Best RPG's to begin with

The game that got me into RPG's was Paper Mario on N64. Although, I actually haven't played many other RPG's since. They just seem too time-consuming for me.

Do The Mario, stop trolling this thread with KoTOR.
I will not buy it, nor on PC, nor on Xbox!

For the other replies, thank you for the advise. Like I mentioned earlier, I will begin with Tales of Synphonia.

IAWTP

Probably the most overrated game this gen together with Metroid Prime IMO.

LMAO when did I troll, I didn’t say anything negative about any game :lol

Dark Cloud 2 was really quite good.

If you want something a bit different try Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter. It's got a Diablo thing going where the point ins't just to finish the game, but to battle over and over. There's almost no downtime in the dungeons.

Smart. Get Baten Kaitos as well. My favorite RPG this gen.

FFX!!

Shut up! GOTY 2003

And MakMan, you're following the same pattern that got me into RPGs. Before i was like "WTF! I have to wait my turn to attack? What a load of crap!" then sold my copy of FF7

Then Dreamcast came along. i played PSO, got used to the basic RPG elements, people then started suggesting Skies to me on PSO. So i bought it and was totally hooked. The game was a masterpiece, ranks up there as my favourite JRPG (you aint going to find one better atm)

Next step i went and bought the older FF games, FF8 and FF9, didnt really capture me like Skies did. I then bought FFx, thought it was good fun. Very easy to get into, battle system aint to hard to command either. Id would seriously reccomend buying FFX, the game might not be as deep as other RPGs, but its damn fun and doesnt overwhelm you with tons and tons of stretegy. Very Linear though

Anyway if you have a computer that is above a P2 233mhz you can easily play BG,BG2 IWD, IWD2 and Planescape. You could almost buy every one of those games for a price of a new PS2 or GC release.

Anyway recommending quality RPG’s is apparently trolling, but in all honesty you need to try one infinity engine game because if you enjoy that one title you will have 2000+ hours of gaming goodness for a tiny price.

What harm could be done in picking up a $10 copy of BG with TOTSC and free orchestrated soundtrack?

These games (especially Planescape) are amazing.

I'd take any of them over KOTOR.

I agree while KOTOR is a sensational game it’s hard to create such a huge living world in 3D, there are a few to many generic buildings and civilians for my liking.

For example in BG, IWD or PST the architecture of the buildings is superb, you know what the building is just by looking at it there are huge well crafted temples, Seedy taverns on boats, elitist mansion like taverns, then the landscape is littered with a variety of different types of house, shops etc.. you know when you are in a slum and you know when you are in an elitist district.

It’s depicted so beautifully and producers and atmosphere rarely seen in an a 2D game. Any serious hardcore gamer would be a fool not to try at least one of these games.

Yeah, I think it's really a 2d vs. 3d thing for me. Walking around the 3d world is nice & all, but really those 2d games are so astonishingly huge that things like graphics simply don't matter after a while, and you have to be more concerned with ease of identification. The 3d in KOTOR after a while just becomes something to slow you down.

Baldur's Gate 2 is just stunning as well. It's probably a better game overall than Planescape as far as things like mechanics go, but Planescape's astonishing uniqueness makes it feel like more of a classic to me.

I don't hate KOTOR at all, but I never finished it because my Xbox hard drive died. :-/

To be frank, Planescape: Torment is better than any of the console RPGs listed in this thread.

IAWTP. Thank god I didn't pass over it when it released just because it wasn't hot on the radar (Quake 3 and UT were hogging most of the holiday gaming hype).

I was going to say to try out Xenogears, but if you're still green at RPGs, I wouldn't jump into it. The story is literally epic, probably the most epic single game ever made. However, the fact it's so long may drive you away.

I'd suggest Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 6. Both are wonderful and both have amazing storylines.

mainstream and easiest to obtain is FF7. That was my first RPG, but unlike most people who played it, I don't consider it one of the BEST RPGs around.

A surprisingly fun yet fairly easy game, with a great story, to play would be the original Shadow Hearts as well.

I'd personally play older RPG's first. I'd recommend Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI (which is FF3 in the US).

Final Fantasy VII seems to be the most popular RPG ever, I think it would have the highest chance of being enjoyable.

I think this thread is being derailed, wasn't the original poster after a beginner's RPG, one to ease him into the genre?

There've only been a few suitable suggestions

Anyway, I'll recommend ToS for this gen, and if you can find a copy, go for Grandia for last gen :)

Grandia is a decent selection, although a bit too long perhaps.

Personally I think your best bet is to grab something that doesn't have much storyline or complex issues. You enjoyed Skies of Arcadia which relies of it's characters mostly throughout the entire game and doesn't bog you down with unnecessary bullshit.

As for Do The Mario constantly shoving Bioware's products in your face, just ignore him as any thread that pops up about an RPG or whatever you can bet your arse he will jump in with another Bioware game. The way I see it, if you love Japanese RPG's, you might not enjoy too many Western RPG's. Granted you could be different but I'd suggest if you aren't a Star Wars fanatic nor a huge PC gamer, then steer clear of Bioware's epics until you feel ready.

The easiest suggestion I can give you is to look back on past generations for simple RPGs that are fun. The only current RPGs that are similar in that respect are Skies of Arcadia and Tales of Symphonia. Gradually you'll want to play RPGs with more complexity etc, that's when you start playing all the rest.

Planescape
Icewind dale
Icewind dale 2

Are not bioware products they are black isle products,

anyway what’s wrong with recommending games that cost next to nothing and are classics?

If you have never played an RPG before what’s the point of starting with an expensive current gen title when there is a ton of quality budget titles out there?

Also is there any harm in picking up an infinity engine game for like $5-10 bucks? Probably a better choice then buying a $50 title,

I put in another vote for FF6.

Oh, and DoTheMario reminds me of that guy that works for Ubisoft... :lol

BTW best eastern RPG’s IMO are

Chrono Trigger
Lufia 2
FF 4
FF6
FF7
FF9

Honorable mentions

FFX (personally I don’t like the jap soap opera actors, still a great game)

Also I am surprised nobody had mention the Pokemon games, they would be great for an RPG newbie.

That’s if you have a GBA or a GB player?

If you want an eastern RPG go with FF6 first!

Tales of Symphonia is a great choice if your goal is to make yourself hate RPGs so much that you never play one again and save yourself a lot of time. Maybe you're thinking about learning another language or taking up cooking and you don't want the nagging feeling that maybe you should try World of Warcraft distracting you.

The only correct answer to this is Paper Mario 2. Great art direction, a cute and funny localization (Nintendo does this better than anyone), and the game is fun to play because the turn-based battles require some strategy and thinking but you also get bonuses for manual dexterity. PM2 is fairly linear so it's difficult to get stuck for very long but it's also challenging because you can't just use the same tactics through the whole game. Plus there are cool mini-games.

Paper Mario is a perfect introduction to RPGs because it is short (for an RPG), contains excellent in-game tutorials, and doesn't seem to be as complicated as it really is. You'll be introduced to many of the non-horrendously-long-cutscene features of modern JRPGs without being sucked into a 900-hour game that you never finish. By the time you're done with the game you'll be ready for something a bit more "serious", and for that you should see most of the other suggestions in this thread that don't begin with "Tales" and end with "of Symphonia".
