SANTA MONICA, Calif., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lions Gate Films, the motion picture acquisition, production and distribution arm of Lions Gate Entertainment (NYSE: LGF - News; TSX: LGF - News), has picked up North American rights to ALONE IN THE DARK, the feature film adaptation of the hugely popular Sega video game. Directed and produced by Uwe Boll and written by Elan Mastai, Michael Roesch and Peter Scheerer, Lions Gate plans a nationwide January 28th release.
"ALONE IN THE DARK is a perfect addition to our slate of horror/sci-fi genre films on the pulse of popular culture," said Tom Ortenberg, President of Lions Gate Films Releasing. "Uwe Boll has taken a game with a voracious following and turned it into a film which completely stands on its own," he added.
The deal was negotiated for Lions Gate by Peter Block, Lions Gate Films President of Acquisitions, Television and Co-Productions, Jason Constantine, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions, Wendy Jaffe, Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs and Ortenberg with Peter Safran, President of Brillstein-Grey, Uwe Boll and Karyn Edwards & Shawn Williamson of Bright Light Pictures on behalf of the filmmaker.
"I'm really happy that Lions Gate is releasing ALONE IN THE DARK. The game has millions of fans worldwide and our movie turns out as very intelligent supernatural thriller with great actors and creatures," stated director and producer Boll.
In ALONE IN THE DARK, Edward Carnby (Slater), detective of the paranormal, unexplained and supernatural, investigates the recent, mysterious death of a friend with clues leading to "Shadow Island," that brings him face to face with bizarre horrors that prove both psychologically disturbing and lethal, as he discovers that evil demons worshiped by an ancient culture called the Abskani are planning on coming back to life in the 21st century to once again take over the world.
