Can we please talk about Grappler Baki?

Grappler Baki is by far my greatest guilty pleasure in anime/manga. Grappler Baki is one of the most entertaining and bizarre martial arts series I have ever seen/read. The show stars Baki Hanma, a young talented martial artist who is training to become the best grappler in the world, in order to defeat his father Yujiro Hanma, the most powerful creature on earth. You go through his journey as he trains with other fighters, befriends said fighters and improves so that he can defeat his father. Sounds pretty atypical right? Well shit gets fucking weird in this show REALLY fast. The show starts off almost grounded in it's approach towards fighting and martial arts, but soon enough all the main characters become freaks of nature who are capable of ridiculous feats. And Yujiro above all else is the king of this. Yurjio Hanma is one of my favorite anime characters, because he is just insane, more a force of nature than a fucking human being. This dude pretty much exists to fuck people up. This man defeated the entire US military during Vietnam, with his bare hands. The United States fucking surrendered to this single man. Obama (who is also Yujiro fanboy lol) has to renew a treaty with him later on in the damn manga!

The scene that probably made me love this series and Yujiro as a character, is when he stopped an earthquake with a punch. Up until this point, the series had become fairly ridiculous. Baki fought a goddamn giant mountain ape for Christ's sake:

But nothing even came close to Yujiro's feat at this point. Yujiro as a character is just hilarious to watch, the guy will literally just drop in and fuck-up EVERYONE'S shit.

Yujiro alone propped up the entire show for me, but even not taking him into account, Baki is an incredibly fun fighting anime/manga full of hot-blooded monstrosities. It's honestly the most manly masculine anime/manga series I've seen, which is hilarious juxtaposed by the artstyle. Baki is a pretty ugly looking series IMO, the anime is not particular drawn or animated well. The manga has an artstyle that I found very unappealing for the longest time. Characters look lumpy and have very odd anatomy in-general. And I swear everyone looks like they have "fuck me eyes", but eventually I really found a lot charm in it. If you want to see big muscular freaks beating the shit out of each other with homoerotic undertones, you really can't beat this series.

I know I'm probably rambling at this point, but I'm just hoping to spread the love for this incredibly fun property, that has been one of my favorites for years now. Baki the Grappler is just absurd in all the right ways, and is pure entertainment. The series overtime becomes so ridiculous that it's truly a pleasure. A damn cave-man that hunted T-Rex was revived and became the focal-point for an arc, because all the main characters wanted to fight him.

This shit is crazy y'all.

Anatomy may be shot to pluto, but it's a fun and crazy awesome fighting manga
DAT OROCHI DOPPO SON

Also Hanma Yujiro is totally Gouki/Akuma from Street Fighter
Or vice versa.

Doppo is one of the best old-men in fighting manga/anime.

I'm thinking that Yujiro predates Akuma, and must have had some influence on the character. They are very similar.

I thoroughly enjoyed the anime, especially the tournament.

Crazy ass shit. And it's great to watch Baki grow up.

Yeah, the Maximum Tournament is one of my favorite anime tournament arcs. It's just so damn fun, feels like it's straight outta something like Street Fighter. All the main fighters have an archetype and their own quirks. The cast has people from REALLY varied backgrounds in that tournament, and it's fun to see them interacting with each other. Got trained martial artists going up against straight goons like Chiharu Shiba. And I just love the way they hype people up in this series. The way Retsu Kaioh was introduced was just badass. You know through the side-chatter this dude ain't the one to be fucked with.

"Tell me, you think you're prepared for this? I learned from the best. The Kung Fu masters who completed my training surpassed your level of expertise 3000 years ago. 3000 years versus your infantile knowledge of combat! Choose your next move wisely, because it will be your last."

I mean goddamn. That's top tier shit talking. Loved how fucking arrogant Retsu was lol. So many exchanges in that tournament arc that range from awesome to downright hilarious. Sometimes both at the same time lol.

I have to finish reading Son of Ogre. It's been a while since I last read it. I'll probably do it once I am done with school.

