Best way to collect all the pokemon?

So I want to collect all the pokemon and trade with myself to do it. I have a 2DS and a New 3DS is coming soon so that takes care of the 3DS generation games. Can you link DS games when using 3DS? Or is that something only a real DS can do? What is the best way to get the GBA games? Can DS lite's link GBA games? Or can only a real GBA do that? I understand some Pokemon were limited event Pokemon and I would probably try to get those through trading later on and not worry about it for now.

If you're just looking to collect all the pokemon, global trading is your best bet for regular pokemon.

For event pokemon you just have to be patient or hit up events. Nintendo is trickling a lot of the event pokemon out over the course of 2016, you've already missed out on Celebi and Mew though.

Yeah but I kinda want to catch them myself.

Pretty sure beyond mythicals who you need to get in an event or trading, every single pokemon is available between the 4 generation 6 games. That said, I'd recommend taking advantage of trading, because otherwise it'll take a lot, lot longer

Honestly, the best way is having a really good friend who also plays Mons.

Coordinate with whatever versions your have, always play the opposite of your partner.

Best way to play Pokemon IMO.

Yeah, between ORAS and XY you can technically (some are a pain in the ass) obtain every Pokemon you'll need to complete the dex excluding legends like Mew, Celebi, etc.

I did it myself and all I can say is it takes hard work and determination lol. It takes a long time but once you hit your stride it'll be easier.

I guess I didn't even consider this possible between all the different games. Does anything cool happen if you do?

Filling up the pokedex (barring mythicals) grants you an in game certificate, and as of recent games, a shiny charm that increases the chance of finding Shiny pokemon

The biggest pain are the Legendary Birds--Only one per playthrough in X/Y and the version exclusive legendaries in ORAS.

I've given up on collecting all of the Pokémon. I also remember what it was like when I collected all original 151 I'm red. I was so excited then I ended up just feeling empty and putting the game down like nothing again.

Well with Black 2/White 2, X+Y, and ORAS every pokémon should be obtainable in game. Granted you'll need 2 3DS', a pokébank sub, and six games but it's doable.

The event mythicals are actually available all year long this year. One each month via differing methods (Game Stop code or download via online mystery gift).
February was Mew, March is Celebi, I think April is Jirachi.

EDIT: wait is it possible to get Kyurem's gene splicer in XY/ORAS?

Okay but what if I wanted to do it my way and play all those old games again.

You'd need at least a DS to play the GBA games. Other than that you can play the DS games on a 3DS, it doesn't matter for linking.

EBay would be your best bet for buying the GBA games.

Mew Codes are on Ebay and I already have Y and one or the ORAS games I forgot which. So I can still get all the mythical.

Oh I guess they stopped giving out Celebi on the 24th.

Any Pokemon you catch in a GBA title can be transferred to Gen IV games (D/P/Pl and HG/SS) through a pretty cumbersome post-game minigame, where you get some special Pokeballs and explore a small patch of land for up to 6 transferred Pokemon a day. From there you'll have to play another minigame to transfer 6 Pokemon at a time over into the Gen V DS games (B/W/2), although you can do that as many times a day as you please. After that you can transfer your Pokemon to Pokebank which seems like it'll be the standard for transferring from gen to gen moving forward.

Yeah but can DS link GBA like an actual GBA can?

I went by generation. I had all four Gen VI games so it didn't take me that long. There were some I had to skip and come back to because I needed a certain Mirage Island in ORAS. Also just used some that I caught from Gen V because fuck DexNav in the water or in caves.

Everything short of Mythicals is available just in X, Y, OR, and AS. You won't even need to go back to DS games. I made a living Pokedex a while back off just those four games, and IIRC the most time consuming Pokemon is getting your third of Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, since you only get one per playthrough of X or Y. So in total, you'll need 5 playthroughs: OR, AS, X, Y, and then X or Y a second time. There might be one or two other Pokemon like that, but I don't remember specifics. Maybe Entei, Raikou, Suicune.

I'm certain that you don't need to go back to B&W2 or B&W, because I still haven't gotten around to playing them.

So I need a DS Lite, and 2 3DS basically? Play GBA Game > Transfers to Diamond/Pearl > Transfer to Black / White and then I have the pokebank.

That sounds pretty doable. So OR, AS, X, Y then X or Y again, buy a Mew code off Ebay and then figure out how to get Celebi.

Wouldn't you need a 6th, since you'll need one more ORAS playthrough to get the last hoenn starter?

I was doing this using a GBA Ruby, HG/SS, Black 2/White 2, X and AS but I think I might come up short on some of them still. I was up to around 520 or so when I got sidetracked and stopped.

Good catch. I traded for starters, so I forgot about them.

I should also point out that one of the key sources for some Pokemon is the friend safari in X & Y, which can be a real pain to find players for. I used reddit's /r/friendsafari to find everything, and it still looks pretty active, so keep that in mind.

I just completed a Pokedex about a month ago. I had Pokemon dating back to the GBA games in there. It was still a huge grind. You'll probably have more fun playing through B&W and maybe even HG/SS than playing the Battle Resort or whatever at the end of the 3DS games for the items you need for some evolutions, because that's just another grind within a grind. There's a bunch of Pokemon you need to trade while holding specific items which are only available by buying them with points in the 3DS games, but are more easily found in previous games. There's also a bunch of Pokemon, mostly from B&W, which are only available though these portals that appear in the ORAS overworld on some days. It's really stupid.
