Best MMORPG to lone wolf it in?

emomoonbase

I'm free 2night after my LARPing guild meets.
So I was dabbling with the idea of getting WoW as that's what my friends all play, but I'm not really partial to anything yet. Basically I want to play an MMORPG but I don't want to have to join a group of people to do objectives. Also I'd prefer a game where you don't get killed and looted the first time you set foot out of town. In fact I really don't care about PVP at all, but I might later. Any suggestions?

You're pretty much going to go to WoW then. Only MMORPG I've seen where you can consistently solo your way to 60 if you wanted to. Every other one requires grouping most of the time.

If you dont' want to group with other people, I wouldn't even start. Once you reach 60, you just about HAVE to group up to get shit done.

Eh I'm going on a little over a year now on WoW and only have grouped up maybe a dozen times(not counting PvP). There's a lot you can do solo, and if you get the urge to group, it's always there:)

I made it to level 20 or so in WoW soloing, then I realized that it was just that much more fun to play with friends or just random people. So yeah, I'd say WoW is the most solo-friendly MMORPG out there.

World of Warcraft is not the clear-cut best choice.

Character progression is very solo friendly but the 'End Game' is the opposite. There will be almost nothing for you to do at Level 60. PvE revolves around 5-40 person content; and PvP revolves around medium to large scale battles. Unless you're a Rogue with stealth, there's little hope for solid solo world PvP either.

I'm not sure there is any other solid solo End Game available right now though. The most solo-able End Game of recent MMOs was Star Wars Galaxies, but from what I've heard they made the game much more group-reliant. Any other MMO that may offer a solo End Game to you is probably too old to suit your tastes.

So while World of Warcraft may still be your best bet, just remember that once you reach Level 60, there will be nothing left for you to do as a solo PvE player. If you hate that idea, you may want to do some research on Star Wars Galaxies, City of Heroes, or perhaps even Asheron's Call if you don't mind retro 3D graphics.

As an extra point, if you do enjoy World of Warcraft Level 1-60, you can always make a character in the other faction (Horde vs Alliance faction war) or take a break and wait for The Burning Crusade expansion which will increase the level cap to Level 70 and add 2 new races (and new Level 1-30 content) which should give a casual gamer many more months of solo gameplay.

You have to remember though when giving that sort of advice that PvE is not the only social aspect of an MMO. Someone may prefer to solo for Experience or treasure, but perhaps they enjoy trading with other gamers, or hanging out and talking in taverns. Perhaps they prefer solo PvE but like to PvP as well. Or it may be as simple as not desiring any direct interaction with other players at all but still enjoy the idea that there character exists in a living and evolving virtual world.

wow, or if you want to go with a really old mmo that's tougher to get into, anarchy online. I think that game has a good solo model, it's just that their random quest generator is a bit repetitive.

Aye, a bit repetitive after a while, but the Mission Generators are still awesome. In truth, they're one of the features of any MMO that I miss the most. Being able to customize a personal solo dungeon and customize the type of very useful and desirable item reward(s) you want was very nice.

I believe Anarchy Online is free to play now, too, so it wouldn't hurt to check it out one weekend.

Beautiful sci-fi soundtrack, by the way, better than even Halo in my opinion.

I soloed EQ2 to the max level (before the expansion pack) but once you get there It's only raids If you want the high end gear. WWII online is a mmorpg that you can easily solo, once you get past the terrible graphics and the high learning curve you never go back to other games like bf2.

You want Massive Multiplayer Online Game that you can play without MM? Doesnt get better then WoW. One these days though I going ask for FPS but without first person or shooting and see how that goes :D

evolving world? i wish MMORGPs actually had environments that changed, and that those changes were forever.

To be honest, I'm not quite sure why you'd want to play? I know a lot of people are recommending WoW, but the most engaging and entertaining aspects of the game are PvP and the dungeons. Both of these pretty much require grouping. In fact, grouping itself actually makes the game a lot more fun.

I'm not telling you what to do or anything, but you may want to seriously reconsider getting into a MMO if you don't want the grouping aspect.

i have a lot of friends that would rather solo in an MMO. I never really understood the point of playing a game designed to put you with 1000's of other human beings if you're just going to be playing by yourself.

Because MMORPGs are one of the few RPGs nowadays that offer tons of lands to explore plus character creation. Outside of MMORPGs, the only RPGs that I want to play are Morrowind and the upcoming Oblivion. Plus encounter other real people in the world makes it more interesting (you can help them or attack them).

It's not that I don't plan on ever grouping up with ppl, like I said I have some friends who play it already. What I want to avoid is a game with situations where you are forced to group up to achieve an objective. When I played PSO it was always at random times and my little group was hardly all on at the same time as me so I ended doing a lot of solo runs or had to group with ppl that would just drop out or were a pain to coordinate with. That's why I'm trying to find a game that you are able to solo through if need be.

I'll check out AO though if it's free and see how that goes. Thnx.

WoW definitely sounds like the one for you. I liked it, it allowed me to solo or group depending on my mood.

What?

The whole point of that game is corporate warfare.

There are other points, too. You could say that the whole point of WoW is raiding and PvP, but plenty of people have fun by themselves without doing either.

Now this is maybe the best response I've ever gotten. I totally understand what you mean. I don't want to group all the time, but I do indeed like to group when I can find a good one.

In that regard, WoW and AO are where it's at.
