Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 - Analyst Says Game Pass Didn't Hurt Numbers

The release of a new Call of Duty game is almost always one of the best-selling titles in any given year. But since Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 debuted on Game Pass on day one of its release, there was some question as to whether this would diminish the title's impact and sales across Xbox Series X|S and other platforms. It's too early to render a final judgment about that, but so far, one analyst says that Black Ops 6 wasn't hurt at all by being on Game Pass.

"Call of Duty engagement following the release of Black Ops 6 can only be defined by the term 'bonkers,'" Circana analyst Mat Piscatella wrote on Bluesky. "We've yet to see anything like it in our engagement tracking data... There's been an ongoing debate about Game Pass and its impact on sales and it's never been settled because... it depends. Sometimes it helps sales (especially through virality), sometimes it hurts. After two weeks, my take on this one is that it may not have helped, but it also sure didn't hurt."

According to Activision, Black Ops 6 had the highest opening weekend numbers for any game in the franchise among total players, total hours played, and total matches. Treyarch associate creative director Miles Leslie credited Game Pass for the resurgence in interest in the long-running franchise among lapsed players.

"We've gotten to the point now where Black Ops and Call of Duty have been around so long--I've been working on it for 16 years," said Leslie. "And really the challenge for us is how do you bring along the fans that love Call of Duty, but how do you create an environment where you can welcome new fans in?"

One of the promises that Microsoft had to make in order to close its acquisition of Activision Blizzard was a deal to keep Call of Duty games on PlayStation consoles for at least a decade. Activision hasn't released its sales figures for Black Ops 6 yet, but putting it on Game Pass seems to have accomplished the company's goals for the franchise. At least for now.

Meanwhile actual sales were lower than MW3 which wasn't even that big a seller compared to other releases in the series. Guess we found out what they meant by "performing".

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
The Vault Edition upgrades are on the top of the paid apps in the US and UK last I checked. They're getting revenue from a lot of GP subscribers who might not have bought the game anyway but are happy to shell out $30 to go along with their continuing sub.

Also, these numbers are fucking insane.

58% of all Series and 37% of all PS5 players were on CoD.

However, sales are up 24% YOY in the UK. Not sure about other areas.

Any "analyst" making a call at this stage is full of shit. And should be ignored.

The cumulative impact will take 6months to a year to become apparent, because the value is all in the trade-offs in the mid to long term.

Call of Duty doing well is kind of a given. The tell, like Clear Clear said, is going to be in a few months from now and seeing how many of those new Gamepass subscribers are still paying for the service.

They were 15% down in the UK vs MW3

It's genuinely amazing how this game keeps breaking records. It's the same shit every year but it still gains more players than before almost year on year. Of course I'm typically one of those players, but to hear it showing no signs of slowing down is madness.

On a slightly different note, I can't see them ever taking the game away from Playstation, it sells far too many copies and would only be to their detrement as far as I can tell.

Unsurprisingly, the month was led by Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. This is the first game in the series that was available in the Game Pass subscription service (available on Xbox and PC) from launch, which inevitably had a negative impact on its premium sales. Indeed, compared with 2023's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, launch sales are 11% lower.

If we just focus on sales of the franchise on PlayStation platforms (PS4 and PS5), where Game Pass isn't available, we can see that premium sales are up 24% year-on-year. So overall, it looks like a positive launch for the series this year.

Xbox/PC sales are down (Game Pass), PS4, PS5 sales are up 24%.

Not hurting it is actually something I said could be considered a win. If they can maintain the status quo and not actively lose money on it, they can keep GP "dormant" until the viral cloud / sub adoption that theoretically may happen over the next decade.

66% sales up YOY on PS5 and 66% sales up YOY on PC..... in a global level .MS said in the same information. They don't just point engagement data.

The data in this thread is in the USA, but COD Vault upgrade 30$ has been number one on Xbox since launch in all markets XboxStores and the game is in the top 3 (also on UK)

. Almost 60% of XSeries users playing the game for sure means something. That COD BO 6 continue being Top 1 on Steam also i think.

Sales are up on Playstation and they are down on PC and especially down on xbox leading to a 15% decline overall. Now read the title of the thread and guess why it's down on those two.

GG, looks like Xbox first party put out one of, if not the, biggest games of the year.

I answered that. Game Pass. Why wouldn't there be less retail numbers on PC/Xbox when people access it via Game Pass? Those that don't have access to Game Pass, retail sales are up 24% in the UK. Were you the only person expecting PC/Xbox numbers to be UP with people playing the game with their Game Pass sub? That is confusing.

Retail sales are down in the UK overall why do you keep saying they're up using just PS sales? We're in a thread saying

"Analyst Says Game Pass Didn't Hurt Numbers"

But sales overall in the UK it did hurt. Numbers like "hours played and total matches", no.

I see you are confused. Never mind.

Actually a lot of people here… Maybe they don’t understand how GP works or they can’t say anything positive related to GP.

How am I confused? In a thread saying gamepass didn't hurt numbers I said

"hours played, matches, Meanwhile actual sales were lower than MW3 which wasn't even that big a seller compared to other releases in the series." and you replied

"However, sales are up 24% YOY in the UK. Not sure about other areas."

Then i say in the UK they were down 15% and you say on PS they were up. A platform that gamepass doesn't even apply to.

Ehhh I'm not sure that's really impressive.

Xbox userbase is ~30M, so 58% is ~17.5M.
That's rather low, given that it was available through GP as well. Makes you wonder how well GP subs are going...

And that's ignoring the fact that 37% of PS5 users is ~24M players.

Edit:

Just realized it was about US users?
If it's worldwide, above numbers apply, otherwise my numbers are off.
