Latin Fury! weigh-in controversy
By Flattop
The card is titled Latin Fury! and Sam Garcia - the trainer of Jose Celaya - was full of fury about how Fridays weigh-in was handled. It was a spectacle! They walked us up to a stage and Jose Sulaiman (President of the WBC) said, The stage is a bit shaky, so we are going allow 300 grams (almost 10 ounces) over the limit (154-pounds). I said No! to Sulaiman but we were told to step on the scale before I could say anything more. They put the marker on the 154 pound mark and it (the beam) started to dip down and they said Alright, you can get down but I wanted to know exactly what my fighter weighed but they made him get off. It was going too fast.
Garcia and Celaya then moved away from the area to allow Julio César Chávez Jr. and his camp access to the scale. Garcia had intended to go back to the scale to monitor the weigh-in of Chavez but stated that he was suddenly cut-off by a perimeter of people surrounding the scale that were pushing and shoving which blocked his view of the scale beam. Chavez came up to the scale while Jose was putting on his pants. He stepped on the scale with his arms in the air and in a blink of an eye he stepped off and started drinking Pediolyte.* It was blur. They would not allow me to read the scale before Chavez stepped off. It was ugly, it was bad news. I went over to (Fernando) Beltran (the promoter) and said, Thats bull****! but he said nothing.
Garcia stated that he knew it was too late to complain as the fighters poised for photos. Chavez looked bad. I saw it in his face. Its going to be to our advantage anyway. I am not upset. I just want the people to know about this. We are going to win and we are going to win without cheating. Just because we are in Mexico doesnt mean that they can make their own rules. They are rules and regulations. At least you can do is make the weight! Although upset, Garcia was confident and proudly stated: We never threaten to pull out! The fight is on!
*Pediolyte is oral rehydration solutions (ORS) that contains a mixture of salt, sugar, potassium and other elements that is normally used for infants to replace body fluids that are depleted from vomiting or diarrhea. Boxers drink Pediolyte to quickly replenish their electrolytes from rapid or extreme weight loss.
It might do relatively okay. The last Fury PPV that he main evented (which admittedly had a much better undercard) got something like 70,000 buys. It doesn't really sound like a lot, even when compared to the smallest HBO PPVs, but they're good moneymakers for Top Rank/Bob Arum as there's not much need for advertising, low payroll, and little risk to JCCJr. -- another reason why they probably won't seriously increase his competition level in the near future.SSGMUN10000 said:I cant believe that garbage was on PPV. Im sure it didnt get many buys. Oh well Jr needs to step it up and the weight is killing him. He needs to move up if he can no longer hit 154.
It's kinda disappointing because before, I would regularly agree with Lederman or at least understand what he's giving them. Now it's a struggle to see how he's scoring some of these rounds.SSGMUN10000 said:I cant believe the way Lederman had the fight going on his score card. The man is going blind.
DarienA said:Best fight Taylor has fought in recent memory, just not enough to win. He landed the counter right at will but didn't use it enough.. taking off rounds 7,8,9 (I think endurance was a concern) doomed him.

Hopkins believes that Calzaghe having his father, Enzo, in his corner is added motivation. I'm going to punish him and it is going to take his father to be merciful to him, Hopkins said. He's got someone in his corner who will remind him things are not going too well. Joe will know when he's lying to him, just like Félix Trinidad's dad lied to him.
The American added it was not just Calzaghe he would be trying to get to as the Welshman is trained by his father, Enzo.
"His father is going to make the decision (to quit)," he said. "Most fighters will literally die... before they quit."
"I'm telling you that the father is the one that I get to," he said. "A father, like any father, will stop his son from getting executed."
DarienA said:I am SO hyped to be live at this MSG fight.
As many times as he's said he's going to lobby for an overruling, I don't think he's ever successfully done so.http://www.fightnews.com/salazar570.htm
In the eyes of promoter Gary Shaw, had the points not been taken away, it would be Marquez winning by split-decision.
Of course, I am unhappy with the decision, said Shaw, tersely to reporters. I am filing a protest with the WBC to reverse the decision in this bout. This is no way to end the trilogy between both these fighters.
Although Haye looks in great shape - ripped!
Any good?
Both he and his partner/co-promoter put up. (Trekas: "I believe in this man. I'd bet my life on it. And I did bet a bunch of money [legally, in Las Vegas].")Campbell informs me of a betting parlor that posted 7-1 odds on a Diaz victory. Campbell says he intends to put $50,000 on himself with the dividends to pay for two new cars for his fiance' should he win.
