I just just got a DVD burner and I'm currently trying to burn an AVI (episode of the Lost if ya wanna know) but I've never done anything like this before. Should I convert it first to mpeg, what program should I use... you know, standard noob questions.

I have Nero if that helps.

Yeah, if you have NeroVision Express, you don't even have to think about converting it. Just open the program, import the video files, set up the DVD Menu, etc., hit burn, and it will convert it all for you. Just remember to select a quality setting in the options as is applicable for your situation.

I have a question and thought this thread would be appropriate. I have been using Nerovision Express to try to burn some of my anime fansubs to DVD and whenever I set up a DVD and it goes to the preview screen, the video is upside down. Any idea how to fix this?

I think it's a problem with your codec. I had this problem as well a while ago but I'm not sure how I fixed it. I do know I looked for and installed all the latest codecs I could fine, but I'm not sure if that fixed it or if I did something else.
