Bungie ends development on Destiny 2

Best I can do is season 2 of marathon.

What made me give up on Destiny 2, ultimately, was Bungie's greed. As much as I was annoyed with content vaulting, it was when they started trying to extract every dollar out of their players when I finally checked out. The Bungie Anniversary stuff should have been completely free, not a $25 "premium" add on. Then paywalling dungeons behind deluxe edition expansions or season passes, or selling them separately as a premium.

Hell, I just took at peek at the current state of D2 pricing. As someone who quit after Beyond Light, if I wanted to come back and have an as-close-to-feature-complete game as possible, I'd have to shell out $150 for:

  • Destiny 2: The Legacy Collection (2025) [$70]
  • Destiny 2: Year of Prophecy [$80]

Even then I still wouldn't have access to the dungeons from the last three expansions included in The Legacy Collection and would have to buy the keys separately.

Bungie's greed is what killed Destiny, nothing else.

100 devs at 200K each for 4 years is 80m. What the hell these games spending money on ? I think there's crazy amount of slack in gaming industry causing it to go into crisis.

Run D1 classic. Gated progression like WoW does, and just layer each expansion on bit by bit over a year.

Easy money to just 60fps it. Sell it for $40 to include all D1 content but offer eternal mode for all content at once, and a classic mode like I mentioned above.

Brother I would spend $60 on that no cap. Add in cross play to it and I'd likely buy it on both my PS5 and my PC.

I just think this is reductionist mentality because that could be said for litrelly any game.

Firstly there's a few things one the reason destiny 2 flat lined was because bungies poor management, destiny 2 took a major hit because years back they neutered a ton of the best talent and put it on Marathon so destiny 2 lost priority.
So bungie should have just kept putting out Destiny even if they wanted to work on a new IP? Obviously focus is going to shift if that is something they wanted to do. I don't like it either so I don't really disagree.

With better leadership if bungie was made to allocate 100% on destiny 3 you're running at full force, everything is all ideas... The idea that d2 is it is just silly because there's litrelly any story that could be told, new worlds a whole new saga, in gaming it can go anywhere.
Where could they have taken the game by putting a #3 at the end of it though? just a shiny new coat of paint with more strikes, more raids, more dungeons and new loot. This is basically the formula they were following.

D3 also would've brought new engine to make a good feeling game feel even that much better, a new game gets people excited again with new loot, new quests, new worlds, new possibilities, maybe they have a new mode that becomes fan favorites like iron banner, or trials etc..
Destiny 2 was that new game once. People wanted gear they had in Destiny 1 brought over. Bungie responded by doing just that. What makes you think Destiny 3 wouldn't face the same thing? Seasonal weapons ended up being mostly reskins of weapons from before. How many different shapes of all the different weapons could they keep putting out for D3 that would have made a difference? It didn't for D2.

To me, when someone says what exactly can d3 do that hasn't been done in d2, tells me they aren't and weren't invested in destiny. Because in that game the sky was the limit, d3 with a full on bungie is the difference. Destiny hasnt had priority and 100% attention in years and that's why it went on autopilot.
How much could they really change about the series though? Expectations have already been set, the formula has been mostly set. Any time bungie has deviated from that, they have faced criticism, which they prob shouldn't have listened to.

D3 would've absolutely been a hit.

You're forgetting how entitled gamers are. They'd complain about that too lol.

Bro all the things you're asking is not my job to figure out. Gaming is up to devs to take us into worlds and places beyond our wildest imaginations. Every game is built on a loop that people enjoy, I mean if we're gonna get technical how does multiple forza games keep going when it's just tracks, cars, a big world to explore etc.. It's no different, destiny 3 is a new beginning.

As I said sure they can make new games but you still prioritize your flagship game, destiny printed money when its being supported.

The only reason destiny fell off is because the support shifted, if it was still strong it would still be going strong and I wouldn't have dipped out.

I go back to the point of any sequel, why do any sequel if it's just more of the same? Every game as I said has a loop that people love, we have 4 borderlands in the main game... They all offer different experiences while still being the same loop people love.

Yea destiny is a big part strikes and maps for pvp, raids, guns etc... It's the developers jobs to make destiny 3 a fun new experience. But that core loop is fun and lasts years, people never tire chasing good thought out quests and loot.

I been in these type of debates before and I'll never understand the "what more could they have done" argument, that makes absolutely not a lick of sense to me, just saying.

No need to be dramatic, it's poop cheap regularly on sale. You could have gotten those collections for like 20 bucks last month. But if you were properly 'keeping up', yes it was about a $80-$100/yr game. Everything including the dungeon keys will be bundled in the complete collection that launches along with the final update. And all the piecemeal collections are getting permanently marked down.

Destiny players are retards.
Destiny fanbase are their own worst enemy.
Some self-reflection; no lies detected.

Meanwhile they continue to play "the worst thing ever" on a daily basis but they act surprised when new players don't join them.
One of the most annoying things in recent years with D2 was that the numbers were there - new players in decent numbers... but what Bungies served up in terms of introducing them to the game and keeping them playing was obviously seriously lacking, because they couldn't retain them for shit. Terrible self-harm that management never gave enough resources and attention to because it ws obviously just a whole lot easier to squeeze harder on those dumb enough to stick around spending (and I played with enough of that type to know exactly how easy rinsing their wallets was).

D2's new player onboarding after they removed old content was legitimately one of the worst experiences I have ever seen in my life. Red War (base game) and the two year 1 expansions gave people a lengthy, focused questline that gated new players into experiencing and learning as they went. It was a pretty solid new player experience.

They took that away and replaced it with…like three missions that don't explain or teach a thing, and then throw you into the rest of the game with borderline zero indication of what you SHOULD do and just gives new players a massive, confusing checklist.

I knew as soon as red war got replaced with the current onboarding experience (which was worse when it was fresh, mind you. They've put bandaids on it since then that didn't really work) that they didn't give a toss if new people actually started playing, because they'd have prioritized a much better onboarding if they did.

Waiting for yurinka yurinka to spin this as fake news and actually a great success.

Destiny 2 has been Bungie's most successful game ever, and the top grossing game (since launch, not talking about current montly revenue) Sony ever owned.

But as I said for years, obviously games don't last forever and Destiny 2 was already old when acquired, so as part of any GaaS life cycle it was starting sunset when they acquired Bungie.

It made a lot of money even after the Sony acquisition even if it didn't reach their expectations, and it lasted more than originally planned (and what I thought), which was to end it with the Final Shape.

It's stupid, nonsensical and moronic to act as if games make money forever and that Destiny 2 didn't have a longer post-launch support than most live service games. Destiny 2 will release its last update (not counting minor updates to solve some minor bug or do server maintenance etc) almost 9 years after its release, which is longer than usual even if obviously there are a few games that lasted for longer.

Like any other AAA studio, after stopping to work in a project they'll move most/all their staff who was still working in this game to newer projects, and may fire some people they won't need during some months or years if can't relocate them elsewhere.

The problem is of course that Marathon isn't doing so great... and if they are not doing Destiny 3, what's the point of keeping Bungie around?
