Okay, first it started out as a joke. "Oh no, Bush won, everybody go to bishoptl's house." I decided to bite, and started researching schools in Canada. And it just so happens that Vancouver University has everything I freaking want, more so than my current school.

I need to call upon Canadian/Vancouverians about information on the requirements of permanent residency. Please, don't link me to the CIC site, unless there is a direct link to the list of stuff you need to apply.

Also, I would like a little information about Vancouver- public transportation, access to campus, yadda yadda. Please give me a hand!

UBC is a beautiful school.
It's right near the fricking Pacific!
Public transportation in Vancouver is very good - I think it won best in North America many years ago...

UBC is on the "West Side" of Vancouver. Generally pretty expensive to live around, unless we're talking in terms of dorms. There's a bus that goes straight to the campus from one of the skytrain stations (Granville?) that runs every 15 minutes (I'm pretty sure), so it's easy to get to from just about anywhere.

The Skytrain route.

I'll leave the residency part to someone else.

UBC is a beautiful campus, and in close proximity with the downtown of Richmond, which has all your usual big shopping malls, resturuants... etc. Oh, and Richmond is like a mini-Asia =P Lots of Asian people and stuff there.

UBC isn't close to Richmond........

For housing, I could ask around for you. I went to high school in burnaby, so I have a number of friends who at at UBC right now. What sort of thing are you looking for? Will your major require you to spend a lot of time at school? Price range?

and yes, the 99b bus is the only realistic mode of transportation to get there. Skytrain, then 99b. Since the campus is on the shore, it's pretty much out-of-the-way for everybody. It's a hassle to go to school, and it's a hassle to go home.

Also, what do you mean permanent residency? You mean as in the immigration status, or just a place to stay?

Well, I'm probably looking for a studio apartment, or a dormitory. I'd be splitting it with another guy, so maybe 300 bucks a month? I don't know if that price is too low, I've never looked for a studio apartment, or anywhere in Vancouver. Forgive my ignorance.

As for permanent residency, it says that tuition (for my major) is just bellow 5000 a year if you are a permanent resident or a Canadian resident. Not a student visa. With a student visa, tuition is a whopping 15000, so I want to try and obtain permanent residency. I'm not exactly sure what that entails, and the most I could find on it was a permanent residency CARD application. And I don't need the card, at least not yet.

And everyone, thanks for info on the transportation system.

Just to let you know (I'm in Toronto, so at least I've heard) that housing prices in Vancouver are the highest in North America. My younger brother is paying $600/m (CND)for a 10x10 foot room in downtown Toronto, so I'm not sure what you should expect in Vancouver. Just a heads up. :)

UBC loves international students.

*cough* greedy-ass school *cough*

As for living space, just move in with Mike Works. He's got a big place. :)

i don't know if it applies to the internationals, though i suspect it does, but for $20 a month, you get a u-pass that lets you have unlimited access to public transit (buses/skytrain). so anywhere you wanna go, the buses can take you. it's mandatory but it's a good deal. though the price might go up in the next few years.

I don't have a big place. It may be big compared to some American suburb houses, I suppose, but it's small/average by Vancouver standards. It's just on very good property.

Mike, what do you say? I clean really, REALLY good.
You could clean my cock with your face 20 times a day and it still wouldn't be worth it. Roommates drive me nuts. If you're rich, then we'll talk.

UBC is one of the most expensive places to live in North America. Again, if you can find an on-campus dorm (good luck to ya), that'd be the cheapest option. Better to find a place off campus and ride the bus down the Broadway corridor.

edit: that rent.bc website is the bomb - I found a wicked place through them a few years back.

Nope. I graduated in 01...
But so did he! He only got to your school from mine in the final year, though, so you may have never met him. Funniest guy you would have ever met.

To make sure I've got the right school/year, what about Nick Damiani? I played soccer with him. Somewhat of a douche.

I don't know that guy either.
BN is a big school... and I'm Chinese, so our social circles probably never crossed. *shrug*
