I'm really looking for a program that is great for cleaning up the registry, editing what starts at startup and that eliminates programs that are unnecessary and never used. I know how to use msconfig and all that, but sometimes it doesn't take everything off no matter how many times you uncheck it from the startup list [eg: quicktime]. Just looking for some of the best of the best reccommendations.

Getting rid of Quicktime can be done by going into Edit, Preferences, Quicktime Preferences - last check box.

I see Registry Mechanic plugged all the time on SoftPedia.

Do yourself a favour and download regclean.exe It's made by Microsoft but not supported by them. (Like all the tools found on their Windows resource kits) It's a little bit older, but works great with 2K/XP

A tool to monitor your startup settings is called "Startup Control Panel" which is a really nice (small single exe) tool which is self explanitory. I've used it to clean up lots of crap from user's PC's especially spyware crap.

EasyCleaner (by ToniArts) is also pretty good. I've been using that for a couple of years without a hitch on 98se, Me, 2000, and XP-HE.