Great manga. I stopped reading it after the Cave man arc wrapped up.

When I work out I sometimes yell out "ENDORPHINSSS!"

I liked it up until sometime during Son of Ogre where it seemed to drag on and on.

Probably my favorite fighting series as far as attempting true to life martial arts and choreography - albeit trumped up to comically inhuman levels.

The tv series was also a really great adaption and I loved they devoted the entire second season to the Maximum Tournament. It really had everything, even WWF's Ultimate Warrior. =P Now I have the urge to rewatch it.

Their explanation of techniques is a blast to read. Ali Jr's use of boxing, or how concussions work.

But baki dou is confusing. I dnot see its direction with weapons. Also remember how they had Brock lensar too.

See this is why I love this fucking series. That scene was so hilarious and filled with sexual innuendo. Baki is just so fun to watch.

Lol, I remember that! Really need to get back into Baki Dou, but yeah I wasn't sure what direction it was going in either. Son of Ogre honestly would have been a great place to end the series. Can't really get enough Baki though. You're also very right, the explanation of techniques and styles was excellent. Had weird pseudo science that was great too. Pretty much loved when they dived deep into that stuff. Itagaki did study and practice martial arts, and I really think it comes through in the material.

I've rewatched the entire series like 5-6 times now. It's is so re-watchable. I just can't stress enough how entertaining of an anime Baki is to watch. I can easily look past the meh animation, and the sometimes downright hideous art-style. I mean good lord look at the cover to the DVD boxset!

Tells you everything you need to know. Fun awaits.

is the manga still going? yujiro is so ridiculously overpowered i can't see anybody ever beating him.

I think Baki Dou is currently ongoing. And who can get beat Yujiro? Baki is a damn monster, and maybe Jack Hanma one day. I can't see anybody but a Hanma taking Yujiro.

Man..... I have to catch up. Haven't read any in 10 years (only because I got caught up and got frustrated when I had to deal with the weekly w/e cycle lol). Brb.

God I loved this anime. I never read any of it, though. I did hear they introduced Yujiro's dad at some point and he ended up being just as OP as Yujiro. Is that true?

Yeah I finished watching the anime a few months ago. Entertaining stuff. I do have some complaints though, which I'll talk about in detail later, but one thing that really bugged me was
Baki's brother. He's the older son of Yujiro, the strongest man in the world, but his special ability is... steroids? Fuck that shit.

It was a chapter dedicated to showing a flashback of Yuichiro thrashing the US Navy in the Pacific Theatre.

No fights with established characters, so it's hard to say HOW OP he was.

His real special ability was his intense drive, not the drugs. His dedication to training was absolutely insane.

True we didn't see much. But the way Yujiro spoke of his father, and simply how he was rag-dolling those soldiers, I bet he was up there in power. He sounded like a real pain from the perspective of the military too, so he had to be a pretty bad dude.

I opened the thread just to post about Orochi Doppo and it's the first post.

The anime is a blast. I used to watch it before going to the classes on the uni. Shame it's so badly animated and the contrast with the 3-4 well animated episodes only makes me cry for a better adaptation.

Never read the manga.

Now I want to rewatch it. It's been i think 9-10 years since the last time i watched it.

Thanks for the spoiler, homedawg.

I watched the first episode on Funimation's site when I was a kid. I remember Baki beat up like 50 guys or something. Streaming was new back then so there was no way for me to watch anymore.

Anyway, you have completely sold me on this OP. I'm adding it to the list and I'll watch it when I get a chance. I didn't know Baki's dad was such a beast like LMAO at Obama begging him for a treaty. And that naked guy in one of the last images looks like a Titan from AoT. o.o

Is there anywhere I can catch up on the Caveman arc, cuz that's where I left off. Think the last couple of chapters had old boy using his hand for a whip against the caveman, only to find out that that isn't how the human body works, and his hand looked like doo doo afterewards.

Lol, that was real as fuck. My man Katsumi completely fucked his shit up.

Loved the anime. Some of the best fight scenes in the medium imo. Is the manga worth reading?

