Book Suggestions

I need to get something for my older brother for Christmas, and I am running out on ideas. I know he likes reading, and I know one of his favorite authors is Haruki Murakami. I know several of you guys also dig Murakami's stuff, so hopefully you can give me some suggestions for books he'd like.

I am pretty sure he has read most of the Murakami books, except maybe Dance Dance Dance. Any suggestions for authors like Murakami, or authors a Murakami-fan might like would be great.

The other author I know he likes is Tom Robbins, but same deal with Murakami...he has probably read all of his books.

Thanks for the help

I'm looking for something with nice poetic language but something new. I have always liked stories that are poetic and so romantically describe things and sound pleasing to the ear when spoken, but unfortunately it seems the style was dropped around 500 years ago. Poetry is nice, but why doesn't anyone beautifully word their stories anymore?

Great suggestion Mike

As for the question...we need more details, perhaps a particular genre?

However, if he likes that style then perhaps "Across the Nightengale Floor"?
Tonnes of good stuff if you know where to look. And why a book? Get him a film...generally easier to buy!

And so it was that humanity collapsed...

Hey, Dice... the most poetic writer I can think of is John Cowper Powys, an Englishman who wrote several books in the early 20th century. I read one of his books this summer. It's called "Wolf Solent", and has the finest use of English I've seen in a long time. It's not for everyone... long, undramatic, and with most of its focus on individual experiences of nature, relations with other people, and so on. The language is awesome, though! His descriptions of nature, especially, are second to none.

Has he read the latest Murakami, "Kafka on the Shore"?

BTW: Something I can really suggest is "The Illuminatus Trilogy!" by Shea/Wilson. Much better than the Dan Brown stuff.

Illuminatus! is pershaps one of the most wonderful books I have ever read. The combination of occultism, anarchism, and outright wierdness carries the reader through the most bizzare conspiracy theory ever dreamt of. This book will make you laugh, rage, and probably cause you to become a bit paranoid.

The story, or stories, hinge around a search for the truth about the Illuminati, a worldwide conspiracy that has apparently existed for centuries. Wilson complied a great deal of information, as well as tid bits from letters sent to him by crazies when he was working as the letters editor at Playboy magazine. The result is a book that leaves you wondering where fact ends and satire begins. That is, of course, the point. Wilson is out to blow your mind.

Professional cynics, who delight in nay-saying the creativity of others without producing anything of their own as an alternative, will find the book sentimental and a bit silly. For those with truly open minds, however, the Illuminatus Trilogy will be a book to read many times over. There is enough subtlety to keep you as busy as a thorough reading of Finnegan's Wake. The hidden messages and allusions seem to multiply each time you read.
