If you were a fan of their debut, then the follow-up should please you too. It sounds like the band took the best aspects of the first record, fused them together with a little more ambience, and have created a great sounding, guitar-driven album that features some really smooth vocals and a breezy consistent flow throughout. Awesome. How you find it is up to you. :)

Dammit, I thought this was going to be a discussion of the hegemony of British naval power from the beginning of the 19th century to the First World War. Nuts. :-/

It's pretty damned good. More consistant than The Decline of... but there isn't anything that really stands out like "Carrion" or "Remember Me." I'm pretty impressed overall, though. I desperately want to see them live.

I like it a lot more than the first album. I'd be listening to it right now if I weren't listening to Magnolia Electric Company for the billionth time.

Yeah, Carrion and Remember Me are pretty damn great. So is Fear of Drowning for that matter. But while The Decline of... had some standout tracks, I don't think it's even debatable to say that the new album is far more consistent and actually sounds like an album rather than a collection of songs. I'm actually kind of glad the band kicked the style of songs like Apologies to Insect Life and focused more on their grand/bombastic style of guitar songs. The slower stuff near the end of the album is nice too.

I think this album is going to be one of the best of the year, as I stated in my thread about the same thing... And they're going on tour in May -- I cant wait.

Honestly, I wasn't very impressed the first few times I listened. I have to say, though, it is really great.

Only Super Furry Animals can tear me away from this one. Help me, Super Furry Animals. And since I talk about SFA so much, I'm expecting everyone on the forum who's interested in music to check the new album out in some format. I don't care who you are. Just do it.

The new Spoon album is all right, btw.

No, absolutely, this is a better record overall. I loved that Pixies inspired stuff, too, though! I listened to the first couple tracks to get ready for finals and shit all the time last year. :)

Speaking of early album of the year candidates, I hope some of you folks have checked out the new Bonnie 'Prince' Billy album. It's so good.