Loved the homages to real fighters and pro wrestlers in it like Hickson Gracie, Giant Baba, Andre & Ionaki.

The tournament arc in the anime was awesome. Loved every second of it. Its like an anime version of PRIDE. So the manga is going on still? Wow. I'm deff gonna read up on it to see the story continue.

The manga goes on FAR past any of that. New Grappler Baki had a really awesome start - I absolutely loved the angle of all the convicts converging in Japan and the 'fight anywhere' sequences with Dorian, et cetera. It was a blast, I've reread that arc quite a few times. Hell, the Ali Jr. stuff was executed masterfully.

Son of Ogre had some awesome moments too. The Black Pentagon arc was really, really fun.

There is so much you're missing by not reading the manga.

Also, if any of you thought that Hanayama yakuza kid was a fucking badass BEFORE, he actually has his own spinoff manga called Baki Gaiden: SCARFACE which is unabashed 'holy shit this guy is awesome.'

I never got into it because of how ugly it is. Guess I should give it another shot.

I hear you man. The art in the original manga definitely takes an adjustment period for sure, and the anime is not really animated well at all lol. However, I found that it became very easy to look past as I watched/read the series. Just because the material was so enertaining. Definitely worth a shot checking it out again. I almost don't bat an eyelash at how weird the art is anymore.

Almost lol. But for real, this style genuinely grew on me. I've never seen anything else quite like it lol.

Everything about this is perfect. What a manly combination.

Lol, it is indeed. I've never watched or read anything this hot-blooded.

I've never watched the series myself, but the only thing I know about it is a trailer from some old anime DVDs and the song on it sounded like a man was sing "DIDN'T SHAVE, DIDN'T SHAVE, OH YEAH I DIDN'T SHAVE oooOOOOooooOOOO".

You mean Child Prey? That shit was on my play-lists for years lol. Was the opening theme to the anime and I really enjoyed it. I found that intro to be pretty hype too lol. I remember when I came across Baki randomly on Comcast VIdeo-On Demand, figured a series called "Baki the Grappler" had to be a fighting anime, and I believe I saw the OVA before so it wrung some bells in my memory. I was pretty much instantly hooked. Specially after seeing 13 year Baki fight 100 fucking dudes, and defeat like 50 of them. The show came off as pretty cool with this badass kid immediately.

No fucks given.

Muscles in Baki might as well be what Stands are for the Jojo series. With the same amount of 'what is happening right now?'.The extreme violence as well as the art-style turned me off at first but then i saw just how ridiculous it gets.
The author loves the muscles he draws ,despite how he draws them he puts extreme detail on all of them. And there is no downplaying the homoerotic undertones when muscles clash, like it's happening ,the characters know it looks exatly like that.
I marathoned it when i heard the 'final battle' had happened already, but it was nice to see it continue. Now waiting for that new OVA later this year

is the manga still going? yujiro is so ridiculously overpowered i can't see anybody ever beating him.

Right now mostly anything that could possibly happen in a fighting manga has happened and now even weirder shit is happening in Baki Dou the current series.

I haven't read the entire series, I need to take breaks as the art is a bit of a turn off but the story and characters are as entertaining as they are over the top but I fully expect aliens will come to Earth and challenge the greatest fighters to an intergalactic tournament or something.

After Pickle, I really think almost anything is possible in Baki. Aliens wouldn't be a stretch for me, and Yujiro would destroy them.

In Baki Dou they've cloned
Miyamoto Musashi and everyone is trying to fight him and he's just fucking them all up. The most recent translated chapter has him seeing a news report on Pickle and getting excited.

It is so fucking dumb in all the best ways.

my favorite part is when yujiro goes visit
Mohammed Ali's son

then presents him with THE TOUGHEST PUZZLE IN FIGHTER HISTORY

what do you do against a stronger man who is on his back on the floor?

and Ali's kid just says lol, you walk out and then proceeds to peace the fuck out

and Yujiro goes BANANAS at being owned so hard
