TOKYO--After a string of unprofitable years, Capcom is no longer a lurching zombie filled with red ink. Capcom has announced that it earned a net profit of 3.6 billion yen ($33.5 million) for the business year that ended March 31, 2005. That's a major rebound from FY2004, when it took a loss of 9.2 billion yen ($85.7 million), 7.73 billion ($67.74 million) of which came as a one-time loss suffered by its banking house subsidiary.

For the past three years, Capcom has been striving to improve its business structure. The company has struggled to close down unprofitable operations, and focus its resources on consumer game research and development. The strategy seems to have worked, as revenue was up by 25% to 65.9 billion yen ($614 million), and the company had a recurring profit of 7.4 billion yen ($69 million) in FY2005--more than nine times what it earned in FY2004.

In Japan, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, which Capcom picked up the Japanese rights to from Rockstar Games, sold well for an imported title, and Monster Hunter G was also a success. Mega Man Zero 3 and Mega Man Battle Network 5 also sold well throughout the year. On the flip side of the coin, some anticipated titles, such as Resident Evil Outbreak File 2, Devil May Cry 3, and Viewtiful Joe 2, saw slack sales.

In overseas markets, however, Resident Evil 4, Devil May Cry 3, and Resident Evil Outbreak were popular enough to increase Capcom's bottom line. Sales of budget reprint titles also contributed to the company's profits.

In America, Mega Man Anniversary Collection, Mega Man Battle Network 4, and the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection proved to be winners for the company. On the other hand, Onimusha 3 failed to reach Capcom's sales expectations.

Looking ahead, Capcom expects a net profit of 3.9 billion yen ($36.3 million) for the current business year starting April 1. The company hopes to strengthen its multi-platform offerings, and also plans to increase sales in overseas market.

Business as usual really... it's not so much Capcom's games unit doing better or anything, they just don't have banking/real estate pulling them into the red this year. :P

Good news. I wonder how RE4 ended up selling when all was said and done.
I'm guessing it shipped around 1.5-1.8M worldwide. The PS2 release and budget GC reprint later this year should match that figure to double total sales I think. If Capcom was smart they'd have a "Director's Cut" ready for GameCube and also some Xbox/PC ports this fall to maximize sales on all fronts... RE4 is a big enough title to make it worth the effort.

I didnt know Capcom published GTA in Japan, thats kinda cool. Anyone know how well (or bad) it does over there?
VC managed around 300k total iirc. Not bad at all.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Capcom PS2 ACT 410,293 sold in 2004
Grand Theft Auto III Capcom PS2 ACT 308,764 308,764 sold in 2003

After playing RE4, Viewtiful Joe 2, and, playing a bit late, DMC1 and RE2 (for n64!) I was blown away by how amazing Capcom is. They deserve everything they get and then some.

I'd buy this if it included a new scenario or something like that (along the lines of Ada's) when it hit $20 or so.

I'd buy another RE4 for GC with additions for $30 in a blink of an eye...

Note to Capcom:

-Add the PS2 extras in a special edition(Player's Choice) for $30 for the Cube please

These are amazing numbers for a western game...The PR makes it sound like it was the top seller in Japan!

I wonder how other japanese 3rd party giants did, like Namco and Konami (er, and Sega)?

It's a shame VJ2 didn't sale as well as it should, but that was just bad timing.

interesting, they became profitable right after they started shifting support away from the GC
Flawed analysis. Read the article, it says that Onimusha 3 had slack sales in America while RE Outbreak and DMC 3 had poor sales in Japan. All of them are PS2 exclusives.

sales & profit are 2 different things, you can have slack sales but still be profitable or you can have great sales but still be unprofitable

they deserve a squillion dollars for minish cap alone.

Onimusha 3 was anything but profitable.

Who the f*ck keeps buying Resident Evil Outbreak? STOP IT D*MMIT!!!!!

Resident Evil Outbreak is a great idea but poorly executed.

File 2 is a step in the right direction though, if they could combine the best elements of 2 with the camera system of 4 and a communication system with voice proximity we'd have a real winner on our hands.

No, SFAC did well so GET OFF YOUR ASSES AND MAKE SF4!!!!

Although, we'll see a Street Fighter Alpha Collection and possibly some weird collection that includes SF the Movie, the EX games and SF1 before that.

Capcom USA owns the rights to Street Fighter now, so SF4 is guaranteed to suck. I'd rather see Alpha Collection or Darkstalkers Collection (or CPS3 collection with the Jojo games, SF3 NG and 2i and WarZard) than a shitty SF4.

strengthen its multi-platform offerings...

DMC4 on 360...

But like that one dude said, I bought a lot of Capcom games this past quarter.

DMC3
RE4
SFA
MMA
Pure Evil Pack (don't bother, REmake and RE0 suck ass, boooooring ZzzzZzZzzzzZ)

I love Capcom, everyone else will make their "based off of Unreal engine, shiny glossly looking 30 fps crap with lots of light bloom and FPS, sandbox GTA like play" but Capcom will be making those games with old-school difficulty and acrade action fun ^_^

Actually, I believe he's right.

Onimusha 3 was considered "slack" in BOTH Japan and US.

310,000 US
620,000 JPN
320,000 Europe

It "slacked" in all regions, yet Onimusha 3 MADE PROFIT having done almost 1.3 million worldwide. If not, I don't think they'd be making a new Onimusha.

I've heard developers say games that sell a million never make a profit (EotM)

while games that sell 100,000 do, Katamari Damancy.

Can't be so sure actually given the extremely high production values. That level of high quality FMV, Jean Reno & Takeshi Kaneshiro don't exactly come cheap... it was likely one of the most expensive action games ever made honestly. Plus the game made zero gains in the west as hoped and actually lost half it's Japanese fanbase in the process, despite a healthy advertising campaign. Onimusha 3 might've edged out a slight profit, but this game proportionately is likely Capcom's biggest "bomb" this generation.
