A sequel to last year's Captain America: First Avenger will hit theaters April 24, 2014.

The Walt Disney Studios, which will release the movie for Marvel Studios, announced the date Thursday. It puts the Captain America movie two weeks ahead of Sony's scheduled release of a sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man on May 5, 2014.

Captain America, played by Chris Evans, also will be making an appearance as part of the team of superheros who join forces in The Avengers, which Disney releases May 4.

The character will then move in to a second movie where he'll be the headliner. Captain America: The First Avenger, grossed $369 million worldwide when it was released last July.

Dammit, was on my way to create a thread about this.

But luckily I went an refreshed OT to see.

Anyway, Joe Johnston won't return which is good, I think.

Go go JP4.

Maybe Rolan Emmerich should do the sequel? ^^

you can't have all the fun! :P

Keep Joe Johnston away and you have the possibility of a decent film. First half of the original was great, and then Johnston's shitty action directing kicked in and it went to shit.

I'm in. I liked the first movie, thought it was a good start. I wonder who will direct this one now if Johnston isn't doing it?

Johnston did a perfect job of establishing the tone of Steve Rogers' character in the first half but, yeah, the action in the second half left a lot to be desired. I still liked it a lot overall and I will look forward to the sequel. There is a lot of material left for this to draw off of.

I hope the budget doesn't suffer too much. Disney/Marvel had to have been hoping for a larger international gross from the first one.

I loved the sense of old timey adventure in the first half of the film. Hope they replicate that through the whole film in the sequel.

The first one bored me. The action was bad.

Captain America just seems like one of those less-than-super marketable superheroes, especially with American hegemony not what it was 60 years ago.

Forgetting about that, I thought the first movie was mediocre. I'll have to see The Avengers before I can decide whether this is a good idea. I'm not unconditionally for it like I am for another Iron Man.

Thats the beauty of the character. Cap has the moral compass from America in the 1940's which is completely different than the current climate of patriotism. "A man out of time" who has always stuck my his morals which no longer fit in the world he lives in.

I wouldn't say that, real Cap not the bullshit Ultimates one has a timelessness to him.

Needs to have:

The Falcon
Winter Soldier
Zemo
Sharon Carter
Ed Brubaker

Go.

I loved the original.

Iron Man 1, Thor, and Captain America were all great and about on par for me.

Here's hoping they can keep it good in a modern setting.

Not really. Quit reading the books in the mid 90's. The rift in morals started really exposing themselves during Operatiom:Galactic Storm with the rift in the Avengers to kill the Kree Super Intelligence. He and Stark went head to head on the debate of killing a living being to prevent the destruction of Earth. they didnt refer to him as the "Big blue boy scout" for nothing.

Personally I think a movie of the title being stripped from him by the U.S. government would make a good movie.

Like Tony has made the wisest decisions in his life. I am talking about Cap at his base standing up and fighting for what you believe and not letting wrongs go unrighted.

And Superman is called the "Big Blue Boy Scout".

First movie was so bad it was painful. I wonder what exactly will they do for the sequel without the novelty of being set in the 1940s.

Cap has been referred to that in the Marvel books as well.

GEEK FIGHT! lol

The most interesting part of this news is that the summer movie season is now beginning in April. Thank you The Hunger Games and Fast Five.

Also loved the first so can't wait.

How do they keep missing a July 4th date!? It's too perfect. Or are they just trying to avoid whatever else might be releasing that day?

I don't get how anybody could dislike the first one. It's far and away the best Marvel superhero movie I've seen.

I feel that both Captain America and Thor had elements that might be harder to appreciate for a mass audience. Both of them had directors who definitely left their mark on the films, for the better in my opinion. Thor had a lot of Shakespeare overtones which is what Branagh is known for, and because of it Loki is probably the most interesting character in the Marvel film universe. Captain America was a tribute to all sorts of things; WWII propaganda, the Indiana Jones tradition, actual discarded Nazi weapons designs, etc. The two films also played off of each other in an incredibly interesting way.

Taken together, Captain America and Thor are to me the most interesting and layered films Marvel has ever produced.
