Damn..losing the NFL license could be the best thing that ever happened to this franchise! I guess I'm a little behind, but I just found out about this the other day, and upon seeing some screens I immediately thought "Playmakers". Sure enough a little delving into the previews reveals that in fact the creator of the show is directly involved with the scripting of the game.
The concept is just fantastic IMO!! I love the idea of the prescripted teams with backstories, rivalries etc. With the way its set up you could conceivably update the series every year with many of the players/coaches/characters returning for a new "season", not unlike a TV show. Maybe even set it up so that last year's save file dictates how the preseason shapes up in the new years edition (ie who won the title, player awards, injuries etc).
The graphics..animation in particular, look great although I'm not expecting anything too groundbreaking in terms of gameplay. Some old school Blitz '99 action with a few tweaks would be enough for me when coupled with the new trappings.
Given that I'm not likely to cop Madden until it comes out for X360, this game sounds like a fantastic means of satisfying my football fix in the meantime. That way I don't end up buying the same game twice, but don't feel left out when everyone is getting their gridiron on. Who else is checking for this come October??
