Binary Domain JP Story Trailer (voice acting)

Looks cool. What kind of game is this? Like Vanquish?

It's a tps, doesn't seems anywhere near as fast as Vanquish. Squad mates play an integral role in the game from what I've read, big emphasis on AI for both enemies and your squad.

Obviously very story driven and it's made by the Yakuza team which knows how to make characters you end up caring about. Can't wait for this to come out!

"We call them...Hollow Children."

I call them Terminators.

Wow, shit. I had already written this off after the last trailer, but this looks kind of awesome.

Go Nagoshi.

Wow. That was surprisingly bad ass. The surprisingly bit makes me sad though.

The CIA head guy looks like a zombie.

I don't know, if Yakuza of the End's awkward shooting mechanics are any indication I am not so sure I want a straight up shooter from this team. Then again since '97 I've tended to not want a straight up shooter ever, from anyone.

The gun mechanics in this game are completely different compared to Yakuza of the End. Here's a video of it from E3

It looks pretty solid to me.

I played Binary Domain at E3 and the shooting mechanics are almost perfect. It basically follows the RE4/Gears formula of shooting but it's responsive and isn't a complete mess like it was in Yakuza: Of the End.

Game-play wise, does this game offer anything new? Or is this just a Japanese attempt at the third-person shooter genre.

I would like to add that Vanquish is my favourite shooter this gen but that's also because it offered something new game-play wise, namely the pace and emphasis on mobility.

While visually it's not the most appealing thing ever (guess Japan is late to the "everything looks like plastic" fun we had earlier this generation with western games), it looked like it could be fun.

Heh, edited exactly like Ryu ga Gotoku trailer :P

Still very much looking forward to the game.

Hmmm, sort of I guess.

After the trailer sort of seemed to end(before they start showing people dying or w/e) and they showed a black screen with white text I was kind of expecting them to show the team singing karaoke.

Well on the surface I think it's pretty much a Japanese attempt at doing the 3rd person shooter. The team at Sega Japan is doing some cool stuff with the A.I teammates that accompany the main character during battle and how they won't follow certain commands if you don't offer some support. So if I went into battle and told my squad to head on and engage the enemy while I just did nothing and they get their asses handed to them then in the future they may not follow my commands.

So there's this whole relationship dynamic which may not be a big mechanic on the surface since the core action consists of blasting up robots. Other than that the action is pretty straight forward but there is come cool procedural damage for the enemies and the boss battles all have a specific action/routine that needs to be performed which thankfully doesn't involve shooting the giant glowing red spot.

My thoughts exactly.

now to the big question ... is this thing one of your squad members? :O

The lip sync is better than what we see in ~90% of current gen games though.

Looks OK, the jury is out on this one.

I thought the lip-synching was terrible. The lips move with a lot of animation surely, but it doesn't really sync with the audio. :P

You buy games because of their lip sync? Also, the lip sync might be good (though it isn't, really), but the voices themselves are quite bad..

Now how did you reach that conclusion?

The timing of the lip sync might be a little off, but it's still better than what we see in the majority of games. With just a little adjustment, it'll be awesome.

Yeah, okay, the gameplay looks pretty standard fare third person cover based shooter to me. Unfortunately that sort of stuff does nothing for me. I have hoped it would at least have a arcade like pacing, some unique twists on gameplay and exciting boss battles to win me over like Vanquish, but that boss robot looked like just a slow walking bullet sponge.

Anyway, we'll see wither Nagoshi and team do not have something up their sleeve. If not then maybe this title will find a bigger audience in the west than Vanquish did because it looks a lot more conservative in design, but that is the sort of stuff that I cannot get excited about at all.

Cover based shooters like Gears offer just about the most boring gameplay I can imagine outside of a FPS or a generic Dragon Quest template 100 hour+ RPG.

You would argue Vanquish is not a lot more hectic of pace than Gears or this? You never stand still in Vanquish, always sliding about and jump kicking robots. And the last boss, phew, never had a more fast paced gameplay in a game featuring guns in this generation.

Anywaste, that was my takeaway from Vanquish and the footage of Binary Domain.

Not 100% appealing to me but it looks interesting. I'll keep an eye on this to see how it will turn out.

I have had my eye on this for awhile now and grow more interested every time I see it. I am digging the whole Japanese I Robot/Terminator vibe. Should be pretty slick.

"Arcade-like pacing" is the wrong term for Vanquish, is all. Hectic, sure, less fluff than Gears, sure, but a game with "arcade pacing" is a 25 minute cutscene-free a-few-strikes-and-you're-out kind of game. Nothing to do with how unrealistic the stuff on the screen is. And ultimately, Vanquish has way more in common with a modern console game than any arcade game.

Well, there is the problem then. My definition of what makes a game arcady is very different from yours. I mean it more in the vague sense of it having aesthetics that are evocative of what I associate with the arcade experience. That is to say things move fast, everything shakes and explodes making the screen be very busy with a lot of detail and not paying attention will get you killed. It also has a lot to do with how articulately and abundantly things animate for an example. I am playing Sin and Punishment 2 right now and that has the same arcade feel to it.

I do not mean arcady as in it uses arcade game design, that is a very different beast which is very rarely seen on consoles, especially these days.
