I'd been wanting to break it off with my girlfriend for a while now. We're both in different places in our lives right now, it's a long distance relationship, and I just didn't feel the same way for her as I once did. So I do every stupid guy trick in the book.

1) Lose interest and, act like a dope. This is basically so she maybe breaks up with me, and I don't feel as bad. (very "seinfeld"ean/ dumb way of doing things)

2) Drag the relationship on, because I don't know if I can be alone after being with someone for so long. The "Comfortable" situation people talk about.

So then I finally break up with her, and she's destroyed, so I feel bad and take it back. Worst possible thing ever to do. I am a complete idiot.

Now, I had the horrible situation of having to re-break up. Much, much worse. I probably hurt her even more. I am a complete asshole.

Moral of the story, don't be an asshole. If you don't like how a relationship is going, end it immediately. A break up should be like removing a bandaid, one quick motion. Don't do what I did. I'm a moron.

(Oh, and side note. Don't assume it will be possible to transition to friends after a breakup. Near impossible)

If we didn't have a lot of mutual friends, I might have considered it. But then you might give them the "I turned my boyfriend gay" complex. I know if I had a former girlfriend who turned lesbian, I'd feel like I let down my fellow man as a representative.

Yeah, crushing someone's very soul can be a painful experience. But if you're not happy then you have to do it sometimes. I've done it twice...the first one the girl resorted to cutting herself because she was so torn (she's better now?), and the second one was mutual. She was actually waiting for me to break up with her. Oh Seinfeld...

In the best relationship of my life right now so if anything bad happens I will be an emotional trainwreck. How about that? But here is hoping this lasts for a really long time because it's so damn good right now.
