Can we talk about how Frank Miller in 1986-1987 was in God mode

Mister Apoc

Demigod of Troll Threads
I mean he had an amazing 1979-1983 run on Daredevil
but then 1986 hits.....

The Dark Knight Returns, revolutionizes the comic book industry alongside Watchmen

Daredevil "Born Again" so gooooood

Batman: Year One, another landmark batman graphic novel..often considered one of the top 3 batman graphic novels (alongside TDKR and Killing Joke) so 2 of 3 of the best Batman Graphic Novels are his creation essentially

Regardless of what you think of his later work and his Far-Rightish politics...his work in 86-87 already certifies him as one of the greatest comic book writers of all time

Daredevil_Born_Again.jpg

Greatest storyline in Marvel History...if not in the top 3 at the very minimum

I have this theory. That at some point in the last 15 or so years, an alien lifeform came down and inhabited the body of Frank Miller. It disguised itself as him and tried to imitate him to live among us.

This makes more sense to me than the idea that the same person who wrote all the stuff you mentioned, plus Ronin, Sin City, and 300, also wrote The Spirit, Holy Terror, The extra stories for the second Sin City movie, All-Star Batman and Robin, and DKR 3 (DKR2 had its moments).

I still gotta read TDKR and I always wanted to read his Daredevil.

Year One was good and as outright trashy as it was ASB&R was a fun read.

his run in comics was great. we probably wont get stuff like it again since comics now suck and is doing bad and i say should die. some of his work i didnt like but he had a personal style.

So far I've only read TDKR and honestly.... I didn't like it.

I've read both it and Watchmen and while I loved Watchmen TDKR just didn't grab me, maybe it's because I wasn't there in 1986 when it debuted and while I could see that it was an envelope pushing story for it's time, I'm not sure it's aged well, a "dark and gritty" take on Batman is not as much of a novelty as it was at the time

That said, I certainly haven't written him off, he has a lot of work and I'd be willing to try more, I also should probably give TDKR another try one day, maybe my expectations were too high considering it's often mentioned hand in hand with Watchmen.

I've also seen him in TV interviews and things over the years and he seems like an interesting, likable guy.

My favorite work of his is Ronin. It's a cyberpunk/samurai story that was the direct inspiration for Samurai Jack. Really great read.

"Can we talk about..." is annoying conformist bugman language, every time I see that phrase I picture a soyboy uptalking the question. Thread title would have been better like this: "Frank Miller in 1986-1987 was in God mode"

I would say Warren Ellis was in god mode late 90s and early 2000s: Authority, Transmetropolitan, Planetary, Orbiter, Minister of Space.

Yea his 90s stuff is amazing. I wasn't big into comics growing up but his early stuff really got me interested in them. I have TDKR l, Sin City, Daredevil and 300.

Not a fan of his later work and don't like that he's a right wing fenatic but the man is a legend in terms of comic books.

The Dark Knight was good but to me that run of Daredevil by Miller and Mazuchelli is peak Miller. It’s also peak Daredevil, Brubaker’s recent run ( comparatively)was amazing but that Daredevil run it felt like it went beyond comics. I remember waiting each month for the next issue to come out. It was killer when his run ended because it happened very suddenly and felt very Jarring at the time and the comic went downhill fast. It was similar to John Byrne’s run on Alpha Flight absolutely amazing with no way for the people coming after to follow and not dissappoint.

It's sorta like how they've got a little bit of doubt about it. but in fact it's the truth
