Buying DVD-Rs for the first time.... suggestions? Much disparity in quality?

I've had no problem with Sony and Verbatim DVD-R on my machine.

I'm a bit wary of the off-brand stuff, just because I'm cheap / poor so I don't have much gambling money. :p

I know a guy who has burned 117 DVD-Rs (about 250 movies or so he says). All of them on one DVD burner and all of them were Verbatims. No problems at all.

are there any real differences between -R and +R's? i just started backing up my data with DVDs and i've used both -R +R without any problems, but i want to know whether if there are any advantages to using either type

Some time ago I purchased 100 Verbatim DVD-Rs for like $36. Totally worth it, so far.

TDK has never failed me.

I got some some memorex CDs the other day and so far almost half of them were bad.

The problem with Memorex is that the actual manufacturer of their media can vary wildly. Sometimes you'll get unlucky and get a nasty batch of discs made by CM Magnetics or some other lower-rated company. I stick with Ritek G04s. They're cheap now, and they've never given me any problems in a wide variety of players.

I've tried many different brands. I've ended up using Verbatim Datalife Plus exclusively. They never, ever fail.

a lot of the old dvd players and dvd burners only play/burned one format. newer players and burners do both without a problem. they are exactly the same.

I have read though that +R are the better bet for long term reliability.
Not if the media is made by a company known for making extremely reliable discs. If I backed up a movie onto a CMC Magnetics DVD+R and a Taiyo Yuden DVD-R, sealed them in a box, and opened it back up 20 years from now, I'd bet you that the CMC Magnetics disc would be unreadable while the TY disc would work.

Anyway, I'd suggest Ritek, Taiyo Yuden and Mitsubishi Chemicals DVD + or - media. I say "Mitsubishi Chemicals" instead of "Verbatim" now. It just so happens that Verbatim has partnered with companies like CMC for some of their cheaper media. Yuck.

From what I know, you can't even trust a certain brand 100 % because their different products (ie writeable DVD-discs) are sometimes produced in different factories...in turn leading to variable quality depending on where they're produced. I think there's a guide covering a lot of different DVD discs on the net, but I can't recall where (have to ask a friend of mine). It even lists the factories where the discs have been produced and so on...

Taiyo Yuden is the best (and they were the first). Verbatim would be second best. You should definitely get media made in Japan as they are superior to those made in Taiwan (that means you Ritek!).

Ritek isn't so bad dude. They are the only disc manufacturer out of Taiwan that actually makes reliable media. Gone are the days when you would burn a Ritek disc and find out that it wouldn't work 3 months later. They've become quite advanced in the past few years. I'll agree, when they tried to make their mark in the CD-R world they were horrible. However, their DVD+/-R's are excellent. They've also perfected their CD-R reliability as well.

Yuden is the best, but they are so overpriced.

I've only burned like 10 discs, but no problems at all with Taiyo Yuden.

Yeah, I've burned hundreds of Ritek G04 DVD-Rs. Can't say I've had any issues.

next question: what's the most common format for dvd players? i know 99.9% of all new dvd players play both +/- but some do not.

Never had a bad disc ever with Taiyo Yuden.

I've bought "brand name" CDRs before I knew about manufacturers and TY being the best, and I never had many coasters, but I did have problems reading discs a year after I wrote them. Not with TY.

Edit:

Last I heard - is best for DVD players and + is best for Raw data or something. Someone correct me because this is secondhand info from like a year ago.

Edit 2: Lol, this is one of those old threads. I've already replied before!

Edit 3: I fucking like to edit, bitch.

was a ritek follower till i had prob's with them in some xb's and ps2's, many of my friends use these as dvd players at parties etc, so it was a problem

went with Taiyo Yuden, never turned back, cheap as hell too

I know people hate em, but Imation has always worked well for me. Both CD-R's and now recently with my new DVD Burner. Granted, I'm not a big burner and only have recently got a DVD burner.

Imation uses pretty good quality discs, last batch I got were riteks.

I've got a spindle of ridata (riteks), they work well.

Speed is a much bigger factor I think. Use 4x and nothing else, and the discs will last forever.

The first media I tried was Maxell. It worked, so it's what I've stuck with. I bought some Memorex's 'cause they were cheap and it just ended up being a waste of money.

I've heard good stuff about Ritek.. my brother has burned a lot of DVDs for a project he's been working on and those discs have worked well while some other "bulk" brands not so much.

I don't think it is that big of a deal, honestly. Just don't buy out of the bargain bin. Will the overpriced discs from the best manufacturers last longest? Probably, but when you are talking about 5 years versus 20 years....who cares? I don't have any CD-Rs left over from 5 years ago, and in 5 years I doubt you'll be needing any of your old DVD-Rs either. Unless you are a serious archivalist, just buy middle-of-the-road stuff when it's on sale. I get TDK discs whenever a good deal pops up and I've never had any problems with them.

I also use Ritek DVD's, but here they're called Ricoh for some reason, never failed me.

The worst experience I've had was with Verbatim DVD's. Out of the ten I bought only two worked semi-properly, I'll never buy that junk again.

(Looks down at the memorex ad at the bottom of the page... lol)

I would like to throw in that Memorex does indeed suck. I had many problems with them. Out of the 100 CD I burned a few years ago, maybe half of those still work.

Maybe the DVD quality is better, but I wouldn't take that chance.

I've only had a burner for about a month or so, but I've been using Sonic DVDs. They are only around $12 for 50 of 'em, so I'm just plain happy with that. And I've had little number of errors as well while burning.

I suggest:

Ritek (the only "cheap" media I would buy)
Taiyo Yuden
Verbatim

Avoid:

CMC Mangetics
Prodisc
Everything else basically :D
