Best timing to call in sick

I caught the cold last Friday and have been sick all weekend. I went to work today but was miserable and couldn't do much work.

I'm going to call in sick tomorrow but I haven't really called in sick before. Which is the best way to call in sick in an office setting?

I was thinking of just calling later tonight where I'll leave a message. Or should i call tomorrow morning and talk to someone about it?

does your job have a sickline? If not, you probably should call HR, probably an hour or 2 before your supposed to go in tomorrow morning.

If you have a job where someone will need to cover for you I would call in sick as early as possible so that coverage can be found.

You and me both pal, although I actually called in despite having an important interview loop I needed to be on. Bloody frickin' hell. I swear, my throat feels like it's being raped by a bag of sandpaper-coated golf balls -- well, that is, when my guts aren't lubing it up with stomach acid and last night's "meal" of Swedish Fish.

Hopefully I don't give this crap to my daughter. Ugh!

Anyway, my call-in is always the same: "<boss>, I'm sick as hell and I'm not gonna make it in. Sorry, but I don't think you want me staggering around in a haze of Sudafed, and you don't want anyone else catching this crap. I know it's inconvenient, and I'll make up whatever work I need to when I get back. Sorry, and now I'm going to lay down in a pool of sweat and vomit and pray for the sweet, sweet mercy of over-the-counter medication to kick in. Toodles!"

If you look ill, and work isn't a 40 minute drive, then one option I used to use was to actually go in, but after 10-15 minutes to go visit the boss and explain that despite the effort I *really* wasn't well enough to be working, and needed to go home.

There wasn't a single time in 12 years of 9-5 life that this wasn't both effective and my sick record never became an issue, as it immediately undermines any thoughts of "he just can't be arsed" that may be lurking in your bosses mind, and you'll get a reputation for putting in effort beyond the call of duty just by turning up.

Of course YMMV, as always :)

I thought it was common lore that children's immune systems are nigh impenetrable.

This is the new hotness sick thread! I called off today because of this stupid fucking cold. Kept waking up in the middle of the night choking on snot and alien saliva. >:|

Theraflu for the win!

What Vennt said, too. I use that tactic a lot, and would have this time if I had been in any shape to drive without flooding my truck with chunks of yuck. It's sad that you hafta do this to prove that you're sick when you say yer sick, so thank your dishonest fucking coworkers who don't feel like earning the money the company pays them.

I called in sick last week.

I felt shitty when I woke up...which was around 7:10. I called in a few minutes later (my time starts at 8:00).

If you can leave a message, do that. But if you want to be sure that people know right away, I'd call-in 30 minutes early.

Only time I ever called in sick was the day after Halo 2 was released.

If I ever called in now, my boss would break my legs. :)

Yeah, bloody lamers that take a sicky to play Elite and other 8 bit classics under the pretenses of sickness, You wouldn't find me doing that to play Autoduel, or UO, or my spanking new Playstation, oh no sir-ey... ;)

Another tip is do not sheepily ask for sicktime, if you are well enough to consider the possibilty and buckle under pressure they'll smell it a mile away and may doubt your honesty, you tell them that you are too sick to make it to work, and if they then push the issue / talk you around then so-be-it. - "Probing" for a sicky during the morning call is a quick way of needing new employment options.

You'll be calling in when the Redskins tap that ass! :lol :lol

Hehe, I'm my own boss these days, but rather than it being the ideal that I dreamt of, of "cool, I can go home when I want to" the reality is "fuck, I hope I make it home before 3am, hmmm, might be nice to try and find sometime on say, the 24th of the month for a quick 10 minutes with Tetris". :lol

What's worse is that if I'm sick, Instead of calling in sick, I have to say "Fuck, todays is gonna be HARD, even if I am filling up the car with gallons of snot..." - It's either that or explain to the missus why I had to sell Matthew to a turk :P

I usually go to work sick just because I'm too lazy to call in. Not to mention I hate myself for lounging around when I could be doing it there and getting paid for it. I just do a really shitty job so it feels justified to me.

You should probably find out from your workplace what their procedures are, i.e. how much notice is required.

But the only tip I have for you is call in yourself, don’t get a partner/family member to do it. That is SO lame. Every time one of my staff call in sick and pull that, I just think “yeah right!” It is a dead giveaway for faking it.

Also, you can tell when someone is faking when they go over-the-top with details and information about their illness. A genuine sick person will call you and say “Hey, I am not well, I won’t be coming in today, sorry”. The faker will say “Hey, I’m not well, I think I ate something last night/had stomach cramps all night/had the worst diarrheal all night/etc, but I’m going to the doctor/hospital/band camp to dislodge that flute etc I think I should be right for tomorrow. Keep it simple.

Speaking as a professional sick-caller, the best way to do it is as Alyssa says. "I'm just not going to be able to make it in" or "I can't come into work today". For best sick voice, I try and call immediately after waking up, damn can I sound rough at that time, lol

I called in sick today... I tried to call in yesterday, and my boss begged me to come in to work..so I went.

but really if you don't know how to call in sick to your workplace you have some issues to work out

An office setting? I just send an email to my boss, then cancel any meetings I'm in, then set up my out of office assistant to notify everyone who emials that I'm sick and OOP. (I use Outlook.)

Viola. You're free.

Going into work f'd up on meds is great. I had kidney stones about 2 months back and was on vicodin the whole time, it was great, it made the meeting so much more enjoyable.

You motherfuckers caught my disease bwahahah.

I was sick last tuesday night and blowing chunks. I worked on tuesday 3-11, but felt like crap, and then drove home. Got home, threw up at midnight, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Give or twake a few minutes either way.

Finally at 6 I decided to email my supes to let them know I wasn't going in.

Talked with a supervisor of mine who had called in the day before due to being sick and he said he got the email and everything was taken care of. It was a pretty rough day from what I heard. Not quite worth being sick, but well, someone got in some shit I think. :p

I still feel like crap right now, but well, not nearly as bad as I did that night.
