As the title says, im after some board game suggestions and thought of you good people. Theres plenty out there but the problem is its just me and my wife so we need something thats good for just 2 people realy. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks bruvs.

Settlers of Catan is one of my absolute favourites and probably an easy game to start with. But I'm not entirely sure about 2-player sessions. I think we were 3 at the very least.

Maybe you can check on Facebook if there's some local groups playing. I know my local library has some people having sessions there.

I'd avoid Monopoly with your loved one though. 😄

Me and my friends have played Scythe a bunch. We tend to play it with about 4 or 5 of us but you can play it 2 player. It's got great art set in an alternate 1920s Europe with diesel powered mechs. It looks pretty complex but once you're playing it's not too bad since you have a character board that keeps you straight about what you can do. It's a bit on the pricey end because of all of the different pieces involved.

But if that's not your wife's style or you're looking for something more specifically for two people then I've heard good things about Kelp. In it one player plays as a shark and the other plays as an octopus. It's asymmetrical with the shark having a more directly aggressive play style, whereas the octopus is more about cunning. I've not played it but I've heard good things about it.

It's impossible to answer this - there are hundreds of high quality board games that play great with 2 players, we need more info:

1. Amerithrash or Eurojank aka to you want a great theme and easy mechanics (Amerithrash) or batshit complicated mechanics and LOL theme (Eurojank) e.g. this wooden cube is a mythical dragon?
2. Any theme you want - LotR? GoT? Warhammer?
3. Game length? Setup time? Replayability?

Have you tried Azul? I can't recommend it highly enough. Bought it a few years ago, after it won a bunch of GOTY awards, and it has been a favourite ever since.

It's good for two players, although it scales up nicely to four. A round doesn't take very long, and there are sneaky strategies like sacrificing a modest score for yourself purely to force your opponent to take a big loss. Could potentially lead to arguments / divorce.

Sorry, I should of gave more info. We would go for something more easy going and shorter up to around an hour or so.

Were not big into boardgames but I suggested it the other day as the weather is shit and dark and to make a change from tv stuff.

Thanks for the other suggestions so far aswell, I like the look of Kelp, The game of life and Battleships I forgot all about, I use to play that with my brother.

In my experience very few 3+ player games can be adapted to 2 players, it's usually running a bot somehow. Fine for folks who are REALLY into the game, but not as the primary way to play, IMHO. It's been a while since I've dipped my toes in this area (other than wargames), but here are some oldie but evergreen goodies, I think most are still in print.

I like Lost Cities

there are a lot of games in this category, this couple shows off a lot of them

of course if competitive head to head games aren't your forte, there are COUNTLESS co-ops that pit the players against the game itself.

I find co-op games to be a bit hit or miss, as its a lot harder to balance the game. You tend to just crush it, which is a bit unsatisfying, or you get demolished by the game, which is a be dehumanizing and frustrating. Those "won by a single last dice roll" moments are harder to come by. But co-ops offer a lot of thematic variety and you are not left with one player getting mad at the other (as much). Of course co-op games are really just solitaire games with added work, so you gotta be wary of one player taking over and making decisions for the others.

Me and my wife played a lot of 7 Wonders: Duel. If you like it you can then move to 7 Wonders or Architects. Also if you want an "experience" try Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 - it's a board game and you play through a story over multiple sessions.

Catan
Unstable Unicorns (way better than it has any right to be)
Tsuro (quick, easy to pick up, lots of stratagy / trolling )
Takenoko
Carcassone
Ticket to Ride

Wife and i play these routinely. There are some other great games but they work better with four or more.

Dead of Winter
Zombiecide
Mexican Train
Epic Spell Wars
Munchkins

Unstable Unicorns is good as one you can play a quick round of while waiting for someone to turn up or spend the night playing a bunch in a row.

Hi OP - my wife and I were in a similar situation like 7-8 years ago and got into Board Games as our joint hobby. We had an amazing board game cafe within walking distance which made for a super fun monthly "date night". If you have this option nearby I strongly recommend you look into it if your wife likes going out. If you are both homebodies though then no need.

Anyway, as for game recommendations, here is my list in the order you should play it. Increasingly complexity as you become more familiar with board games and determine you want more challenge.

1) Pandemic (co-op) - I think enough time has past that this can actually be fun again. During 2020-2021 lockdowns it was too on the nose to play. I view this to be the gateway drug co-op board game.
2) Codenames Duet (co-op) - if the pandemic theme is still 'too soon', this one is equally fun but not nearly as serious.
3) 7 Wonders Duel (versus, lightly competitive) - once you guys determine you like co-op games, try a couple versus games. 7 Wonders is one of the best games in general, and this two-player version is great.
4) Dominion (versus, more competitive deckbuilder) - worth trying to see if deckbuilders are your thing, because that opens a whole new world of tabletop games. You'll figure it out pretty quick if it's not.

And from there if you progress to inviting friends over to play, you can go with Settlers of Catan, 7 Wonders (normal version), Ticket to Ride, or Skull as never-fail options. I personally like Skull the best but it's not as deep as the others so it depends on what you're looking for.

Articulate

Pointless
Based on a ultra nerdy UK game show. Kinda like the opposite of Family Fortunes, where the least popular correct answer is the goal.

Both are pretty simple, yet nerdy, and you can chill and just read/answer the questions without keeping score if you want.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, appreciate it, we will have a look through them properly and decide on a few. I will reply with what we go with once we have chosen.
