that game.
Splashdown's water did look better than WRBS...but Blue Storm offered much more intense, interactive water. SD's obviously did work well with your craft, but it was still fairly flat...

It was amazing looking, though.

Although I'm pretty sure that Zelda: Twilight Princess will dethrone SMS when it's released, on the console side.

You might want to post a picture that supports your opinion, man. :D

Seriously, there is NOTHING special about that water. It looks like a cheap, completely flat DX8 water surface or something.

There are plenty of console games far beyond that...with some of them showing up as early as 2001/2002.

Yes opinions only confuse things don't they.
Yeah, they do. Whenever Link shows up in anything, opinions tend to become a little...schewed.

That doesn't mean I'm NOT curious to know why you feel that way, though. Could you at least explain your opinion? I mean, many shots in this thread speak for themselves, but that Zelda image certainly does not. :P

In all honesty, I've found that the water has looked downright poor in some shots. There was a shot near the docks, for example, that really demonstrated what I mean (though I can't seem to locate it right now).

If you can look at all the non zelda images in this thread and say the water in that shot you posted looks better...your opinion doesnt matter.
