Blood Omen : Legacy of Kain

So I had a chance to get the Soul Reaver Remaster for 4€ on Steam + Bloodlines 2 got me in the mood, but before I launched it I made a mistake or reading that you need to play Blood Omen to get a lot of things right.

Key site, 2.5€, GOG key bought.

I have to say as someone that plays 100% on the Steam Deck - getting this to run was an absolute bitch, the controls are incredibly unintuitive and the GOG version by default is gimped at 30 FPS.

Fortunately I am very stubborn and have 30 years+ of experience of tinkering with shit. So after 1-2 hours of Perplexity + Reddit research I got it to play at 60 FPS with remastered movies and controller support aka Verok's patch.

I am shocked at how good this game is, holy fuck.

Yep, the acting and story for this game is top notch. Ignore the graphics and go for the story and atmosphere. There was a fan based mod that was in the works using Unreal engine. They even had a demo and was pretty freaking sweet, but the main guy fell off the face of the earth. So, no further development had progressed.

No game matches the atmosphere of this one. It's so bleak and depressing.
I've only completed it maybe 3 times total in my life but inbetween those playtbroughs I regularly think of the game, its characters and such.
As you get to the end, even Kain has seen enough.

It's why evidence points to the 'good' ending was going to be canon until Silicon Knights lost the IP.

Game gets pretty repetitive, but still worth it. Among my first batch of PS1 game..... Hey Victus! Or whatever he'd yell.

I remember an old game mag or the game box saying it had 100,000 screens of gaming. LOL. I dont think it even has 1,000.

hmm, I thought I had that on steam, but didn't. Getting it on gog. Such a good game, played it years ago on dos pc. Don't have the disks anymore.

One of my favorite PS1 games. Coming from the 16-bit era where it was all chip tunes and text, hearing well acted full audio with a solid story was a real leap forward. And the game play was great on top of that.

Started playing the other night in prep for the Soul Reaver remasters. Atmosphere is on another level and I missed when games like this and the first God of Wars were unashamedly very raw and brutal and took their own material seriously. If they tried to make this today zoomers would say it's cringe.

This so much. I miss the more serious era aswell. Alot of devs are just cowards now and are too afraid of being called cringe or try hard by there zoomillenial peers. Sad :(

My older brother bought this from The Warehouse blindly one day. I think he got it alongside with the original Tomb Raider.

We had a blast!

Incredible game. At least from a presentational, and storytelling front.

A lot of people remember games like MGS1 have somewhat pioneering voice acting for the time, but for me it was Blood Omen, and Lucas Arts point & clock games that came years prior.

Sure, the gameplay can leave a lot to be desired, but boy does it make up for that in storytelling and voice acting. I'm glad I got to experience this game before the first Soul Reaver. It made me appreciate the series a whole lot more.

It is one of the best games I have ever played in my entire life. I would say that about the whole series.

The whole lore of these games was incredible.

There was a rumor long ago of a Soul Reaver 3 after Defiance due to the unanswered questions about Raziel.

It had 100,000 screens of loading on the Playstation.

Super climatic and gorgeous tho :)

Do you mind sharing a bit more detailed guide on how you got it to run better on Steam Deck please?

Grab a chair and a drink, this will take a while. All steps were done on the Steam Deck, maybe there are other ways I don't know of.

1. Buy Blood Omen on GOG.
2. Grab Heroic Launcher from Discovery store, link your GOG account, install Blood Omen.
3. Grab Verlok's patch, I used the most recent version 1.75 full version: https://www.moddb.com/mods/veroks-gl-wrapper-patch
4. Extract the archive
5. Rename all the folders in the extracted archive keeping only the first letter capital, rename all files replacing all capital letters: KAIN folder ----> Kain ; DDRAW.DLL ---> ddraw.dll ; without this the folders and files will be copied and not overwritten
6. Move / Copy the above to the game folder, by default I think it's : /home/deck/Games/Heroic/Legacy of Kain Blood Omen/ , overwrite all if prompted

7. In the game options IN THE HEROIC LAUNCHER, click on WINECFG (at the bottom) and you will get a new window with several tabs. On the default tab, click on "add new app" and search for the game executable (Kain.exe)
8. Once added, SELECT THE KAIN.EXE and on the "Libraries" tab write "ddraw" and add it (accept the disclaimer). Make sure it shows "native then built in" next to it (if it doesn't, change it with the "edit" button). Accept everything, close the WINECFG window and close the Heroic game options.
9. Add an executable as a non-Steam game

Now if you want to check if it is working you should be getting the following:
1. Launching the game from Heroic gives you a setup window
2. Launching the game from Desktop as a non-Steam one gives you an error memory_could_not_be_loaded
3. Launching the game from Game mode as a non-Steam one doesn't have the patch applied and the startup movies are choppy

10. Check in Heroic in the game's settings what is the game Wine prefix, for me it was /home/deck/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/Legacy of Kain Blood Omen
11. In your non-Steam icon go to Settings, and put this as launch command: STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH="/home/deck/Games/Heroic/Prefixes/Legacy of Kain Blood Omen" %command% or whatever your Wine path is. MAKE SURE YOU TYPE EXACTLY LIKE THAT, I had a space between first " and /, it didn't work
12. Make sure both in the settings for the game inside the Heroic Launcher and in the non-Steam icon you have the same Proton forced, for me it works with GE-Proton-9-13

Thanks :). I had to follow similar instructions for getting Deadly Premonition to work too hehe. Did you try with any of the "official" Proton releases too?

I was tempted to get it but fuck doing all that 😄

Even though it's technically very dated now the story holds up because it was written by two of the best in industry, Amy Hennig (Uncharted) and Denis Dyack (Too Human and Eternal Darkness), with Amy being the design/story director. Loved it when I played back in '96 and cool to see it still getting love all these years later.

I can still hear "VAE VECTUS VAE VECTUS VAE VECTUS" in my head from when my roommate was playing this in college back in the day.

Had this on ps one and never finished it.
Just got lost and gave up.
Always loved the atmosphere though, probably give it another shot.
