BETHESDA SOFTWORKS OBTAINS STAR TREK LICENSE AND ANNOUNCES TWO GAMES

Legacy and Tactical Assault to be Released on Next-Gen Consoles, Handhelds, and PC

(Rockville, MD) January 24, 2006 ¾ Bethesda Softworks® today announced it has secured the rights from CBS Consumer Products to publish a series of Star Trek games on all gaming consoles, handhelds and PCs. Bethesda has two titles slated for release this year to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the epic series – Star Trek®: Legacy for Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PC, and Star Trek®: Tactical Assault for Nintendo DS™ and Sony PSP™ (PlayStation® Portable). Bethesda’s rights cover the entire Star Trek series and are exclusive to all consoles, handhelds, and the PC.

Star Trek: Legacy places you in the role of the Admiral of a task force of warships, which you control in small and large-scale battles. Test your strategic and tactical skills in real-time combat featuring authentic spaceships, full damage modeling, and spectacular visual effects. The storyline in Legacy spans the entire Star Trek Universe, including the Original Series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise eras. Star Trek: Legacy will be released on Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PC this September.

Taking advantage of next-generation consoles, Star Trek: Legacy features dynamic three-dimensional battlefields with graphically stunning space environments filled with fully realized nebulas, wormholes, planets, and stars. With full multiplayer support, you will be able to choose from small-scale engagements to all-out war involving multiple star systems in addition to tracking stats and player rankings. Star Trek: Legacy is being developed at the studios of Mad Doc Software, creators of the highly successful and critically acclaimed Star Trek Armada II.

“Being able to work with the entire universe of this beloved series is an incredibly exciting opportunity for us,” said Todd Vaughn, vice president of development for Bethesda Softworks. “We have some great ideas about where we want to go with this license and having the exclusive right to develop and publish Star Trek games across all platforms ensures that every Star Trek game will be a quality game worthy of its name.”

Star Trek®: Tactical Assault, in development for handheld gaming systems, features real-time spaceship combat from the universe of the original Star Trek series. With a wide array of authentic Star Trek races, ships, and weaponry, you can engage in single-player battle through either the Federation or Klingon campaigns or in head-to-head wireless multiplayer combat. Star Trek: Tactical Assault is being developed in the studios of Quicksilver Software, creators of the highly popular Star Trek: Starfleet Command.

Both the Federation and Klingon campaign modes feature real-time combat with branching missions and multiple outcomes. With a multitude of paths to choose from, you will decide the ultimate outcome of your campaign. Wireless multiplayer mode allows you to test your skills and tactical maneuvers against those of your friends. Successful gameplay relies on strategic movement and effective use of a ship’s weapons and shields. Star Trek: Tactical Assault is slated for release on Nintendo DS™ and PSP™ this September.

I assume Bethseda by virtue gain the rights to the franchise thanks in part to the squabble between Viacom and Activision.

Anyhow, its cool and all that Bethseda got the right exclusively, though I'm not a geek/nerd to care. I do love the original series though :)

Xbox 360 Star Trek game looks like a Xbox game.
PSP Star Trek game looks like a DS game.

Makes you wonder what the DS version will look like. :(

Those are PSP screens.

I personally think the Legacy screens look great. There really isn't much you can do with space.

Sigh.. why can't they make GOOD star trek games (Bridge Commander ruled, so I guess if this is more like that rather than Starfleet Command series it's all good)... but the best Star Trek games have ALWAYS been the adventure games. 25th Anniversary, Judgement Rights, Unity... all fucking good. I want a revial of the ST adventure games damn it!

The Legacy shots do look alright, but I can't help but feel the Ambassador Class starship has blurry details; the saucer's window treatment looks like it's been smeared in Vaseline back at Starbase. And I'd imagine this is a relatively early shot if its name and registry are missing off the top side of its saucer. It's good, though, that all the starships look largely spot-on besides this (I <3 the Excelsior Class ship right behind it); I hope good things out of this whenever it releases.

"Ok Bethesda, but what's up with the Fallout license ???"

Bethesda's not developing these games (the Star Trek games). So they very well could be in the preliminary stages of developing FO (in-house).

Cool I suspose, but I also want another ST adventure game, one based on Enterprise would rule! Though I would also wanna see one in the post DS9 universe.

Mine. Bethesda is going to have a lot of my cash this year.

And the entire world of Oblivion is merely an elaborate Holodeck simulation.

Oh yeah. Some of the pictures in here make it look better, though I'm not sure how much better you can make space look.

I suppose it just depends on how the game's presentation stacks up.

Star Trek ? Does the story actually get any good ? To be honest i have never seen much star trek new or old, it just looks so boring ?

Another strategy game on DS FTW!

EDIT: Oh, wait. The strategy game is on 360/PC. That's stupid. The DS has a touch screen, it's perfect for strategy games... OTOH, it has shitty 3D so why would you put a 3D combat game on the system? The Star Trek license's legacy of quality lives on!

And those have got to be DS screens. Unless they're building the DS version first and porting to the PSP, in which case, PSP owners am cry.

Who are you talking to ?

You, of course. But in general, I hate that kind of post.

If something doesn't interest you, that's one thing. You probably should have stayed out of the thread, but that's another issue entirely.

But it seems as though you're asking for permission to hate it, and of course those who already didn't dig the idea will rush to your defense. In other words, it's much more constructive to say nothing in your case. Or, if you have a comment related to the game itself and not the series (positive or negative), let that be what you post.

My distaste for related comments usually applies to art or developers. (i.e. I hate this art so the game sucks, or I can't stand the developer)

I hate "This looks so boring make me love it please." posts. Some people are so presumptuous.

Since these are screenshots I can comment on them, DEAL WITH IT.

How about this looks really, really bad compared to say X-3?

Oh, wait, you've never actually seen X-3 cause it's a PC exclusive so you act like it doesn't exist. Typical you.

Screens are underwhelming to say the least, but my hope is there.

In Deep Space Nine and The Next Generation: Yes, it gets very good. I hope they can capture the depth of DS9 in this games, although I highly doubt it ^^. If those screens are PSP screens, I hope, it's just a port of the DS game, so that the DS version isn't looking like a mediocre GB Color game.

You got me all wrong. I have never seen an episode/movie of star trek. I was always a star wars kid. I am sorry that when i was a kid i thought star trek was boring and in turn shaped my opinion of it today.

I cannot wait until September for this game... I love almost all Star Trek movies/TV, the graphics look great.

The ships look really detailed and hopefully they get some of the real actors for voice-over work.

I'll keep an eye on both these titles. A tactical space combat game, like Starship Battles, would be hot, especially for the PSP, and with online play. But the combat should feel more like a capital ship battle, and not like you're flying a fighter. Big, slow, powerful ships, with lots of capablities, slugging it out in a tactical engagement like in Wrath of Kahn.

Oh, and make it in 3D too. None of that combat on a 2D plane. Kahn thought in two dimensions, but that God Amongst Men, James T. Kirk, knew how to use all three dimensions. :D
