between a quark and a baryon
1) OLYMPUS 4.0 mgpx / 10x optical zoom , model # c76suz $449.99

2) KODAK #EKC DX6490, 4.0 mgpx / 10x optical zoom $399.96

between these two.. which is the better camera? also.. anyone have other suggestions around the same price range? the main feature i need is the 10x optical zoom.

also, is there a big difference between 5mgpx and 4mgpx ??

EDIT: And 5MP just gives you a higher-res image in the end. Four will be good for most purposes, unless you need to crop a lot (should have less need to crop with a 10x zoom) or you need to print really big.

I'd probably lean towards the Olympus if only because I'm not sure I like what Kodak does with their color and compression

the olympus is the better camera, actually its quite a bit better. differences between 4 and 5 mp will be negligible unless you are printing 8x10 (and bigger sized) portraits, scenic shots etc. if you just view them on a monitor it shouldnt be a concern at all. 5 mp will have more detail basically, and allow you to print at larger sizes.
for comparison, going from 3.2 to 5 is a good advance, but from 4 to 5 is negligible.
i'd ask you to check out the canon S1 IS (because im a canon whore), it has an image stabilizer which will help immensely, and the options will be comparable to the olympus. though you lose out on the resolution as its 3.2 mp.
among the three, the olympus is still the best though.

Can't really comment on the Olympus as I've never actually seen it in a store, but I am a DX6490 owner and I like it. :) You can still check more reviews:

If you have seen lots of reviews and/or you have tried both cameras and can't decide, I'd start looking at the bottom line such as which camera I could get cheaper or if the memory cards it uses are the same as the ones I use in other devices (or older cameras) if I were you.
