Great episode...I'm still not sure why Gus killed the dude though? Is it because he is a mediocre cook, or is he just trying to mind fuck Walt and Jessie?
Because it was his job to protect Gale, I'm guessing.

Also because he was seen by a few people at Gale's apartment. Mike prolly told Gus that.

Also, what's up with this from the Onion A|V Club review? She had some work done in the off season?
Something looked a bit off with her. I couldn't tell if it was plastic surgery or if she had just put on some weight.

anyone else think Mike is totally going to eventually help Walt/Jesse take down Gus? His reaction of genuine shock on his face to the way Gus handled Victor was almost one of self-reflection. "Is this how I will end up?"
Maybe something will happen with his grand-daughter too, because after tonight's episode, Gus will stop at nothing if he messes up to ruin him.

Victor was seen at Gale's apartment, but the mind games are just as important. What Jesse said at the end was a call back to it, the "if we're not going to kill you, we're going to make you wish you were dead" line. Walt and Jesse show Gus they're up for killing, Gus calmly cuts Victor's throat with a box cutter in front of them, everyone's on the same page.

Good episode.

It was nice to see that Jesse really iced Carroll, I was worried if would be a fake-out. I'm hoping that Jesse becomes a heartless killer instead of being all emotional over it.

It'll be interesting to see where they take it from here. Looks like Carroll's notebook might cause some problems for Walt.

I think the phone will be a problem. Chances are his phone rang more then once when he got shot. Connect the phone and the book some how shit will go down. These cops can't be this dumb in this show.

Agree. Just saying that he could cook under optimal conditions wasn't enough to override that.

Yea I think it was a whole lot of just frustration. Someone had to die and he could not kill Walt at this point. This also mind F***d those who he wanted to kill. Even Mike seemed put off by that scene... great stuff.

Pretty sure that a interview with the show creator said that would not happen right after the season 3 finale.

Overall, a good episode, and it makes me excited for the season. I am still a little confused on why Gus killed Victor, it almost seems like the most likely reason was simply to show Walt and Jesse that he could, and would. I have to say I'm going to miss Gale's character, even though I think him being killed off was the right way to advance the story. And that last scene, the mixture of humor/heartbreak is so awesomely typical Breaking Bad, it was great.

I can't believe you all saw that coming. I was convinced Gus was going to mutilate Jesse or Walter, slam a fucking finger off with that thing. And holy shit, Gilligan knew it. Walt waving his hands around, pointing his fingers, I mean WHAT THE FUCK MAN!!!!!

It was like the show was looking me right in the eyes going WHAT. ALBUQUERQUE, WHAT.

the only thing i noticed about anna gun was that it looks like she put on some weight

her face seems more bloated
My first thought was that her character was pregnant again (would make for a good shitstorm between her and Walt if it wasn't his), but yeah she could've put on weight too.

Walt's ranting to incoherent babbling to pleading was also well done. Loved Jesse just sighing as Walt continues.
Yeah, I was just about the mention that. I was cringing during that entire 'speech'.

Victor failed in every capacity.

He couldn't keep Walt and Jesse apart, he couldn't protect Gale, and he likely ruined a number of chemicals by dumping them in so carelessly.

He wasn't at all useful to keep around, but at the same time he could serve as a demonstration for what Gus was willing to do to someone who crossed him.

haha I couldn't stop laughing at that shit. Great performances, as usual.

Jesse's gonna have one hellish season. I'm dreading what's in store for that dude.

I expected him to hurt Walt and Jesse enough without preventing them from cooking.

Yep, Victor was a new problem, so why shouldn't Gus make his demise be useful? Gus isn't afraid to get his hands dirty and he's fucking serious.

Loved Jesse's lines at Denny's. He was so unnervingly rational about it.

I was thinking along the same lines. It seemed that his first reaction when Gus slit Victor's throat was to point his gun at Gus. He seemed pretty unsure of himself after that

*edit* This was supposed to be a quote, not a reply. I was talking about the old dude, can't remember his name now

Yeah, this seems logical. Not sure how much it will matter in the long run with the stuff still coming on the market, though.

Jesse smartening up it seems. But the preview makes me question how long it lasts.
I think with the lab notes out the market will get flooded with blue KIRFs.

brianjones said:
yeah but that wasn't a reason to kill him

being at the crime scene was

i think its because he was tasked with getting rid of walt and he not only failed, but also let something happen to gale. or maybe he knew walt was right but didnt want to go out like a sucka. really it could be a number of things, but the bottom line is that walt outsmarted him. that says something about competence

edit: beaten...

You nailed what I was going to try and write.
Gus sent a message.

That dude had way too much screentime in this ep to not get killed off later. Saw it coming by the time he got up to go cook. And with this much tension in the room, somebody had to die, and since it's the beginning of the season, it's not gonna be a major character. Shit was like, visual storytelling 101.

Still fucking LOVED it regardless, though.

Am I the only one that hopes this Hank and Marie shit doesn't continue like this for the whole season? I understand why Hank is the way he is, but dude get over it. You should probably be dead right now, but you miraculously survived multiple gunshots while killing two criminals.

Thoughts:
Skyler got chubbier? What the hell.

I thought Gus was terrifying enough in the third season but God damn. I knew his assistant had to go because he was seen in Gale's apartment...but damn!

Speaking of his assistant he got more lines in the first 20 minutes of this episode than in the entirety of season 3 lol.

Jesse seems to have hardened up a lot but it's hard to tell, especially with him, how much of it is just hot air. His silence when Walt kept pressing him about Gale was telling, though it could be he really has decided it was simply necessary from their point of view.

But since the show has made it a point to show that Jesse can be very emotionally vulnerable, I don't know if we've seen the last of the Gale thing coming up as a problem for him.

I'm hoping that notebook will bring Hank back to life if he hears about it somehow.

Something will have to happen there. No way he will be fully back to normal but my guess... and just a guess.... Marie strays from the pack and enjoys some I.F.T. like situation, there is drama in that respect.

I think Hank will be miserable all season.

Victor was seen at the scene of the crime by multiple witnesses. They take very special care to point this out in the episode, by showing his interaction with the people there and then Mike very specially asks him not once, but twice, if he got seen at the crime. Gus arrives at the lab many hours after the shooting, so it's entirely possible he was able to wait and then see that Victor had been identified by the witnesses and was being sought as a person of interest. This is the main reason Gus kills Victor.

Hank is going to break bad and it's gonna be spectacular because of the build up. I hope they continue it. It's fucking heartbreaking though.

There's no way this show doesn't end with Hank and Walt at ends.

Hank:Walt
DEA:Gus

Or Mike told Gus about Victor being at the crime scene when he called him on the phone.

Good to see the thread moving so quickly. Hope it wasn't just us watching and we get some good numbers for the premiere.

Oh, and Paranoid Saul was pretty funny this episode.

So what does everyone make of Saul in this episode. Am I forgetting something at the end of season 3? He looked like he was ready to be taken in.

What was with the guy banging on the window at Sauls?

I wonder if that was a precursor to something.

I think saul is trying to distance himself from walt/gus/mike?

Well excuse me. It was more in reference to the AV club article that mentioned it.

Obviously I wasn't serious. There's no way anyone could possibly eat that many hamburgers in an afternoon.

But seriously, everyone thought someone was going to die? No one thought some fuckin' fingers were getting chopped? I don't buy it!!
