LOS ANGELES -- Mitsubishi, in an urgent need to revive sales and its brand image in this country, is putting its redesigned 2006 Eclipse coupe on sale 10 days earlier than planned.

The car went on sale Thursday at a base price of $19,994 including the shipping charge. The 2005 model was priced at $20,274 including shipping.

The ad campaign begins this weekend.

The company originally planned to put some of the vehicles into dealerships for display and promotional purposes on Memorial Day. The official sales date and ad launch was set for June 12.

But Mitsubishi is counting on the Eclipse to bring some spark back to the brand. Sales plunged 40.2 percent in the first four months of the year compared with 2004. Each nameplate was down by double digits, including the Eclipse coupe, down 22.0 percent.

"Feedback and reactions from dealers and consumers has been overwhelmingly positive," said Dave Schembri, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. "Since our product ramp up had been virtually flawless, we saw no reason to hold back on deliveries of this fabulous new car to showrooms."

The redesigned Eclipse comes in two models, the GS and the GT. The GS comes with a 2.4-liter, 162-hp four-cylinder engine with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. The four-cylinder engine in the current Eclipse makes 147 hp.

The GT has a 3.8-liter, 263-hp V-6 with either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. The current 3.0-liter V-6 makes 200 hp in the GT and 210 hp in the GTS.

The Rockford Fosgate audio system uses 650 watts and has nine speakers.

The primary target customers are singles and married couples aged 25 to 35. The secondary customers are baby boomers with older children and empty nesters looking for a personal car.

The car is built at the Mitsubishi plant in Normal, Ill. It has capacity for 42,000 coupes annually.

Byebye Mitsu?

They should've had a turbo 4-banger. Still a nice car - just don't know if it's a good value..

Well, like I said, I want to test drive one. I'll be happy to give my impressions, I've driven at least a hundred different cars so I know what to look for...

I'd rather have a 6 than a turbo charged 4. What would be the point? If they're the same power, you'd rather have a regular 6 than a turbo 4. You can always put a turbo on the 6 later if you want to get even more power than the 4.

The problem is Mitsubishi doesnt know how to make a car with lots of front wheel drive power that wont break traction when accelerating. The Galant GTZ, which is the closest cousin to the Eclipse' new platform is notorious for this. It handles horribly if you accelerate during any kind of gradual turn. And the GTZ only had 215 bhp.

This new eclipse features virtually the same platform as last years with 263 bhp to the front wheels. Unless theyve drastically revised the suspesion this will not be good times. On top of this the weight ditribution is horrible.

The back reminds me of a TT. They need to stop doing that retarded front on all their cars though. I don't get why they could possibly think that looks good... I mean... They do have eyes right??

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated
Blah. At least the previous Eclipse models had some distinctive characteristics. This looks like something Dodge would poop out...

I think the design is, at least, fresh.
I just hate the side-view mirrors and the fugly, cheap-ass-looking Pontiac grill.

The Eclipse has a bit of an identity crisis. Mitsu can't make it badboy like the old Eclipse, they already have the EVO for that. It's a bit too underpowered to compete with the likes of the RX-8 and Z. But it's got a sporty edge that would turn off buyers of more conservative cars like the Accord Coupe. It's too expensive to compete with the Scion tC and Tiburon.
The only thing that comes close may be the Mustang - which would totally whoop it in the power category.

Really, Mitsubishi should not be trying to carve a niche with its most important model (in history?). Then again, I've heard that the interior is very nice and the ride quality is quite good, if not lacking a bit of zip.

This is the most complete response so far. My two cents:

- The Evo is limited-production, so if you ask me, an Eclipse with a similar raw edge would not damage sales of the Evo one bit. In fact, as little as they're both selling, I'd say that it is a terrible shame that the new Eclipse is not an aggressive, lightweight screamer with a turbo four, because that would get 20-somethings out of their body-damaged, smoke-trailing 2nd-gen Eclipses and Talons.

- You're correct that this car competes with the Accord and Solara on paper, but looks too aggressive. Worse still, its low roofline is bound to make it uncomfortable for guys like me (I'm 6 feet tall). I refused to drive a 3rd-gen Eclipse when I had a chance. The roofline was so low as a result of its show-car styling, it was literally unsafe to drive. I felt the same way about my friend's 3000GT years ago, by the way, and this has also been a limiting factor for the Mazda Miata and Audi TT.

As a result, they've got a car that is both too upscale and too downmarket to appeal to very many people.

You can walk down the street to Pepboys and pick up a $3000 turbo kit easily. :lol

I'm no fan of the 4G63T, but it's a proven platform to build power.

I'm not saying it's easy, it's just enginewise, you'd rather have an engine w/o a turbo that's the same power as one that has one. I own a A4 1.8T btw and love it. I'm not saying turbos are bad at all... Just that you'd rather have a more powerful engine.

You make it sound like it is. It's not.

You can take 2 engines of equal power, one turbo and the other NA and put the same modifications and money into it and the turbo engine will make 40-55% more power.

Also the fact that engines aren't all built equal. Turbo engines are almost always high performance engines compared to generic workhorse engines.

Sucks to be an early adopter...

CONSUMER ALERT: Mitsubishi Halts Sale of Early Eclipse Models
Date Posted 05-26-2005

LOS ANGELES — Mitsubishi has halted sales of its redesigned 2006 Eclipse, a sport coupe the ailing Japanese automaker was counting on to jump-start the brand because of a problem with the vacuum brake booster, which could result in brake failure.

The company issued an "urgent notice" to dealers to stop sales and informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the problem on Tuesday, according to Automotive News.

Mitsubishi said up to 1,185 vehicles could be affected. Of those, 44 have been sold to consumers and 400 are at dealerships. The rest are in transit. Mitsubishi said the problem was so serious it will send technicians to buyers' homes to check their vehicles. It said the problem at the plant in Normal, Illinois, should be fixed by the end of the week.

They picked up the designer from Alpha Romeo iirc. Seems he is attached to that damn grill design.

They should have stayed true to the concept design.

Agreed, the photos make it look like they wussed out and keep the shape a bit closer to previous Eclipses than the concept was.

I don't get the new vertical-grille look (Audi and now Subaru)... not because I don't understand what they're getting at, but because I can't imagine how they've never heard of the Edsel. WTF indeed.
