Bob Iger Reducing Spending and Creation On Star Wars / Marvel Content

Getting exclusive new content on Disney+ is not what I was wanting. Being able to go back into Disney’s entire catalogue through an on demand service is what I wanted. There are still several shows they need to go back and get. Sure some of it is obscure, like Herman’s Head and Muppets Tonight, but I want to be able to see all the old stuff and less of the new stuff…all without the fear of delisting and losing content.

I don't think spending and oversaturation has necessarily been the problem, at least not for me personally. It's the abysmal writing, and the void that's been left from the characters that people actually liked with no good ones to replace them. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 showed me that I wasn't really "done" with Marvel movies, but that I missed ones that had characters I gave a shit about, and the good writing to back them up.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
I stopped my Disney+ subscription because of the disappointing Marvel and Star Wars content. Iger's solution is not to improve the quality of these series but to scrap them altogether. That policy is not going to attract many new subscribers. The opposite will happen.

Less Marvel content is good. A bit disappointed about Star Wars but yeah there is too much shit coming out. If they go back to making a movie every few years I'll be happy with that. Maybe a new trilogy or saga.

Well, he's not wrong that spamming crappy content is a horrible strategy. But releasing crappy content at more paced intervals is only a small marginal improvement.

If it didn't suck, I would beg them to deliver as fast as possible and actually have a Disney+ subscription.

Edit: They already did this once when they announced that they would slow down the movie releases. Again there, the issue was not too many movies, it was the aggression with which those movies destroyed the brand. True, had they not spammed them so fast, death would have been slower. Still not getting at the real problem.

I didn't realize until now, Obi-Wan Kenobi was nominated for five Emmy's??? lol

Too late. I grew up on Star Wars and it was magical to me. I also have children in the target demo for Disney produce and no one in my house gives a shit anymore (Marvel/SW). Leave it to Disney to blame the fans though, that's really been paying off for them.

The star wars bit was never true. MCU Phase 4 is the one with issues due to Disney+ demanding for more content.

If they fix that issue, the MCU has a brighter future than before.

They can't rely on their IPs anymore because they sorta ran them to the ground, hopefully they can bring new ideas an interesting shows.

I'll tell my grandchildren about the good old Disney "We don't have to worry about quality control if we don't include any quality to start with," of my youth.

Keep your MFing corporate & diversity committees out of the creative process!
Align your base values with your core audience and fire leaderships who violate those values.
Stop with your screwball investor enforced pontification, finance your own productions.

There is a weird groupthink going on. If someone criticizes anything about modern Star Wars on Facebook, they are harassed and told to leave because they "aren't a real Star Wars fan" and it's "not a place to complain". It's not that everyone loves Disney Star Wars, it's that your not allowed to think anything else, and negative opinions tend to be transformed into the fans fault and harassed off the stage. I see it right now with the new Ahsoka trailer.

With this news, it becomes apparent that all the people defending Star Wars apparently are not good enough fans to support the brand. A vocal minority of warriors who most likely were never "real fans" to begin with haven't made them enough money. Since they pivoted entirely from movies to streaming shows, they were able to mask the true extent and timing of the damage.

Marvel on the other hand, was actually legitimately good at one point before just suffering from fatigue and exhaustion. I think it was pretty obvious that they needed a pause after Endgame. But if something is bringing in cash, Disney literally does not know how to stop it. Their only way is to squeeze it until it fails. It's causing massive damage to their IP. If Nintendo were Disney, there would be a new big Zelda game every year. They would get too samey, quality would suffer, and we would all stop being hyped over it. And they would blame us.

Too little too late imo. Their IPs have been tarnished. Disney's biggest demographic are families but they have done everything they can alienating them in pursuit of virtue signaling and forced political messaging. The problem lies beyond SW and Marvel. It's in Pixar as well as the parks. All this were under Iger's watch, yet somehow they extended his contract wtf lol.

The Disney Star Wars and Marvel slates remind me of that old joke from Spaceballs - Spaceballs 2 : the Search for More Money.

Was funny back then, but downright hilarious and scary how true it is now under the Disney banner.

The thing about woke is it forces you to be for or against it. Neutrality is impossible by definition, because silence is violence. So for Star Wars to drop the the forced political messaging puts them in an intolerable position, “You are using your power and privilege NOT to fight oppression, which means you support the status quo, which is oppression.”

So their options are anti-woke, which they won’t do, or staying woke, which they will, meaning they will stand in the path of fire, like Rose Tico, until destruction takes them.

Some have chosen to endure in the name of actually making money, but Disney went in too deep. They did make back their investment, but by burning through the value of the brand. I mean the position is pretty intolerable, but more intolerable than financial failure? It's a strong motivator.

I also think their content is terrible beyond even which being woke mandates, but I guess it's a side effect of control/hiring by committee rather than by qualification.

I was told to legitimately end my life over enjoying The Last Jedi. Like, as in not some attempt at a dark joke, the person specified they honestly hoped I would kill myself “if your life is so empty you need to delude yourself into thinking this new SW movie is good”. Along with being called not a “true fan” by a few dozen people (a few of them from this site) and also told by a few “you can enjoy it but you’re not allowed to say it’s actually good” (also one of these was from this site).

Trust me, the toxicity is definitely not solely on the side of those who enjoyed the films. Mark Hammil wouldn’t have had to tell people to leave Jake Lloyd the fuck alone if it were one-sided, and lo and behold those people didn’t give a shit and Jake (and Ahmed Best) suffered for it. This was well before Disney, so any claims that Disney manufactured all the death threats, harassment, etc. towards the ST cast don’t line up with how certain people in the SW fandom behave. There are shitheads on both sides, it’s disrespectful to those who have been harassed by said shitheads to claim otherwise.

Like lots of people already said, they need to clean house and do some serious restructuring. They lost / or are loosing their core chasing every hot topic rabbit. I can’t remember the last time I watched and liked any thing new out of the mouse house. Maybe it was Infinity War….

The problem is, the quality is usually crap. Take the two shows I listed as examples. The only real sources for them are on YouTube, uploaded from VHS tapes so they look pretty rough. When Disney releases old shows on Disney+ they use the original sources. The Original Muppet Show looks awesome compared to the bootleg stuff.

Blowing this up on a 65 inch screen is headache inducing:

All it would take is one good Quality movie in the Star Wars world and everyone would be back in. I also say if they got away from the Skywalker era, and went to a different time period and made a great film, people would be good.

Same with Marvel, slow it down, make Quality.

They need to completely kill their TV department. I am sorry but this diluting of IPs is what has caused this mess. Star Wars needs to be an event movie. The entire country should know there is a star wars movie coming out that weekend. Same goes for Marvel stuff. No offense to Mandalorian and Andor, but they should've been movies. Tony Gilroy and Jon Favaro are fantastic big movie directors, they should not be relegated to TV. Disney and Marvel have a Yes Man director problem but when they do get great directors like Tony Gilroy they have them make a tv show. Like come on.

Anyway, this is a great move, but they need to completely stop development of their tv IPs. Go back to 1 marvel movie a year. If not completely pause it for a couple of years and build anticipation for the next avengers movie. Hell, they shouldve taken a 2-3 years break after Avengers End Game. I cant believe they kept going with Spiderman, Thor, Black Panther, Guardians and Ant Man like nothing happened. Dude, give it a rest.
